I have just a slight problem, maybe you can help?
CMD is stupid enough to tab-expand things to full pathnames, e.g. I'm here
U:\Osvaldo\Java>appletviewer mand_
then I strike TAB and I get this crap:
U:\Osvaldo\Java>appletviewer U:\Osvaldo\Java\MandelApplet.html
which is not going to work, because the appletviewer utility doesn't like
full pathnames (which are not proper URLs), or maybe the utility is broken,
but the poit is, that's not an isolated case. Expanding to full pathnames
is a boneheaded idea. Only including quotes for names with spaces is a good
thing, but nobody should use spaces in the first place :) things like
"Program Files" are horrible for CLI.

The Fasttrak requires a driver to operate and there is no driver for Linux.
If what you want is RAID 0, I can't help you but if you're looking for IDE
RAID 1 mirroring under Linux, you can get that with the Arco DupliDisk -

[Cross-posted to comp.os.vms since some old VMSers may know the answer to
this.]
Once upon a time I lived happily in VMS-land. I was able to do a nifty backup
of my application database by doing the following:
1) Shutdown an application (or throw off users) so that no users were using it
and thus the database files were 'quiet'
2) 'Remove' a member drive from a VMS 'shadow set' (two drives in mirror
configuration)
3) Restart the application so that users could use it again (now running on
a single drive). Minimal downtime for the application.
4) Mount the removed member privately and backup the application database
files to tape.
5) When tape backup complete, re-join the drive into the shadow set to get
"caught up" with the existing drive in the shadow set. **NOTE**: Get the
command line reversed on this step and you 'screw the pooch' royale.
===========
Now... it's a few years later and I am now in Linux land. I want to be able
to do the same kind of thing- minimize application downtime but ensure a
good backup of the database such that all of the various database files are in
harmony with each other.
Is there a way to do this under Linux using something like RAID1?
Experts step forward please... my RAID knowledge is limited.
Thanks-
Lee Roth

Try getting it to work with 'minicom' at the console screen first.
You won't be able to do anything after connecting to a ppp site
but at least you'll see whether you can dial out and make the
connection.

Ummm, what do you mean about the file system being 32 bit. On my Alpha I
have no 32 bit limit on the maximum size of files or file systems. I
regularly handle files in the 6 to 8 GB range. Where does the 32 bitness
come in?
I think that due to a bug you can actually only have 2 GB of physical RAM.
I am not sure however that the Alpha is the best system for the the proposed
application. It seems to be best for numerically intensive tasks (i.e. lots
of floating point) especially if - as I do - you can compile your programs
under DEC Unix before running them on your Linux box.

In zsh, bind reverse-menu-complete to some key.
Using the NT command line is roughly equal to using
/bin/sh as your interactive shell -- avoid when possible.
I know bash was ported to Win32 so there is simply no
excuse to use the cmd.com.

Subject: Travan TR-5 limited to 4G

I've gotten my new TR-5 SCSI (Adaptec 1542) drive (HP SureStore T20i) up
and going under Linux (2.0.36, RedHat 5.1-5.2) for the most part. tar
happily dumps data to the drive until I cross the 4G line, at which it
promptly dies. This being a 10G native drive (and me having 8G drives
to back up), this is more of a bug rather than a feature.
My version of mt (0.5) doesn't know the density code reported (0x47),
and this may be the source of the problem. Quite possibly, the system
thinks it's a TR-4 (4G) drive and writes according to that density / #
of tracks. (FWIW, The latest version of mt (0.5b) has nothing about it
in the source code either.)
Has anyone gotten a TR5 cartridge out to the full 10G? Any ideas how to
tell the system the appropriate # tracks / size / density?

Subject: SCSI CD-ROM problem
Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 18:03:35 GMT
Hello all,
after installing RedHat 5.2 from an IDE CD-ROM, I decided to replace the
drive with a Pioneer DR-766 SCSI CD-ROM. The problem is that I cannot mount
it. The 'mount /dev/cdrom' command gives a message saying '/dev/cdrom is not
recognized as a block device' and it fails. '/dev/cdrom' is the name in the
file system setup. The SCSI card is an Adaptec AHA-2940AU, and during boot,
both the card and the CD-ROM drive seem to be recognized properly.
Termination is also okay as far as I can tell. I know that the CD-ROM and
also SCSI in general have to be supported in the kernel. After reading the
kernel howto, I decided to re-run the configuration to make sure they are
enabled. Unfortunately, the 'make config' command does not work, it's not
located in the /usr/src/linux directory as the howto says it should be.
Can someone give me advice what should I do to make the drive to work?
Thanks,
Tamas.

is easyer to setup than the internal I know I have the internal and
