I gave the above a try, except with my CD-RW which is "hdc" and still no
go. I didn't link "/dev/cdrom" to anything, because I was waiting to see
what "sdx" it would come up as. As
I'm running the CD as master and the Zip as slave on the secondary, I assume,
the CD should have come up as "sda" and the Zip as "sdb". But, again, only
the Zip came up and as "sda".
Thanks for your reply, and I'm still at it.

Subject: Broken hard disk ??? -- endless problems with HP Omnibook 4100
Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 23:20:43 +1200
Hi,
when I run hdparm -I /dev/hda I get the following:
/dev/hda
hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hda: drive_cmd: status=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
Model=... etc. (/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit contains: hdparm -c1 -d1 -m16 -A1
/dev/hda)
Is this normal??? i.e. code 0x.51 and 0x04, could this be anything other
than a failure?
Reason for asking is: this drive (along with the last 5 drives) does a
strange seek every once in a while, this sounds to me like a head crash.
This is the only machine that I know of that does this, I am sure that
other machines do the strange seek but not with this sound. HP refuses
to replace the drive as there are no bad sectores and the test programs
they use do not detect a fault. However I am sure that this drive will
fail soon (define soon :) )
Every drive so far has died with bad sectors and every one of them has
done the strange seek thing. All drives have been IBM Travelstar 4.x GB
(3.9-4.1GB data) HP calls them HP F1467A
Any help /thoughts appreciated.
Helgi..

I could upgrade, cheaply, to a (used) monitor that has a larger
screen than my current one. Unfortunately, the video cable is
really three cables, R, G, and B. Is there any way of connecting
it to my 'normal' PC video card with the single D connector?
Thank you,

How much is your data worth?
I use bru mostly because est has excellent support, and a lot bells and
whistles that don't come with tar.
A couple of hundred bucks is chump change compared to trying to restore
your data by hand off a tarred tape.

If you are able to mount in text-mode, then you are also able to mount it
under X.
It may be possible that the _program_ that you use under X does not execute
a correct 'mount', but that is something else...
Just forget about the icons and other 'handy dandy' tools, enter the command
for mount in an X terminal window... much easier then setting up yet another
tool...

I bought a SMC EZ Hub 10/100 5604DS, 4 ports, one of which has an extra
uplink connector. Cost just under $50. Works great. More recently, I bought
a SOHOware 10/100 5 port switch at CompUSA for $100 with a $20 rebate, which
I just got in the mail. With the full duplex network I noticed a significant
speed increase using Samba. Hubs are fine but if you can find a switch
for <$100 I would highly recommend getting one.

I was going to start a new topic, but this is quite close to what I have.
I've been seeing a few problems burning audio CDs on a setup that has always
worked very well before. I have a Plextor Ultraplex 40x, and a Ricoh 6200S,
plus IDE hard drives. My data partitions are FAT32, so as to be visible to
Windows too. Both are "real" SCSI drives.
If I record "on the fly" with cdda2wav piped to cdrdao it works fine. If I
extract to hard disk I get a failure (log below).
The system worked fine in 2.0 series kernels, but failed following update to
RedHat 6.1 (kernel 2.2.12). I've updated to 2.2.15 and cdrecord 1.8.1, but
the problem remains. It seems always to happen after 4 to 6 tracks. Perversely
I had a success the one time I tried a CDRW in place of the CDR.
Can all the magic numbers in the SCSI error be decoded?
