Hi I have an ISA pnp sbAWE64 and I just doesnt want to work. I got all the
resource settings from windoze and it didnt want to take it in sndconfig. I
installed OSS which actually works but its shareware and its MONO
sound..which sucks too. Will a kernel upgrade resolve these issues? Im
currently running 2.0.36
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I SO MUCH want to make the
conversion to Linux from win95 but these bindups are really discouraging and
nerveracking. My wife is gonna leave me from spending so much time every
night after work trying to set it up! :)

Subject: Pro-Multimedia PM-(S)240N OPTi-82C924 Sound Card

I've been stuffing around trying to get this thing to work under RedHat
5.2 (Linux 2.0.36) and looking for Usenet solutions. Couldn't find
anything in the FAQs, HOWTOs and comp.os.linux.hardware but eventually
stumbled on the answer by accident. Thought someone out there might need
this.

The sound card is (according to the Sound-HOWTO) one of many
'Soundblaster compatibles' - which isn't very compatible. It is not
enough to use the SB or SB Pro drivers. The following may well work with
other 82C924 cards as well as the Pro-Multimedia - however, the card
used to be used in a Win95 system and may have been configured by PnP to
the setting below. I don't know. If you are also floundering around with
this thing and my settings don't work - maybe you need to try all the
different settings for I/O Port etc until it does work. Yes, I know this
is lamentable.

This worked for me:
===================

Apply a jumper to the 'disable PnP' strap on the card. (I have not tried
this without disabling PnP - I disable that by default whenever I put a
card in the system.

Use sndconfig to set the driver to MAD16 Pro (OPTi 82C929/82C930)

Set the following:

I/O Port 0x530
IRQ 7
DMA1 1
DMA2 0
MPU I/O 0x300
MPU IRQ 5

.... well that worked for me after simply ages of stuffing around. Best
of luck!!

Yes - go for the 1050. The 1040 supports PCL-4 - while the 1050 supports
PCL-6 - so you will get 600x600 dpi printouts from Linux (1200x600 from
windows). You will be able to expand the memory of the 1050 with a standard
72 pin SIMM module of up to 32 MByte.

I just bought a 1050. It works fine - my only complaint is, that it is a bit
noisy
with internal fan etc. - So hear it before you buy it !

Jack...

BTW.: Thanks to Grant Taylor for his posting to my questions earlier this
week on
the same matter - and for his list of printers at
http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/
Note, that the 1050 lists as working "mostly" (will not come up on the list
of
printers working "perfectly") - must be because you will not get the full
1200x600
dpi from the Laserjet driver in Linux.

Linux will work really well... except for the XServer.
There is a developpement version of it.
And perhaps the frame buffer X server will work.
With out an Xserver, you won't be able to enjoy Gnome and eyecandies like
enlightenment.

At least there was this line at the end of posting I got from creative.
(However it was not mentioned where to look at.. and there is linux text

And that is what I'm advocating. Plus the fact that any time I change
those docs, I must publicise the fact that I have made a change to all
interested parties. The bugfix (i.e. code-change) reporting can
mostly be saved for a (weekly/monthly) newsletter unless someone has

full_backup ... properly loads the right device driver modules,
and the tape driver _starts_ to run. It soon halts, though,
and nothing has been written to tape.

cartis 1 and label_tape (think that's the right name) ran
seemingly successfully.

Once halted after 10 to 15 minutes of waiting, afbackup e-mails
me a message that it was unable to operate the tape drive
(sorry, forget exact wording). full_backup is being run by
root, so permissions should not be an issue.

The ftape home page says that afbackup is supposed to work with
the ftape driver.

'tob' works, but afbackup seems more appropriate for my nascent
home-network.

Any thoughts as to what might be wrong -- would be much appreciated.
I've tried both the current Debian/slink version as well as
downloading & compiling the original source.

Subject: MPC310AT Missing 2GB
Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 16:34:07 GMT

I have recently built a PC using a Fujitsu MPC3102AT (10.2 GB) HDD and a
Supermicro P6SBA Motherboard with the intention of running various O/Ss in
different partitions. On installing the Hard disk and beginning to partition
it I realised that the disk was being reported as 8GB. On checking the bios
It seems that the geometry had been autodetected as 8.4GB with c/h/s as
16383/16/63 (Which when multiplied out gives about 8GB). On checking the
table on the drive, the folowing disks are shown C H S 8.45 GB 16383 16
63 9.74 GB 16383 16 63 10.2 GB 16383 16 63

Needless to say the supplier hasn't much idea and Fujitsu's website is just
plain confusing with the following info

Formatted storage capacity 10,240 MB
Disks 3
Heads (read/write) 6
Track capacity (formatted) 110,592 ~ 172,032 bytes
Bytes per sector 512 bytes
Cylinders 11,116
Sectors per track 192 ~ 336

I've never seen an approximate sectors per track before!

Has anyone managed to get the full 10.2 GB out of one of these? or has anyone
any ideas on how I'd go about it

Any help appreciated

Greetings,

I have changed to Mandrake 5.3 from SuSE.
During install I forgot to include the aha152x module for my internal
SCSI-ZIP. Can anyone help me to include the module now.

Everything works fine with "insmod aha152x aha152x=0x140,9,7,1", but
where is the place to include a command to auto-load the module when
needed? I've tried to add it to conf.modules:

alias sound sb
alias midi opl3
alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
options opl3 io=0x388
options aha152x aha152x=0x140,9,7,1

but this did not work.
I also don't know which ghost loads all the other modules :-(

Thanks in advance.

I have a Creative TNT and use the Riva TNT driver in X and it works
perfectly. I had to use the Riva 128 driver until I upgraded my kernel. Try
one of these two drivers and it should work. The Diamond driver won't work
with my card either.

A correct, but nonetheless irrelevant answer.

A relevant answer is that Redhat 5.2 ships with a 2.0.35 kernel which
as far as I am aware can support up to 18 disks of completely arbitrary
size.

I have run a machine with 5 18Gb drives under this Kernel, so
you should have no problem with larger than 2GB drives.

Files can only be 2GB, but filesystems can be vast.

Ummm...cua* devices are obsolete. Besides they were orginally only
ment for dial-out devices. Use the ttyS0(com1) ttyS1(com1) devices.
Also vmware has its own news server at news://news.vmware.com, check
