Take a look at your BIOS - that's settable there. Or at least I can on
mine. But at least it's somewhere to start.

I'm running a ViRGE/DX happily at 1154*862*16bpp suing the XVGA server.
I'm under the impression that it can be pushed to higher color depths
with either SVGA or S3V drivers, but that the acceleration will suffer.
XF86config added a few performance options, commented out, that I
haven't had time to fiddle with, yet. When time permits, I'd like to
get an X benchmark program and see how much they do.

Some PS printers are more sensitive to line brakes in the PS source than
others. HPs are, DEClasers aren't. Just use lpr -l file.ps and you should

Subject: mouse trouble
Date: Sun, 03 Jan 1999 01:05:57 GMT

This may be strictly a hardware problem, but it's kinda weird. What I
have here is a 5x86 @ 133 MHz, 16 MB RAM, and a serial mouse running
Linux 2.0.30. The mouse is connected to COM 1, but I've tried it on
other ports as well.

The facts:

- The AMI BIOS doesn't recognize the mouse.
- The mouse works on another computer.
- A different mouse doesn't work.
- The system recognizes the UART 16550A serial controller on the
correct interrupts (according to setserial).
- Neither gpm nor X works, but I get no error messages.
- In certain cases, when I shut down X manually, it reports inability
to get mouse information, but in others it doesn't. Depends what ports
I have set up.

Conclusions:

- The serial lines on the motherboard work.
- The mouse is not broken.
- Linux *sees* the mouse (see last fact, above).
- The only part of the system left that might not be working is the
cable that connects the COM1 header to the mouse.

Any advice here? I'm about at wit's end. I suppose I could try and
hunt down another cable, but it would take some work and I'm not sure
it would even fix the problem. Are there any Linux utilities other
than setserial which will verify that serial communications are
working?

TIA,

James

Today I bought a Kyocera FS-800 printer (standard 4MB RAM and KPDL2 =
Kyocera Postscript Level 2 Emulation) and put 4MB more in it (I have the same
problems without them).

Now I installed the printer as a postscript printer under Suse Linux 6.0 and
tied to print
something.

lpr .bashrc
just gives me an empty page

printing a valid postscript file p.ps (created with "a2ps .profile -nP >p.ps")
with "lpr p.ps", the data
seems to get to the printer, because the data receive lamp goes on and the
printer
display says "Es wird gedruckt"="Printing". I wait for 30 minutes but nothing
more
happens, the cancel printjob button on the printer (which works fine with any
other
printer emulation than kpdl) fails and I have to switch the printer on an off
again. The same happens if I make "cp p.ps /dev/lp1" so this shouldn't be a
queue problem, I think.

I install the printer as a HP Laserjet 4 (because it has a Laserjet5si
emulation build in too) and everything works fine (but its a ps-printer and i
want to use it as one).

So I tried windows and ther the all Windows drivers worked well (including
the PS-Drivers) but switching to dos and trying type p.ps >lpt1 and choosing
kpdl or kpdl(auto) as the emulation I get the same as in Linux?

What am I missing? Do I have to do something else? I tried it as a 300dpi and
600dpi (both in Linux printer setup and the printer menu itself) because I
thought 8 MB could be not enough memory, but the p.ps file is only 10 kb. I
tried tunelp and setting of different transferspeeds to the printer (also the
data seems to be send to it correctly because of the status-lamps of the
printer and no printjobs with lpq), but it didn't help.

Sorry, I am new to Linux and ps-printer installation, so hopefully this is
only a stupid question.

Thank you for any help.

Hi, first post to any linux group. I'm having problems getting my
Intellimouse working when running XFree86 3.3.2.3 with AfterStep 1.6.6
using the PS/2 port. It works fine in text mode, but after i startx
and move the mouse, the pointer jumps to the top of the screen and the
start menu pops up. Moving the mouse then only causes the pointer to
jump around the screen usually stopping again at the top of the
screen. I've searched for a fix but so far nothing, any ideas? BTW, X
also reports the following:

Warning: /dev/mouse unable to get status of mouse fd (Inappropriate
ioctl for device)

What is fd? I recognize the ioctl part, does this mean i need a new
driver? which one?

