I am running Slackware 3.6 with kernel 2.0.35. i am trying to get my
box to ip masquerade but i can't get both cards detected. I can detect
both cards individually though. they are on different io's (220 and
280) and different irq's (3 and 11) i have tried the append eth0,0,0,0
eth1,0,0,0 (sorry if that looks wrong but i can't remember he correct
way, though i know i did it right when i tried. ) and adding alias eth0
ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x280,0x220
to conf.modules... the cards are kingston isa cards and running in a
486 w/ 16 meg ram. if anyone can help i would gladly appreciate it.
thanks in advance

Because it's way harder.

Sure, just run fdisk and allocate one big nasty partition, then format it
with mkfs. Make sure you point to the right drive - type slowly!

>I need to preserve all the original data and partitions.

This is not a problem. After it's formatted, add a line for it to
/etc/fstab and you're good to go. You don't even have to reboot.

What's sndconfig? I haven't gotten my AWE64 working yet, either.

Yes, thanks to PCI magic most, if not all multiport PCI ethernet
adapters should work. Some time ago I got to use a Digital (21xxx) based
quad-port ethernet card, I forget which brand it was.

I am looking for a desktop replacement in the form of a laptop or
portable PC. I am currently considering either a
Gateway 2000 Solo 9100LS or a Dell Inspiron 7000 though
I am open to other suggestions.

Since I use the Solaris operating system heavily at work, I
would like to ideally be able to smoothly run this os on the
laptop. Baring that I would be happy with Linux.

I am interested in hearing experiences and opinions on either of the
above machines as well as the compatibility of Solaris and Linux with
these machines.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I also have a regular Microsoft mouse and it just stays in the far right
corner in the X Windows environment. This is an extremely annoying problem,
let alone I can't too much use X Windows. However, my mouse works fine in
the regular terminal environment. Please help!

Subject: Error during boot = ide0 : buggy cmd640b interface on PCI ....
Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 03:33:01 GMT

Hi,

When my Linux system boots up, it displays this message:
    kernel: ide0 : buggy cmd640b interface on PCI (type1), config=0x3a
ide1 : serialized, secondary interface okay

What does this mean? I am running Linux 2.0.36 on a Compaq ProLinea with two
hard disks (one on primary ide interface as master, the second on secondary
ide interface as master) on the ide interfaces off the motherboard. Later
during the boot, the hard disks are detected okay. My system is not very
stable, as it stops functioning on the network after some period of time. I
have the same Linux configuration working perfectly on another machine (also
a Compaq) on the same network without any problems.

Thanks for help.

I am considering picking up a Iomega Zip 250 drive for my Linux box (Red Hat
5.1, kernel 2.0.35). I would like to get the parallel port type. Is any
one currently using such I drive with Linux? I would like to know before I
go out to buy one whether or not the are very difficult to set up under
Linux, and whether or not I can still use my printer off the same parallel
port. I am relatively new to Linux and I don't know much about
reconfiguring the kernel and the like. If anyone has any suggestions, could
you let me know. Thanks.

Subject: Linux MP3 Server
Date: 20 Apr 1999 17:31:56 -0700

Hello!

I'm starting to work on small MP3 server for my home stereo system, and I
was wondering if I could get some hardware recommendations from you kind
folks. :)

The Case: I want it to be as small as possible, but fit the standard width
as generic stereo equipment, which I think is the same as rack sized cases.

The Power Supply: Quiet quiet quiet! I'm leaning towards one of the
Silencers from PC Power and Cooling, but I haven't used one, so it would be
nice to hear from someone who has.

The Sound Card: My experience with Linux and sound cards is minimal. As
far as I'm concerned, it just has to sound good. It'd be convenient if it
had stereo RCA outputs, but a 1/8" mini will do just fine, I suppose. It
has to sound better than a typical Sound Blaster. ;)

.. when I finish it, I'll definitely put up specs, pictures, and whatever
software I write to make it pleasant to use.

Thanks for any help! :)

It is the bottleneck. The 1542 Adaptec cards use ISA busmastering and
this transfer mode is limited to appr. 1MB/s max on modern Intel chipsets.

Get a PCI SCSI adapter, it doesn't have to be Adaptec, any low
cost NarrowSCSi should work fine (although UW adapter are cheap
these days). I would recommend a Symbios SYM8751SP for 65$ from

Well, solaris is a proprietary system, so I think you can only run it on sun
machines. but I know linux is definitely compatible with either. Both are
nice laptops.
