First make sure you have a mount point. If you havea redhat system they've
made you a /mnt/cdrom directory, which you'll notice is empty (since you
haven't mounted anything yet).

Stick a cdrom in the drive and type:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

which mounts the cdrom device to the mount point (in this case /mnt/cdrom). If
you chdir to /mnt/cdrom you'll see the contents of your disc.

That's how the hell you do it. <g>

But, it's not, in general, hardware-accelerated (only for special
cards).

See this faq for more info:

And whether the server has hardware accelerated OpenGL depends
of the server and the effect also depends on the client library.

I remember back in the early days of OS/2 there was some mention about where
to partition HPFS drives and the fact that "dos based" OS's could get
confused and literally "stop looking" as soon as they found a non-native
partition -- i.e., any FAT partitions BEHIND the HPFS partition would only
be accessible under OS/2 [or, in theory, NT 3.1/3.5 since that version of NT
supports HPFS]

Why would having the ability to use longer names have any affect
on programs (or people) that use short ones? Nothing forces
you to use long names and you can always rename to a short name
if necessary for backwards compatibility. Unless, of course
you want to force people to upgrade and deliver the base OS
with files using the new conventions right away...

>Or are you proposing that people ditch all their software and start from

No, but they should be aware of the issue instead of having
mysterious things happen when they write a long name and need
to access it from an app that can only use short names. What
we really need are working symlinks to give the same file more than
one name at a time.

Subject: Help configuring RedHat 5.2 on adaptech 2940U2W

I have successfully installed Red Hat on a Pentium II system with an
Adaptech 2940U2W controller. During the boot up it successfully detects
and uses the SCSI controller (the IDE interface is disabled). When I go
to configure the system and rebuild the kernel and modules I am unable
to get a good working boot from LILO (luckily I only added the new boot
to the LILO list and saved several boot disks).
  I get the following symptoms:
successful boot from a floppy, but copying to the boot location
and running LILO, it insists on reloading the aic7xxx module, which then
re-downloads the sequencer code (wiping out all the active I/O) and then
gives a kernel panic or:
no SCSI controllers found from the boot floppy.

I have tried several configurations when I do a "make menuconfig" - I
have tried using only the Adaptech aic7xxx both in a module and in a
kernel. I have tried using all the Adaptech's in modules.

I obviously doing something (probably very basic) wrong - I have no
parameters passed to the Adaptech module or kernel. I have no LILO
parameters. The crazy part is that its okay from a floppy and its okay
in the as installed RedHat 5.2. Any suggestions?

Please reply by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It means that your Compaq has a built-in IDE controller that is based
upon the buggy CMD640b chipset. The Linux kernel you're using has been
compiled with the appropriate configuration option already.

This is probably unrelated to the CMD640b chipset message.

IRQ3 is used for Com2. You should change the network
card to a different IRQ, maybe 5, 10 or 9.

You also are only showing one Network card, but
said that you have 2. Are you taslking about the cable modem?

Finally, I found that my NE-2000 clone only shows up on
certain addresses
(listed in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/ne.c on MY system.)

Make sure you are using a good address.

I have an ESS1689 in my laptop, a ProStar 1200.

I'm using Red Hat 5.2 and the 2.2.5 kernel. I got the sound working
as follows:

Recompiled the kernel, with every sound driver that sounded as if
it might be helpful compiled as a module.

Ran Red Hat's sndconfig program. Picked ESS1868 (close enough)
and gave it the correct IRQ, IO, and DMA settings.

sndconfig created an /etc/conf.modules file like this:
alias sound sb
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x300

Sound works, but midi does not.

Ok, sounds like you want to setup some kind of reasonbly fast
connection between routers that are "close". Some DSL systems
( VDSL / HDSL ) work over distance less than 2000 ft, and can
give rates in the 3-7 Mb/s. It works over standard
twisted pair, and can be shared with POTS, if
a splitter is used. I don't know vendors of these
types of things, but their customer focus would be
campus networks.

It still seems that you have some idea of building
your own DSL modem. These are quite complex devices - the
"complexity" you mention above of dealing with the ISP
protocol is really a minor side note.

Just trying to clear up some confusion on what dsl is...

Regards,

Mark
