i would just like to speak with anyone who has any experience installing

linux on a casio fiva palmtop.
as it uses a different processer than the norm

were there any major problems with the install and how does linux run on
it.

i am buying one and would rather put linux on it than windows

Using the ALSA driver, the "sound-on-boardchip" works fine on my 7KXA
under RH 6.1. But others have had problems getting it to work, so YMMV.
It's probably worth a shot, though.

I've been running an Athlon700 + G400 for about 3 months without
problems, so there must be something more then just that.

Just a question about the Live! series: does anyone know the differences
between all of the models, cuz there seem to be quite a few (and does the
"Gold" exist?)? I've found that their website's description sucks.

Thanks

I would imagine that he's reccomending non-ECC due to cost-effectiveness,
e.g. the ECC RAM is really only for servers or mission critical systems.
Some may also argue that CAS2 offers a slight performance boost over lets
say, CAS3 ECC RAM, which I happen to run in my system. It really shouldnt
make any difference for a home system, but I would choose a decent
manufacturer, Corsair or Viking. As far as the ASUS recommendation, I can
definitely back that statement up, I've got an ASUS P2B that I bought a
couple of years ago and the damn thing is still solid as a rock, even
after many system rebuilds, torture testing, you name it.

Yes, I can comfirm that Slackware 7.0 comes with netconfig that
automatically detects for your NIC. This work with the out of the box
kernel. I'm not sure whether this works after you recompile a new kernel
verion. Then again, when you recompile a new kernel version you should know
what you are doing.

I wanted to try. I downloaded it. But never installed it. =) I'm
wondering. I have a sensor which is plug into the extra socket which I
want to use to monitor my Voodoo 3. Can I get reading from it?

Hmm I don't want lm_sensors because I don't want to screw up my Slackware

Thanks! I tried the instructions for compiled drivers and that didn't

Either that, or just buy another 3C905B.

Subject: ThinkPad 600X Modem and kppp/pppd
Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 04:29:20 GMT

I have an IBM ThinkPad 600X, which has a Lucent Mini PCI modem. I am
running RedHat 6.2, which has version 2.3.11 of pppd, and I am loading
the ltmodem.o module. I use kppp to set up my ppp connection. In the
past, I have been able to use the modem under Linux to hook up to my ISP
(AT&T Worldnet), which uses CHAP authentication. In the last few days,
however, I have not been able to do so. What happens upon launching
kppp is that, after the modem apparently makes a connection, the
"Starting pppd..." message appears on the Login Script Debug Window of
kppp and I eventually hear a small "pop" (apparently the modem
disconnecting) and get a message box stating that pppd failed to start
in time. I also get a "Signal 15" message in my log. Running ps -ax
reads as follows:

771 ? S pppd 1152000 -detach crtscts defaultrout -pap user [my ISP id
number]

This is the same as what is produced by my properly-functioning desktop
computer (which has an ISA Creative Modem Blaster Flash 56II Modem),
except that "ttyS1" shows up as the tty column in the desktop as opposed
to a "?" in the ThinkPad. It thus seems to me that the problem may have
to do with the inability of pppd to get ahold of the modem device. In
the ThinkPad, I have set up /dev/modem as my modem device in kppp.
/dev/modem in turn is a symbolic link to /dev/ttyS14, which is
apparently the name of the Lucent modem under its driver. This
arrangement seemed to work in the past (as recently as last week) and I
haven't made any significant changes to the configuration of the
ThinkPad. Any thoughts or suggestions as to how I could get this modem
working again under Linux would be much appreciated.

Subject: DDS2, stinit and device naming scheme
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 05:09:35 GMT

Hello,

I just acquired a Seagate Peregrine CTD8000R-S DDS2 4mm tape drive
(detected as an Archive Python 00095-001 by dip switch setting)
and after going through the stinit docs and the st(4) manpage I'm
still confused about the Linux tape device naming scheme:

- which device enables compression and which is for DDS or DDS2 tapes?
- Any ways of getting more than 8 devices per drive (4 rewind + 4
norewind)? Is it possible to have fixed/variable blocksize,
nocompression/compression for *each* of the densities (DDS, DDS-2),
ie, a total of 16 devices, counting the norewind devices?
- Why is it that if I do 'mt -f /dev/nst0a status' twice in a row
mt reports a different density for the tape?

[root@jezebel]# mt -f /dev/nst0a stat
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 1024 bytes. Density code 0x24 (DDS-2).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
 BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN

[root@jezebel]# mt -f /dev/nst0a stat
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 1024 bytes. Density code 0x13 (DDS (61000 bpi)).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
 BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN

ugh?

Here's my setup (RH6.2 with kernel 2.3.99.pre9):

I have the st driver as a module and I initialize with stinit
by having the following line in conf.modules:

post-install st /sbin/stinit

I created the st devices as per the man st(4).

/etc/stinit.def:

manufacturer=ARCHIVE model = "Python 00095-001" {
scsi2logical=1 can-bsr can-partitions auto-lock
mode1 blocksize=0 compression=0 density=0x13
mode2 blocksize=1024 compression=0 density=0x13
mode3 blocksize=0 compression=1 density=0x24
mode4 blocksize=1024 compression=1 density=0x24 }

If I run stinit manually with verbosity, here's what I get:

[root@jezebel]# /sbin/stinit -v -v
Trying to open database 'stinit.def'.
Trying to open database '/etc/stinit.def'.
Open succeeded.

stinit, processing tape 0
