I would like to know if there are somebody runing RedHat Linux 5.2 on an Acer
Extensa 501T. I'm having some problems to configure the Xserver (I can not go
further 640x480 - 8 bit!).
Thanks!

Okay, sure, but it still crashed like crazy before I installed starbuck (2.0.34)
so I'm thinking its something with the driver or the hardware. I emailed the oss
folks last night so lets see what they say.

Why return it? You already paid for the most expensive software driver ever
marketed by M$, it is part of the price for the OS. By returning it, you are
helping the retailer to fool the next consumer. Next time, please send it to me
and i will not sell it to anybody else. I am an electronic garbage collector.
Thank you.

Here's a programming tip I learned a long time ago that is just as
applicable here: never type any variable/file name twice. Keep a
window open with your varialble declarations and cut and paste them in.
I do the same thing for file names that are longer than about 3
characters. If I had all the time back that I spent re-typing commands
b/c I mis-spelled the stupid name and the time spent re-compiling b/c I
can't speel printf, I'd write my own damn case-insensitive OS.

Hi,

I did not find anyone selling an ActionScanner II (discontinued?). Anyhow,
I decided to get the Mac version of the ScanMaker X6. As it turns out,
Microtek's webpage even said it can be used on a PC, only I missed it
the first time I read through it. Thank you for responding.

I have been using a Toshiba PDR-M1. If you are looking to spend
about $400-high $300's for a camera, it's a pretty good deal.
It works with the linux program Fujiplay (download via serial
cable and shutter trigger, etc), which I have been using. I
didn't find linux drivers for the smartmedia floppy adapter.
So, you either have to boot into windows (*yuck*) and unload
images using the smartmedia floppy adapter or spend some
extra time (about 3 min/meg) and download your images into
linux via the serial port. I just use the serial port.

The image quality hasn't been rated the best, but I think
it's actually pretty good. The camera takes decent close-ups
and has an image size of 1024x1280 (pretty big for such a low
cost camera). Just search the web for Toshiba PDR-M1 for
sample images. You'll see that they are pretty good.
The camera is not for professionals--there is no mount for
extra lenses, etc. I think there is a Toshiba PDR-M2 out
or about to be released. This camera seems to have
addressed the lens mount issue and has a larger lens.
Overall, I think the image quality from the Nikon Coolpix
900 is better, but that camera costs twice as much. I
had a chance to compare them side-to-side one afternoon.

Hope this helps!

I've bought modems at auction before (and sometimes gotten burned), and it
seems to me that one sure way to tell if it will work with Linux is to look
at the operating system requirements. If it says it will work with DOS, it
will work with Linux, and is not a Winmodem. On a typical day, you might
find ten or fifteen modems on SurplusAuction, and probably 2 or 3 of them
will be OK.

Good luck

You need to compile your network card driver as a module and install
isapnp for this card. That should work.

But do you actually ever retype that mess from memory? If you

make any difference that the filesystem is case sensitive since
the items in the list will always be correct.

There have been several firmware releases from Ricoh after this one.
The current version is 2.40. Upgrading might help if you can get it
done (you need MS-DOS or W95 and one of the few scsi cards supported
by the firmware upgrader).

On the other hand, I've also seen some strange write errors roughly
about 10-15% of the time when starting a new track even with firmware
2.20. I just upgraded to 2.40 but have not yet tested extensively to
see if it works better. I am running Linux 2.2.5 and the host adapter
is an AHA-1542A.

Yes, you do. Try the tulip driver.
