The Prophet II MX has a significantly higher theoretical fillrate than
the Prophet SDR. Memory bandwidth is about the same. Translation: The
Prophet II MX should perform at least as well as the Prophet SDR on 3D
apps, and in some cases should do quite a bit better.
For 2D stuff, you're not going to notice a difference... if you don't
care about 3D, go with whichever card you can get a better deal on.

Exactly... video cards reached the maximum in 2D a couple of years ago.
Now, even a no name card will be as fast in 2D apps as the newest big
one...

www.intellesale.com has a bunch in stock, at least 12-13. IBM PC Server
325, dual processor on-board SCSI. (They're selling them stripped down, one
processor, looks like the original minimum drive/memory config.) As of 24
Dec 2000, they wanted $199 each for them.

Check out the 'Alsa' drivers ( http://www.alsa-project.org )
Make sure you thoroughly read the INSTALL file in the alsa-driver source for
details about adding oss emulation, etc... in /etc/modules.conf
(btw... I do have the same chipset on an integrated motherboard)

Where did you get the idea that the type should be 20 ? Looking at
/usr/src/linux/drivers/isdn/hisax/hisax.h shows that the type
should be set to 21 for the Teles PCI card.

I've tried 2.2.17 and 2.2.18. If I use the Tupli.c (0.91ppc or 0.89H)
drivers, the receive rate is ok, but the transfer rate is few kb/s.
Then I tried the DEC EtherWorks (DE4XX) driver, oh, the NIC works
normally......

There isn't much that can be done. First, you have to realize that the
telcos are under no obligation to provide anything better than "voice
quality" for your line. That basically equates to supporting V.32biis
(14400bps). That we get better than that is a tribute to technology and to
the fact that most telcos exceed the requirements.
You can sometimes get some help from the telco by finding audible noise on
the line and complaining about it. To check for audible noise, you can pick
up the phone, dial a digit, cover the mouthpiece securely, and just listen.
It should be quiet; no hum, no buzzes, no crackling, no crosstalk. Since you
live in a rural area with a small telco, you may not get any relief even
from this though.
You should first try to eliminate any problems caused by your own internal
wiring or devices on the line. Start by removing any phone, answering
machine, Fax machine, etc. from the line. Put only one modem on the line and
then test it. If there is a significant improvement, put the devices back on
the line one at a time and test between each one to determine which one
causes a problem. If there is no improvement when the devices are off the
line, you can runa cable direct to the telco interface box test jack
(assuming you have one) or by wiring a separate line in from the interface
box to a jack and trying that by itself. That will eliminate inside wiring
as the cause. If neither of these helps then the problem is squarely in the
telco's area and you are at their mercy.

Even if he's unpleasant, can you schmooze him? Sometimes it's helpful to
just be as polite and friendly as possible even though the other guy is a
creep. It's amazing what a little pseudo-sympathy can do to influence people
to help.

If it already had the latest code, it won't upgrade or even try to flash, I
don't think.

You're welcome. Hopefully, USR will repair or replace the modem and you'll

Uh...I think you're thinking of Iomega, not Syquest. Syquest
actually made (makes?) the SyJet, which is a 1.5 GB cartridge unit.
(The cartridge contains no head-disk assembly, merely the platters.)
But I'm pretty sure both units are semirandom access, as opposed to tape,
which is sequential access.

I am using the same chipset on a 599LMR motherboard and the standard
v2.2.13 kernel drivers. It works fine ... with the following
exceptions.
There are several different sound "methods" in use under Linux and
different applications use different ones. The older linux method is
the /dev/audio interface ... the CMI8738 driver uses the newer (?)
/dev/dsp interface.
That said what application are you using to play the wave file? On my
system I use Geunter Geiger's play utility that is part of the Debian
package BUT somehow ended up on my heavily updated Slackware 7
installation. For a GUI application I use Sound Studio. I also have
Real Player and splay (for mp3) working as well. Also, I have Speak
Freely running.
I did find that XMMS wouldn't work without using it along with esd
(Enlightenment sound daemon).
I still don't have a handle on the Linux sound requirements BUT it all
works for me ... I've found I just have to be selective with my
applications.
Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Hi,
I hope some people read this and can help me out.
I have a ATI Rage Pro pci video card that has s-video and tv-out. I want
to be able to use the s-video and tv-out on the card. Now, is this down
by the app(like what I find on Video4Linux) or is it in Xfree86?
I want to know if there has been a driver developed which accesses the
s-video and tv-out on the ATI card. If so, a pointer to the source would
be great.
If not, then I would like to know how would I go about to use the
s-video and tv-out. I just need some clarification on if the actual app
would take care of loading up the s-video interface and tv-out interface
or if it is the actual video card driver(Xfree86?).
Thanks for any help in advanced and if it isn't too much trouble, can
you also cc: you rhelp to my e-mail?
Gracias!
