Any reason why you can't run the modem off COM2 ? You'd free up IRQ5
(which might also be a source of conflicts with other stuff).
Also, have you tried rebuilding the kernel to add what's missing ?
Start with /usr/doc/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.gz.

Read the manual page of lilo.conf to find out how to set up a file called
/etc/lilo.conf and run /sbin/lilo (make sure you are root). If all works OK,
lilo is installed.

I am running RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36) on a Toshiba 480CDT laptop with a
Yamaha OPL3-SAx soudnchip. I got the card working fine, but every time I
reboot, I have to reconfigure the card before it will play anything. The
configuration is the same as I leave it, but I don't get any sound until I
run through the setup again. This is with using 'setup' and 'sndconfig'.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

A external TA behaves like a modem and you take ppp & diald to get it
running.
A internal card is more like another network card. You'll need i4l
(isdn-for-linux), compiled as a module (www.suse.de)
No problems (this message runs out of my internal net over a linux box, ISDN

First make sure you have compiled scsi cdrom into your kernel as either
a module or actually into it. You might want it compiled into it the
kernel first, just to see where linux sees it as being during boot. Run
'dmesg' if you have to. Then 'del /dev/cdrom', this is a symlink to
where ever your ide cdrom used to be. Then 'ln -s /dev/<scsi cdrom id>
/dev/cdrom'. All will be ok then.

There are two versions of this modem: the WinModem, and the regular PnP
modem. The WinModem will not work; the PnP will. I'm not sure how many
different versions of these modems exist, but the PnP one I use with linux
has jumpers on it that allow you to manually set the IRQ and COM port used;
if the jumpers are unset the modem relies on a PnP configuration.
