I think it might help if you go into your SCSI card's BIOS and turn off the
parity. Parity should only be turned on if you have a SCSI devise that
supports it.

cheap 486 machines with t/10 isa lan cards would run about $50. An 8
port hub is about 50$. The real expense is the monitors, and ram.
if you buy some used ibm terms that some bank used to use, you might
get them for $25-35. (ibm 3515?)
You would still need the hub, and the ram is all in your server
unit(s).
I would go with the 486 terminals for your first attempt at a home
network. Make sure they all have an acceptable amount of ram for your
processes.

Hi all
Firstly I want to thank all of you in the linux community for
making the best OS around and all those that support it by
writing some damn good software
Ok I have been using linux for about 6 months now and it is
great
still a few bugs to work out but that is nothing
My questions is Is the Realmagic lite card supoorted under
linux for the playback of CD-i movies
and video CD's
if so how do I get it working
also I know that tons of people have asked this question but I
would like to know
has anything been done with winmodems yet if not I would like
to take a crack at it
and if there is a group working on it would I be able to
join and assist in the development of drivers
for these little boards from hell(winmodems SUCK)
Thanx in advance

Date: 17 Apr 1999 07:28:13 GMT
I've a 560 MB IDE hard disk (Samsung SHD-30560A) which can be jumpered to
two different setups:
"LBA, ATA-2": 560 MB, 1086 cyl, 16 heads, 63 sectors
or
"DOS": 528 MB, 1024 cyl, 16 heads, 63 sectors
I'd like to use it as a boot disk in a 386. Booting is done with lilo. It
works fine when I format the disk in the second mode, but it fails (lilo
hangs after printing LI) in the first one. Can Linux on a 386 handle the
first mode? Can I somehow (explicitely specifying drive geometry? making
suitable partitions?) make lilo boot with the first mode as well?

I have a visual workstation 320 right now on loan from SGI. I'm wanting to
try to output video from something like windows media player or quicktime
from the composite out (or even S-Video out) to a television set. What are
the necessary steps for doing this? I can get the color bars to appear on
the television by selecting the option in the sgi video control panel, so I
know at least some kind of signal is going through. The audio works as well.
What does it take to redirect the video from an .mpg or other movie variant
out of that port?
I know this is an amature question, but the video stuff is new to me.
Thanks in advance.

I didn't know REdHat was already up to 5.9!!!! And kernel 2.2.3!!
Take a look at the article I posted a couple of days ago (search
messages in this group for 'sender contains rhodes'). I've had a similar
problem, in that sound worked with redhat 5.1, but gave me 'problem
opening /dev/audio' under 5.2

Hallo Linux users,
Please who can help me with the following problem:
I have my parallel port configured default at 0x278H and IRQ 7. Although I
believe so, according to dmesg command. The character device is /dev/lp1
A printer (HP 720 C) is connected at this port and functions pretty good
when I print using Windows.
However, when I perform a e.g. cat /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/lp1 nothing
comes out, not a single character (it's like /dev/null). I am logged in as
root at linux 5.2
Who has tips? Somebody knows what I must do to be able to print this way?
This should work at least before I begin configuring a nice printer spooler.
I spent many hours already and gave it up nearly. Thank you very much
beforehand,
Regards,
Rob Visser.

You should have the printer on as you turn on the computer.
Does cpanel's printersetup report any contact with the lp1 ?
Try the program pnp_parport
Does it report anything ?
I had the same problem, but after this procedure lp1 is talking to the printer

check your installed packages)
You may be advised to hit the Redhat ftp site and get the latest
Xservers and version of X, although I am not sure whether this is
strictly necessary for this particular card. (I got the impression that
it was supported under the RH5.2 standard distribution, however I
installed the updates anyway)
All the bpp modes are supported, however I am experiencing poor image
quality and 'wavering' on the display even after trying the suggestion
in the above mentioned document.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Correct me if I'm wrong (please do because I've had no joy with the 32
bpp mode at 1280x1024, which unfortunately is what I wanted to run for
the graphics work we do) the V550 card is in the list of cards supported
in XF86Steup program using the SVGA Xserver (you might need the latest
5.2 update from RH?). You can select 16 bpp with no problem, this all
works fine, however you can't select 24 or 32 bpp modes with this
graphics card/Xserver as it appears that it is not supported.

As previously stated the append='mem=128M' added to your lilo.conf file
is a simple way to achieve this. Check your /proc directory to ensure
that the change has worked. 'ls -l' of this directory will show you an
entry for kcore (at least I think that is the name you're looking for,
I'm doing this from memory) which should show a size value in bytes the
same as your available memory (around 133,***,*** for 128MB RAM)

Subject: RedHat with two NICs
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 09:57:21 -0400
I've been trying to get RedHat to recognize two ethernet cards, but have
been having trouble. There are no resource conflicts, and both cards
test OK using the manufacturer's setup programs. The Intel Pro100 was
recognized fine during the install, but when I tried to add a Linksys
PCI card using various X utilities (Linuxconf, Kernel configurator,
Network Configuration), I was informed that the NE2 PCI module was not
found. I checked the directory, and it was indeed there.
Any suggestions?
