We just had a power outage and since our backup power system has not
arrived yet, the system went down. It appears that some files have
been corrupted. How can I do some damage control now? The system
seems to be running fine, but certain files look weird. Any pointers
would be greatly appreciated.

I got a really snotty reply when I asked if they supported
InputSprockets. Basically, it was a "We don't and don't plan too.
That's just for games. Go away little boy." reply.

Subject: Diva ISDN Card
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 17:45:23 -0000
Hi,
I've got a Diva ISDN PCI card - it works fine under Linux, but I'm trying to
use it from within a VMware virtual PC - and that doesn't work.
I've configured the virtual machine with a serial port of /dev/ttyI0 (the
working port under Linux), under virtual copies of Windows 98 and Windows
2000 Professional. I can query the ISDN card, and I get back all the
parameters from the card, but when I dial it fails to detect a carrier. I've
tried passing AT&E1 to the modem (this was the trick to get the card working
under Linux), but I haven't had any luck.
Has anybody got any good ideas?
Cheers
Ian

My specs:
Red Hat 7.0
My own compile of kernel 2.2.18
Dual Pentium Pro/200MHz
AIC-7880U on PCI
CDRM00203 - IBM SCSI CDROM
When ripping audio tracks from CD using either cdparanoia or cdda2wav
the BEST performance I get is about 0.4X. It takes about 3 hours to rip
a full length CD. It seems to me that I should be getting at least
twice this performance. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing
it to work so slow? Is this CD-ROM drive actually that slow? Surely,
it can read at least at 1X.

Get the latest 2.4.0-test12 kernel, which doesn't require patching. Enable
hpt366 support and "boot offboard chipsets first", compile the kernel,
update your bootloader, and move the disk to the first channel on the
HPT366 card. (Oh, and say yes to all DMA related config questions (that are
not experimental)).
Reboot... :)

Hi, All
i put ATAPI CDRW in my box and all things
are ok for now except one:
I cannot set DMA and other parameters for CDRW.
i have toshiba CDROM as hdc and CDRW as hdd
hdparm is used to set DMA for hdc but
i cannot do that with hdd, because
i set "ignore=hdd" for ide-cd module.
So if i try to use hdparm on hdd, it
reports "device is not configured" and exits.
Are there other utilities/method for
low level CDRW (i.e. ide-scsi and such) device configuration ?
any ideas/info are greatly appreciated

Surely you jest. If you take the time and follow Nvidia's directions,
which are clearly posted, it just works. It's so easy it only takes
*maybe* 2 minutes to set it up.

Those drivers work fine with TNT, TNT2, GeForce and GeForce2 boards, it

Subject: vxa-1, rh7 freeze up
Hi,
Help!
I have a Red Hat, Samba server that freezes
when running a dump (0.4b19 & 0.4b20). This happens
approximately three dumps out of four. (When I say
freeze, I really mean freeze: no keyboard, no telnet,
no ping, screen saver frozen in place ...)
My dump commands:
/sbin/dump -0a -b 64 -f /dev/nst0 /
/sbin/dump -0a -b 64 -f /dev/nst0 /export
note: / = /dev/sda2 & /export = /dev/sda4
It will usually crash on the second partition (it's the
larger of the two), but will occasionally crash on the first
as well. Sometimes, it even works, but not very often.
I am suspicious that the problem is my VXA-1
tape drive, but can't prove it. This is my configuration:
OS: red hat 7.0 smp kernel
motherboard: msi ms-6114
processors: dual Intel PII-233
memory: 64 Meg, pc-66 ECC SDRAM
hard drive controller: AMI Mega Express 500
hard drive: raid1 dual seagate 6 GB scsi-2
tape controller: adaptec aha-1522 (active terminator at end
of cable)
tape drive: ecrix vxa-1
The problems seemed to have started after replacing
a Sony sdt-7000 dds2 tape drive.
Does anyone have any experience or opinions on this
that might help. My customer is about ready to kill me!
Many thanks,

This is typical on bad lines when the two modems can't sync.
It happens with me a lot after rain.

Do a postmortem with ATI6 and ATI11 -- that should tell you
what happened and probably why.

Make sure there's no setting that would hang up a modem after 5 minutes
if no key is pressed.

Hi,
I'm a newbie and I'm trying to install Linux on an old ThinkPad 700C.
I get an 'NMI generated from unknown source' while booting
wiht the rescue diskette.
There is also a 'Whaa. Error occurred' up above this last error.
A little perusal of the source indicates that the first error is in
a file 'ps2esdi.c' which is, I think, code related to the hard drive
on this machine.
In any case, it ain't working. Anybody got any ideas?

Hi all,
I need to use a Magellan Spacemouse with my App (based on OpenInventor).
After long search, I found the best convenient way to use it is to use a
X Extension Input device driver. But I don't know how to find (or
develop) one on linux. (I've got samples on SGI and AIX, but it's not
straightforward to port).
Do you know how-to :
1. find one X driver for this spaceball
2. find ressources on how-to develop X-device drivers.
Thanks in advance...

I am running SuSE 6.4 for Alpha on a Multia (21066) and an AlphaStation 200
(21064). So I guess the website/manual is wrong. I think I saw that
mentioned on the box but luckily it is incorrect. :-)

This built me a tight ipchain/iptable firewall rule set
http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/firewall/index.html
I used DENY, hardcoded external addresses, logged everything.
As part of the instruction and if you read the script, it will
give several suggestions as to where you install the firewall
and turn on IP Masquerading if you need it.

I'm gonna read more on FW:s now and regarding the HTP366;
I made the decision to move everything to ATA/33.
Primarily after reading the abit newsgroup. When I first moved the hdd:s to
ATA/66 I experienced several times that everything hanged and apparently
I'm not alone(win98). There's some serious flaws in High Point's bios and
drivers. Did not help to flash the mobo with the latest.... ++got some
linux updated though
Hope Oracle is as easy to setup as on Solaris..... That will be very
interesting to see.

Subject: Re: linux + adaptec 29160
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 20:53:05 GMT
Hello,
I have encoountered the very same subject in the past few days. I bought
the 29160 Adaptec card to drive my tape drive...a Seagate "Scorpion 40".
Anyway, I decided to install it on an older machine, in case problems
arose; my main machine serves several users and has an internet
presence, etc., and it can not afford much in the way of hardware
experimentation.
I haven't installed or custom-compiled a kernel for it. It was supposed
to work ""out-of the box." That particular machine is now using Linux
RedHat 6.2, kernel 2.2.14-5.0. (It's a PII / 350MHz box). When I try to
install the aic7xxx module, the adapter tries to initiate, but the
module issues tons of error messages that appear on all virtual
consoles, and won't stop until the achine is powered off. "Kill -9",
even on the ppid, didn't do it.
I understand the module needs some parameters, and I am trying to
determine what those are. So far, nothing I've found
documentatiobn-wise, has been very helpful. Of course, this is RedHat, I
haven't used any other distributions for years.
Anyway, I am working on trying to get the borad to initialize under
linux, so I will be following this thread closely.
Backups have become a somewhat urgent issue: one of my PC's was
clobbered totally by Norton Disk Doctor..that machine is a Win98 machine
part of the time. The user did not realize that Norton would consider
non-Windows partitions to be errors, so when he optimized the disk,
instead of "fixing" just the logical C: drive, the entire system got
irretrivably destroyed, software-ly speaking. The entire system must be
rebuilt. If only the apadter and tape drive had arrived a week earler...
I am looking for the parameters for aic7xxx.o, specifically for the
Adaptec 29160. If anyone knows them, please clue me in!
