I can't use the onboard parallel port of almost every
compaq proliant 1600 I have configured

The lpt is on irq 7 at 0x03bc (bios settings) but linux refuses to see
the port.
Any thoughts?

All -

I recently started teaching myself Linux. The tutorial I got came with
Caldera OpenLinux 1.3. The installation went well, but I chose the wrong
X11 server during installation.

Can someone tell me how to install a different X11 after installation? I
found a couple of utilities like LISA, but they only seem to display
information & don't allow you to alter the system setup (at least, not how
I want to change it).

If anyone has URLs for good beginners web sites, I'd appreciate knowing
about them as well.

Please copy replies to the address below (it's been spam-proofed). Many
thanks in advance.

And it will only work there. It's a GDI printer. There's a project that
_partialy_ enables Linux to use HP's GDI printers but I can't remember its

i might be jumping into the middle of the conversation, but I sell USR
robotics modems are $84 that are jumperable for com1 and com2. I also sell
an external modem and a cheaper internal modem.

I am sure if you went to pricewatch ot pricescan, you can find it cheaper.

Subject: Plextor 32X SCSI CD
Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 22:03:55 GMT

I'm having problems with time-out errors using Plextor's 32X CDROM drive. The drive
mounts OK, and sometimes it will work for a little while, but then nothing. It is
connected to a Fireport 40 card using the ncr53C8XX driver. I have a Zip drive also
on
the same card which works fine.

I am running RedHat 5.2, dual booting with win98. The CDROM works perfectly in
windows or DOS. I had this problem with Linux from day one, had to copy the Redhat CD
to a hard drive partition to install. I've since upgraded the kernel to 2.2.3 but the
problem with the CD persists. Otherwise, all is currently rosy in Linux-land.

Anyone have any advice to offer?

The PCI soundblasters don't work with the standard Linux kernel sound
drivers. You can buy a driver suite for $30 that does, though. I'd
recommend a good ol SB AWE64. I know *that* works :)

Am I sharing the DSL lines with another phone customer?
Do I need a splitter if I don't use the lines for anything else?
In some case, the splitter is limiting the bandwidth down to 128K.

It's OK to have both lines hooked-up to the phone company central office.

Perhap the phone company should not be allowed to be an ISP or own one.
Anyway, i don't really want these lines to link into the internet

Hello,

I have a problem; I want to install rh5.2 on my laptop (486DX2) and the only
way i can do that is to use a parallell port cdrom device (DiscTec

I have tried redhat's boot.img and also downloaded a image named rh52pp2.img
but not of those seems to have support for my cdrom.

Anyone got any Idea's ?

While can't/won't is a little extreme for some, it is
applicable for others. Maybe even most, if most are new to
computers.

You are right. The variance in configuring GNU/Linux
applications is a major roadblock to wide acceptance.

The endless back and forth with at least some of those replying
to you is pointless, as they are unwilling to admit any
weakness of GNU/Linux, even when they are plainly mistaken.

You didn't say what your graphics chip set is, but I'll try and guess
anyway. Try adding "sw_cursor" to your /etc/X11/XF86Config file in the

Hey, I didn't know this idiom. How cool. :))) And I know no FORTRAN by
I've read that you can reuse keywords like identifiers and do very odd
things, is that right? e.g. "if if then then = else else then = if"...

Serious now, although some people want lengthy names everywhere e.g.
recordIndex instead of i, I'm completely in favor of some ewxceptions when
mathematical notation justifies it. Names like i/j/k for iteration over
arrays up to three dimension are okay. But, do they do it for other
iterations? because FORTRAN types do tons of matrices.

Do you have the IDE tape device support available (either as

are you using? My Colorado 5GB IDE drive was recognized by
kernel 2.0.34 but wouldn't work properly until I went to
