Make sure that you have VFAT support included in your kernel, or alternately
type " insmod vfat". Then mount your VFAT partition with " mount -t vfat

Subject: problem w/ usr 56k v.90
Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 23:31:06 -0800
I've got a fresh install of rh5.2 and have set up my modem just as I have
many times before with other modems on other machines, but am having an odd
problem. When it dials, it connects and logs in properly, but I cannot ping
anything (i've tried the ip of my nameserver for instance). Nothing passes
through the connection. I can deactivate the connection and it will hang
up, and can redial, but with the same effect.
Additionally, when I type 'route' to view the routing table, it seems to
hang without showing any routes, and I must ^c it to return to my prompt.
I think this is somewhat hardware related, as the software config should
produce working results. Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks,
Nik

I will be installing RedHat 5.2 and I have a S3 Virge/GX 86C385 video card.
The XFree86 info from RedHat lists the S3V server for an S3 Virge card, but
the SVGA server for the 86C385. Which should I use?

Well, of course it is in their interest to claim that they hold
"essential" patents for an implementation of MPEG2. However,
reality is likely to be a bit different and there are probably
workarounds. Note that a non-infringing decoder does
not need to claim standards compliance; it simply has
to produce good output. Furthermore, the patents don't
apply everywhere in the world.

Yea but at US$350 for a bloody display server they have to be joking. I just
ordered the desktop and laptop versions ($125 and $250) out of necessity.
Although these seem to be great products I think they are ridiculously priced.
Thankfully work is paying for mine.

sure did..
by manually loading the modules without options they seem to defaulting
to standard settings for the IRQ, DMA etc. Remove the entries (or at
least comment them out) from your /etc/conf.modules file .. then
reboot.. and try loading
modprobe zftape
modprobe ftape
modprobe ftape-internal
you can check that these load correctly by typing
lsmod
you should see something like
[root@linux]# lsmod
Module Pages Used by
zftape 21 0
ftape-internal 3 0
ftape 34 [zftape ftape-internal] 0 (autoclean)
then try to mount the device
ftmt -f /dev/qft0 status
.....
This actually worked for me! and I did a complete system backup last
night. Unfortunately I then installed an IDE hard disk in my
SCSI system and then ran lilo to append a memory problem.. killing the
system boot.
Thank god for backups!

Hey,
Before I installed Redhat, I disabled plug-n-play using the dos disk and linux
found the card just fine. However, if I turn plug-n-play back on for use in
Win95
and then forget to disable it again when I boot into linux, it completely
messes up the configuration and says "Delaying eth0 initialization" on bootup.
So how do I get the ethernet card settings back to normal without re-installing
linux?
Thanx in advance.
P.S. - I tried to disable the plug-n-play again and boot into linux, but the
configuration was still messed up.

Hello everybody
I bought 4 days ago a Zoom Internal V90 faxmodem (model 2826) and
nothing seems to work. I'm using Linux and Win95, and on both of them I
have a problem : it doesn't work.
When I plug the cable in the modem and in the telephone plug, there is
no tone (phone plug <---> modem), so I can't dial.
If I do the following, I have a tone on Win95(phone plug <--> modem
line<>modem phone <--> telephone) , but I have to hang up the telephone
for the modem to be able to have tone and compose.
This is not a good solution ... the modem only connect to 19200 bps.
Under Linux, this is not working at all, but someone who's got the same
told me it's working fine for him.
Is there something strange with this modem or did I made something
wrong. I disabled P&P on the card and I'm using COM 4 IRQ 3, like I did
for my old modem .... I'm still using.
If you know what's happening, let me know.
Thanks in advance.

I tried installing with 'Generic Multisync' and it seemed to work but
the screen was slightly hourglass shaped... curved in about an inch on
each side. So, I re-install RedHat 5.1 and select CM 14bla bla
bla (for a Lite On 14" monitor I 'spose), and when I do startx it
just comes up with several lines of text, with a yada yada not
found punch line.
and and and I wouldn't be so hesitant, but after the session, I was in
win95 and the monitor looses the RED gun for a while, 'comes back...
goes away... comes back'. I reinstall Diamond's In control tools and
optimize. Maybe that was the 91 meg game I just loaded but.... I mean
I'm a little colorblind but.... but I guess I could put up my NEC 3D
which certainly is a versatile multisync, but I don't want to blow it
up either. I read some brave stuff in etc/X11/etc/README.XXX. Has
anybody heard of a Lite On monitor? Maybe I should stick to the cmmd
line. My mouse, zipdrive, cdrom work... 'should be thankful. Thanks in
Advance.

Date: Sat, 02 Jan 1999 03:14:53 -0500
HI,
I recently bought a HP Colorado 5GB tape drive with an ATAPI (IDE) interface.
I attached it to my machine running RH 5.2 (2.0.36 kernel). When I put in a
new Travan 5GB preformatted cartridge (3M Imation) and attempt to access it
I get errors. The messages that I see are:
ide-tape: Block location is unknown to the tape
Aborting request
ide-tape: Rewinding tape failed
/dev/ht0: Input/output error
This was in response to
mt -f /dev/ht0 status
When using the drive under Windows 98, it appears to be working O.K.
Any ideas what I may be doing wrong or overlooked?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The current video card is a 32 bit pci device with 1Mb of ram, hence
somewhat slow under linux at 800x600 with 256 colors and unaccelerated
under the XFree86_SVGA driver (3.3.2).
It does a great job of matching the multisync . monitor's preset
modes and the old ibm and later VESA video modes, and has software
drivers for them under dos/windows and runs runs at decent refresh
rates.
It also has VESA display power management under dos and linux.
Those early text and graphics modes are used by a load of old but
irreplaceable dos programs that will never get rewritten or replaced,
nor ,its appears, go obsolete.
Looking at the Millenium II, it seems to support only VESA vga 640x480
and upwards, and with limited dos functionality, e.g. dpms.
I had a look at a few old favorites like S3 Virge 3D and drew a
similar blank with a couple of video card makers spec. sheets.
Your suggestions please.

Sorry to add to the noise but...
RedHat 5.1 networking wont accept the Kingston PnP network card in my P300
(It was installed easily in in95 as a standard NE2000 but W95 seems to think
it's a Realtec RTL8019 PnP LAN adapter - who cares - it works just fine).
I'm using the address and IRQ reported by windows on the same machine but it
still fails to find an NE*000 card at the specified address. I can't find
any docs to help when this happens.
Coincidentally, I can't get the SB AWE32 to work either (can't remember the
specific error message for this one). My assumption is that it's because
W95 always configures them as PnP devices at runtime - so there resources
may not be set when Linux boots. This is kind of confirmed by the fact that
I've never had a problem configuring networking on any other Linux
installation (because no previous ones were true PnP cards - though they
were a real pain to get going under windows...).
If anyone has any ideas of how I can get around these problems I'd be very
grateful.
Thanks.