Thanks for any help,

Some BIOS's don't recognize serial mice. DOS and Windows uses serial
mouse driver to access mouse.

On my old Linux system I had to set the X configuration to work with
my serial mouse. It is in the section of /etc/X11/XF86Config:

# **********************************************************************
# Pointer section
# **********************************************************************

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "MouseSystems"
    Device "/dev/mouse"

/dev/mouse on my system is symbolically linked to ttyS0 (first serial
port).

Probably indicates that the Pointer Section in /etc/X11/XF86Config is
not set up properly.

I think fd stands for file descriptor. This refers to the special device
file which is used to pipe messages from your mouse into X or linux.
Could be you just selected the wrong mouse when configuring Xwindows.
Also, /dev/mouse is just a link to the real device that your mouse is
connected to. The link may be pointing at the wrong device. (But then
wouldn't the mouse fail to work in X entirely?).

My intellimouse worked quite well under XFree86 3.3.2 and 3.3.3. If you
want, you can try editing /etc/X11/XF86Config and find the section
entitled "Pointer" (don't forget to make a backup copy before you edit
the file). Change the protocol to "Intellimouse" (can't remember if the
"I" is capitalized or not). Save, exit and restart X windows. Hopefully
this will correct your problem.

Good Luck!

I get this error message when booting Linux (RH 5.1 kernel
2.0.35):

SCSI host 1 channel 0 reset (pid 3) timed out - trying harder
SCSI bus is being reset for host 1 channel 0

This message is repeated until I Ctrl+Alt+Del.

I have an ST34520W (wide) HD connected to the
ribbon cable via a 68 pin to 50 pin adapter at ID 1.
If I disconnect this wide drive the problem goes away.
or
If I set the AHA-2940U BIOS so as to disable the
auto termination the problem goes away. (It took me
several hours to discover this.)

Is this a known "feature" of this controller card or
is it a problem with my wide HD or cabling?

Unfortunately, no. I tried to get this controller to work with linux. I
could boot to linux if I make zdisk, and then rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hdg2.
Unfortunatelly, when I make the /dev files again, by running MAKEDEV.ide, it
messes something up in /dev/lp1 because it dumps garbage to the printer, not
matter if I use a filter file or not. Finally had to dump the promise card,
and settle for just ide. I'd like to get this to work, but it just doesn't.
Can't use lilo either, cause it gets stuck on li and that's all it does.

I guess i should add that /dev/mouse is a sym link to /dev/psaux, and
my XF86Config is correct. It worked fine when it was on /dev/cua0 but
i now want to use that to connect my modem and i don't have a spare

Did you find an rpm for XFree86 3.3.3? I can't find one.

Any help you can provide will be most welcome.

Use fdisk /mbr to remove LILO from the MBR if you installed it there.
Use Partition Magic tho check your partitions.
Try to boot linux from the resque disk you created inside the
installation. (You did do it?!)
Try lilo without the linear option.
rtfm.

I had exaclty the same problem with Installing the 5.1 version of Red Hat
Linux. (US one, not Russian). What I did is first set it to 320x200 thru
XF86Config (not Xconfigurator). Then I went to the config file nad carefully
took out all the extra stuff not pertraining to my card (make sure that the
server you use is standard SVGA server). After that I played with my
frequences and the numbers that I finally settled on were 35-120 Mhz for my
monitor (you have to find the golden middle here--your monitor and card may
have a very narrow range of compatible frequences). Then I set my Virtual
Desktop to 800x600 at 8bpp (I could never get any more resolution or color
depth out of it, but I only had one meg of memory on the card). If this all
seems too vague, e-mail me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (remove one x
for getting the correct address) and I'll send you my config file, so that
you might have an example.
