I used a generic one briefly and it was fairly quick. The image
jumped all over the place, though, so I bagged it.

Good idea. Clones work well, are a better value, and encourage Intel
to lower prices some more. Although, if you're going to crunch a whole
lot of numbers with that FORTRAN, throw out the value argument, since
Intel does FP faster per clock cycle. Then the value is about equal.
There's a ton of web sites to check this out.

Good. But I think there are ATAPI TR-4's that should work well (since
ATAPI disks do), but I've not seen comments about it either way.

SCSI disk people seem (just my impression) to have more problems getting
Linux to install, but it's usually just a matter of time, so shouldn't
be very important in your case.
Top-end SCSI stuff would be faster than top-end other stuff, but few
think it's significant, unless you've got lots of things using multiple
disks like on a network server. There's probably better things to
spend the money on.

I've just done this for an LS20 (coolscanII)
I found that I got file not found errors during the compile.
Copying the files to the source directory worked for me.....
The files were the JPEG files from X

Hi. I followed your advice and it all worked out smoothly. In fact,
since I only recently reinstalled RH Linux 5.1, I felt I no longer
needed it but that I should upgrade to 5.2 so I downloaded the supp
and boot image disks from one of the RH Linux FTP mirrors. Then I
booted my computer via the floppy and did a direct installation via
FTP and still made it to New year's Parade.. Thank you for your help
and cooperation. Happy new year to you and to all. Sorry if Iam
publicly posting this though a lot of us out there can learn from all
this.
P.S.: Once I had the card working in Linux, I turned the Plug-N-Play
support back on so that Win98 would work properly. I did not even have
to turn it back off when booting into Linux the next time. It all
worked smoothly.

Subject: Making SURE Linux doesn't WAKE UP (power-up)?
Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 20:56:15 GMT
Linux will sometimes power-up, and access the hard drive, for
no apparent reason.
I need to make sure when Linux powers down (CPU, HDD, etc.) it
stays down! So I guess my question is two fold:
1-How do I find out if my computer wakes up anytime
during the night? Will any logs be able to tell me this?
2-What do I do to make sure it stays powered down?
The reason I need this is I want to be able to go to sleep without
having to turn off my machine, and in order to do that I have to MAKE
SURE Linux will not wake up; not just because it might wake me up, the
important thing is I aim to switch off the noisy CPU fan and the power
supply fan! This means if the computer were to wake up during the
night while I'm asleep it could be devastating to my hardware.

I use a BJC 4300. Works fine. You will need Aladdin Ghostscript 5.10.
Note, to print graphics and advanced text you will need to print Post Script
documents. Attached are my printcap and filter for print PS documents
to the BJC-4300 note printer "ps" is the post script printer.
Hope this helps...

Subject: Newbie need help again.
Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 22:28:29 +0200
Sorry for reposting this, but I seemed to have a slight format problems
while posting through DejaNews, so I'll post it again, this time with
modified questions (thanks for the people who tried to answer, but you
didn't help a lot, i'll rephrase the questions) :
Hello all ! I'm a newbie to linux and I like to ask a few questions.. aif
any
one help, I'll appreciate if you mail me, but replying to this group will be
ok too. I'm running RedHat 5.1 on a P2-300 with 64Mb ram and a RivaTNT
card.;
hard disk is partitioned part Win95 VFAT32 and part ext2.
Here are the questions :
1. I have my cd in /dev/hdc, and _most_ times linux doesn't recognize it
(I've installed by booting from that cd) I just can't mount it using the
mount command, and it complains that /dev/cdrom doesn't exist. if I put
something (cd or hdd) on /dev/hdb, it recognize my cd with no problems, but
if not, it sometimes (once in alot of boots) recognize it, sometimes not and
in the messages at boot time I see something like :
ide2 : ports in use - no probe.
and sometimes it acts normally, no messages, and no cd. is it normal ?
2. I'm using AfterStep (version 1.4 or something, how can I tell?) and I
used to have a list of windows at the top of the screen , a litlte similar
in function to the win95 taskbar, and it's not there lately - how can I
bring it back ?
3. is there a way to write, in linux programs like emacs, in languages other
than english ? I mean languages totaly diffrent in fonts, like hebrew or
russian ?
4. how can I make linux read the VFAT's long file names ?
5. where can I find a monitor that can display network traffic (I have an
internal modem and using
dial-up ppp) like the win95 dialer, something that shows it graphicly (as
simple as imitation for an external modem's recive/transmit lights). maybe
something that can be swallowed by AfterStep's wharf ?
6. somtimes when I try to write in a text box (especially in Midnight
Commander) , any character I write after the first one is written from right
to left ! (for exmple - I try to write 'true', and what comes out is
'teur'). is this normal ?
7. how can I make mutiplie folders in AfterStep's wharf (like the folder
containing the nxterm and netscape ? I can add stuff to that, but I
couldn't figure out how to make another folder like it.
8. can I run scripts from the buttons in the Wharf ? how do I make the
command line look like ?
Thanks for any help you can give.]

