Hi All,
I am not able to configure my Yamaha XWAVE card in Linux (it is working
perfectly under Win NT).
Has anyone used this card succesfully in Linux ? Please share with me the
steps that are required to make it work.
I also have Open Sound System for Linux installed. I ran the configuration
utility that comes along with it (/emp/osslinux-3.8.1z/oss-install ) it gave
me a long list of cards but mine was not listed in that.
Thanks in advance,
Abhishek.

Absolute rubbish, although Iomega says the same thing.
"formatting" a Zip disk isn't really formatting anything. It's just
writing data to sectors that were formatted at the factory. (If you
actually lose the format itself, you have to send the disk back to
Iomega for replacement - the Zip tools can't rewrite the low-level
format.)
In Iomega's utilities, any disk formatted without the Tools is called
"field formatted". The disks work just fine.
I have successfully formatted Zip disks under all varieties of Windows
and OS/2. And this without any Iomega software installed anywhere in
the system. I haven't tried ext2fs yet, but there's no reason why that
should be any different from FAT or HPFS. (And others have already
posted that they have done it.)
I suspect that the original poster's problem stems from his blowing away
the original partition, and creating a new one in slot-1. Personally, I
would have created the new file system in the already-existing
partition-4 that was already present. I would try formatting the disk
with the Iomega tools to re-create the original partition table, and
then formatting partition 4 as ext2fs.

I assume you're aware that you can mount DOS-style Zip disks as type
"vfat". You can copy Linux stuff there and the long names will be
stored as Windows-style long names. If that's the main reason for
ext2fs, it's not necessary. (Of course, you lose the owner, group and
permissions when copying to vfat, but you didn't mention that.)
Personally, I prefer to leave my Zip disks in VFAT format, so I don't
have to remember that it's not DOS/Win compatible. If I need to move
Linux files and preserve everything, I make a tar file on the Zip disk.

I'm running RH6.0, standard workstation install. I have what Windows IDs
as an ALS4000 soundcard, using IRQ9 for MIDI and 10 for the PCI audio.
I cannot get the sound working under Linux. Kernel is compiled for sound
support; the drivers load on bootup, but report [FAIL]: device or
resource busy. I tried running sndconfig, and selecting both of the ALS
options, as well as the generic SB option, but when sndconfig attempts
to play the test sound, it also reports "device or resource busy".
This is a PCI sound card, but I don't know whether it's plug and play. I
tried running pnpdump, but it didn't find anything.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I experienced such a problem a few weeks ago. If you happen to read
the documentation for the DAC960 driver (1), you'll find out that it
is limited to only ***SIX*** partitions.
I tend to consider 6 is not enough but we don't have the choice.
Especially since there doesn't seem to be a lot of RAID competition
for Linux (Adaptec are probably too intently involved in their
'doze 2000 drivers to bother about Linux users...).
Mylex AcceleRAID are very good boards, however, and Mylex's Technical
Support was blazingly fast at supporting me when I bumped into this
problem.
Kind regards,
Yann

Sorru to interrupt in this one , but I have also a little scsi-problem.
I just bought a scanner (mustek) and there was a scsi-card with it.
The only problem is when I install scsi from my RedHat 6 cd I get a list of
drivers with the DTC3180 between it.
Only I have a DTC3181 , and with autoprobe he cant find it.
Do you have a tip (and I dont mean : "buy a real scsi-card")

You should be fine. Stores around here are doing both the stotket and

earlier warnings, Intel has not yet disabled SMP in the celerons, and

Yes. After a few days trying to figure it out I determined that I
needed to recompile the standard kernel with sound support and
indicate that it should load an ES1370 module. Yours may be slightly
different and use the ES1371 module - try them both.

Echo the CPU fan with ball bearings. Fans with sleeve bearings
are a false economy; I had two fail on me in six months:( I've found
that the inside of my 24/7 box stays cleaner with a filtered fan
running tha without, presumably because the clean air coming into the
case prevent the ingress of cack as it leaves.
Some CDR drives were rumoured to get quite hot as a result of
a large power draw, although I have not found this ot ne the case with
my CDR.

Problem: In linux my system comes to a complete freeze usually when am
am compiling something or doing some high computational task such as

audio and during high computational tasks.
I have bought new memory, put a bigger fan on the procesor, and put the
bios setting to the default failsafe ones.(my bios is an AMI with text

I think that about sums it up.
