I have an internal 56k zoom modem, that I disabled PnP and set to jumper ,
installed on com 3. When I activate my ppp I get a short blast of dialtone
and no dial. The modem then disconnects, waits about 10 seconds and goes
through the whole process again. I have tried the command echo ATDT
phonenumber >/dev/cua2. I get the same symptom as above.

Any suggestions

Subject: SCSI Zip + Zoom
Date: 17 Apr 1999 14:09:34 GMT

I'm trying to install a 250 MB Zip w/ their Zip Zoom accelerator card
on an all SCSI system. The first adapter is a AHA2940 with 2 hd's and
a cdrom hanging off it (id's 0, 1, and 5). I've got the zoom card installed
and the drive set to id 6. The whole setup works fine under NT, and
I confirmed the I/O address (0x140) and the IRQ (11) of the card there.

My latest attempt has the card setup defined in
/usr/src/linux-2.2.5/drivers/scsi/Makefile:

CFLAGS_aha152x.o =   -DDEBUG_AHA152X -DSKIP_BIOSTEST -DSETUP0="{0x140,11,7,1}"

and aha152x as well as aic7xxx support compiled into ther kernel. The boot
messages reveal only this:

aha152x0: vital data: PORTBASE=0x140, IRQ=11, SCSI ID=7, reconnect=enabled,
parity=disabled, synchronous=disabled, delay=0, extended translation=disabled
aha152x: trying software interrupt, lost.
aha152x: IRQ 11 possibly wrong. Please verify.

Without the compiler flags above, this message was just repeated for IRQ 10
as well. Obviously it never sees the drive at all. I know the hardware is
fine (it works under NT).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

If not what would be a cheap way of making a SMP machine?

Its not a virus. My guess is that either you somehow managed to corrupt
the filesystem OR used rpms from questionable sources (trojan). There
really aren't any viruses per say on unices.

I have Linux installed on an AMD K6-2 333Mhz.

Linux Went up Immediately without a hitch. Unfortunately, X-Windows
hasn't worked yet, I haven't found proper support for the integrated
video and sound chip sets.

The system runs like lightning.

Thats right, a drive has to be "multi-read" capable to read CDRWs.
Does anybody know what "multi-read" actually is?

And i would suggest to use the solution with the MSI-6905
Adaptor (Socker 370 -> Slot 1), because drilling the
hole is rather dangerous!

I have two of the MSI-6905 (Ver. 1.0) runing with PPGA-Celeron300A @ 450MHz
without any problems on a GA-686BXD.

The next revision of the MSI-Adapter will have a jumper for
dual-celeron-operation, so you even do not need to solder a wire.

According to bxboards.com, it will be best to buy Celeron300A:

CPU OC success rate:
300A 450 80%
300A 504 3% (112MHz FSB)
333 500 20%

so, the liklyhood for two 300A->450 is 64% - that not bad.

After you made the new module. Did you do depmod -a {kernel version} ?

For example: depmod -a 2.2.5

Subject: Corrupt libraries and kernel panic....virus?
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 07:15:22 -0700

I am running Redhat 5.2 with a 2.2.4 kernel/ KDE 1.1 on an IBM ThinkPad.
I was installing an rpm (efax) when I got the following error message:
"corrupt shared libraries"

Everything I tried to run gave the same error message.

Even the "reboot" command at the root prompt yielded only a "corrupt shared
libraries" message. When I finally cold-booted, the process only went as
far as the
attempt to mount the drives, and I get a "kernel panic - no init". When I
try to boot using my boot disk and rescue disk, I am stopped at the same
point in the process, only the message is slightly more verbose, with
something like "kernel panic - no init....trying to pass init to kernel"
.......
and then full stop. I can't even access my Linux partitions to attempt
to save some stuff before re-installation.

I'm just not experienced enough with Linux to guess what the next
intelligent move might be. If I was back in the world of dos, I would
strongly suspect a virus of some kind. Luckily the Win98 partition on the
box is still functioning, and I am able to send out this SOS in a bottle.
ANY ideas would be most gratefully received. I just hate the idea of
dumping about four months of work on my Linux setup.

Thanks!

Hello,

My name is jonathan, I am a support tech for smc. the 8432 is a pci card and
is controlled by the bios. I have a few questions and I can help with the
configuration of the card.

1. At this time there are no drivers for the 8432 in linux. have you went to
the nasa.gov ftp site for drivers. The card is controlled by the bios, Turn of
the plug and play features of the bios.
2. I do know that the 9000 and ultra and ultra32 smc card do have drivers for
linux. however they are not supported. ( This will change as smc is creating
drivers and support for redhat. At this time I am the only tech that uses
redhat 5.2.
3. error that you are getting is one that is caused by improperly shutting down
the system. I will hang there for a while but eventually will correct itself
and will continue to boot. This I know from experience. Once it has booted and
corrected itself, you will not get this error again.
4. If possible at this time, I would use another nic, soho, 3com, dlink and a
few others work well. Although the 3com is a better choice at this time.
However if you have the drivers for the 8432 from nasa, the smc card is the
better of the two.

Both Kernel version 2.0.35 and sndconfig came along with Red Hat 5.1. I
am pretty sure though that AWE 64 cards will work with this kernel version
(I have heard of others getting theirs to work), but it may only use the
card under SB 16 mode.
When running sndconfig, the program first asks which type of sound card
you are using. AWE 64 is under the list (I have tried both AWE 64 and SB
16, but neither work). The program then asks for the settings used by the
sound card (base address, IRQ, DMA, etc). The program continues by stating
that it has updated the files /etc/conf.modules and /etc/isapnp.conf. The
program then attempts to test the sound card. At this point, the modprobe
error comes up.
Just to let you know, I know a fair bit about computers, but I am new to
Linux. I have several ideas for possible solutions, but I dont know how to
implement them:
    1. As you noted above, the required modules, could simply be mising. I
searched all over the place, on
both the hard drive where I have Linux installed and on the CD
containing the distribution, and I can not seem to find the modules. Is
it possible to get these modules off the Internet? If so, do you know
where on the hard drive I would install them?
    2. I have considered upgrading the kernel to the next stable version
(2.2.6), but I dont know how to do
this. I didnt want to try because I dont want to end up making a
mistake and having to totally reinstall everything (I dont really
have a way to back up my existing data).

Do you have any ideas of what I can do?

Thanks

Question:

A friend of mine and I tried to install Red Hat 5.1 last night, but we
could not get past the "druid" phase (or "fdisk") because of what we
think is the SCSI card. Upon checking RH's website, they have the 3940

use an old 2940 with a W(50-pin) SCSI hard drive and physically
disconnect my UW(72-pin?) hard drive so Linux wouldn't see it for it to
work. The interesting thing is, I have a W(50-pin) Plextor cdrom drive