I've got one that I've been running for about a month. (Hmm... I moved on
December 5th, and got the modem to resolve "moving problems." Must be 3
weeks...)
I have to give it a mixed review. It's *definitely* less reliable at
getting me connected than my old Motorola 28.8K modem. This may be a line
problem; dunno.
It is, at least, well-behaved from the Linux point of view.

Subject: Lexmark 4029 - Lessons Learned
Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 16:12:23 -0500
This information may be useful to anyone trying to get lpr to print
postscript files
on a Lexmark 4029 printer.
First set up the Lexmark in the "ps" mode.
You can use this perl script:
#!/usr/bin/perl
# This script must be executable: >chmod 755 filter
# This script turns on the PostScript Mode
open(LEX,">/dev/lp1");
# Start with cntrl D as they say on page 4-1
print LEX "\x04";
# Set the postscript mode see page 8-2 of Lexmark Manual -ESC [ K ln
hn Mode PID
#PS -----------------------08---->|
#GL-------------------------03--->|
# PCL ------------------------02-->|
# PPDS-------------------------01->|
#
|
print LEX "\x1B\x5B\x4B\x03\x00\x06\x31\x08";
#
close (LEX);
# End of perl script.
Set up the /etc/printcap as:
lp|lex:\
:lp=/dev/lp1:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lexmark:\
:mx#0:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lexmark/lm-ps:\
:sh:
Note that I compiled a file I found on the Internet and renamed it
"lm-ps". It
looks like this:
/* lm-ps.c , many thanks to anonymous */
#include <stdio.h>
main(argc, argv) int argc; char **argv; {
char buf[BUFSIZ];
putchar('\004');
/* Note you could add putchar() to switch the printer to ps mode
by sending ESC [ K Ln Hn | Mode | 49 | DSM | DSOPT1 ...
as described in the user manual , but I use a perl script to do it.
*/
while (fgets(buf, sizeof(buf), stdin)) {
fputs(buf, stdout);
}
/* Specific requirement for Lexmark for EOF marker "^D " */
putchar('\004');
fflush(stdout);
}
Generate the postscript file to be printed, mine does not accept
PostScript Level 2 so
I use Postscript Level 1. ( Try using " enscript --ps-level=1 myfile
-pmyfile.ps ")
Next you have to avoid printing the header, so you use:
lpr -h myfile.ps
I hope this saves someone the trouble I had!
By the way, when debugging these kinds of problems it is useful to
redirect the /dev/lp0 to
a file and then examine the results, looking at the hexdump of the
printer can be tedious!

Jean Baribeau

I have RedHat 5.1 does it come with kernel compiled for APM ? (it comes
compiled with most of everything..) I tried to use 'halt -p' , but it works
the same as plain old 'halt', i.e. doesn't power off the system. also
writing 'poweroff' as written in the man pages results in 'unrecognized
command' prompt or something.

I have one, but it doesn't sound very good. Find for games I guess,
not great for music.

Subject: epson stylus 640 printer?
Date: 01 Jan 1999 11:11:50 -0800
I have an epson stylus 600 at work and I use magicfilter and
ghostscript to print to it satisfactorily. I have tried the same set
up to print to a new epson stylus 640 at home (and I've tried an
upgrade to alladin ghostscript 5.50). It almost/sort of works, but I
get erroneous underlining. I would appreciate pointers to the
differences between the 600 and the 640, or pointers to an appropriate
place to look (I have looked around the ghostscript web site and not
found anything.)
