Thanks Michael,

I looked at the web site and have now bought a
Mustek SE600SP. It seems the SCIS card which comes
with it is not considered to be any good so I
bought an Advansys 2930U to use with it.
I have a mind to move my hard disc and CDRom off
the Adaptec 1542 on to it and use the 1542 for
the scanner. Have you any thoughts on this?

I am still trying to get the GTK+ stuff to compile.
First I had problems with glib not finding stuff
but changed an environment variable to cure that.
Now, both before and after changing the value of
another variable I still get an error about header
version iinformation mismatches.

Unfortunately he won't as the SB live isn't supported at all under Linux
at the moment (no drivers and no hardware compatibility with previous
soundblasters).

Anyone --

I'd like to use a Yamaha DS-XG (YMF740) sound card on a Linux system. I
see there is some undocumented support in Alan Cox's version of the
2.2.6 kernel. Has anyone had any success with getting this to run? If
so, how? I've tried and not gotten too far, but I haven't delved deep
yet.

Alan Cox himself says he does not have this card, so he does not know
whether this will run.

Thank you,

Hi,

I have IDE CD-RW HP-8100 run on Lunix 5.2,
How do I get IDE CDRW working on Lunix ?
I read the man page and notice that cdrecord only work with SCSI.

Thanks in advance

You may have to build a kernel, or at least a module. The module name
is sbpcd, with device major ID 25. In "make xconfig", for example, it's
in the CDROM section, "Matsushita/Panasonic/Creative, Longshine, TEAC
CDROM support".

Otherwise, a second-hand quad-speed IDE CD drive is about $30 these days
;-).

I am running rh5.2 and cannot seem to get a 2nd
HD to work correctly. I know this is probably simple
and I know I will probably kick myself when I see the
problem.
Here is where I am at so far:

fsdisk /dev/hdb
           created hdb1-Primary-linux ex2- 1218.66mb

created directory /home/library on my 1st HD.

And this is where my problems start!
I use Linuxconf-filesystem-access local drive
to map hdb1 to /home/library
now when I open a shell window and cd /home/library
I find a copy of all my root directories and files.
"df -a" shows hdb1 is 28% used

Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually, the SVGA server is accelerated for many chipsets.

If you install a SMP kernel, then Linux will use both processors by default.
I believe RedHat 6.0 should have a pre-compiled kernel image that supports
SMP. For RedHat 5.2, you had to build a kernel yourself (and since RedHat 5.2
used a 2.0.36 kernel, you had to edit the Makefile to turn on SMP support, in
2.2.x kernels it finally became a configuration option).

Tulip cards tend to be really nice, and much cheaper than anything
comparable from Intel or 3Com, to boot.

The one thing to watch out for is if the card uses the very latest
Tulip chips, such as the 21143. This type is supported, but you have
to use the very latest drivers. As in, out of the box Redhat 5.2
doesn't have recent enough drivers.

Getting and installing the latest drivers is a piece of cake, though,
so don't worry. All you need is at:

Has anyone found a consistent driver solution for this type of printer?
Here are the various roadblocks/successes I've had with this printer
under kernel 2.0.36, RH5.2, Ghostscript 4.3, APS script 5.0:

1) Won't print html pages correctly (Netscape). Far as I can tell, it
prints the graphics/text in a manner determined by the order of the html
scripts. Won't print in color.
2) Prints B/W in Corel WP 8.0 using the pass-thru-postscript. Won't
print in color. Have tried all available drivers, including those found
at the Corel website.
3) Prints B/W in StarOffice 5.0 using Epson Postscript CARD Postscript.
Won't print in color.
4) Does print correctly in GIMP, which comes with it's own support for
Epson Stylus Color 400 printers. (woo hoo!)

My printcap file (config'd by APS) includes options for color output,
but it appears that all output to lpr is ignoring this request, and
printing only in Postscript B/W. I've included copies of my current and
original /etc/printcap files if someone could check them out.

Thanks,

Jason :)

If you're using IDE drives, the Arco DupliDisk offers a fairly inexpensive
hardware mirroring solution that writes data to both drives at the same time.

http://www.arcoide.com

But, I agree that you still need a removable backup in addition to mirroring
in case of a software glitch, fire, flood, etc.

Hey folks,

I gave my reliable 2MB S3 Trio to my father and thinking there's little
difference bought a 4MB S3 Virge/DX. It's been nothing the trouble with
corrupted displays under X. I've tried the latest copies of X3.3.3.1 both
SVGA and S3V with little success.

I'm at the point where I ready to scrap it but I'm not sure what to replace it
with. I need to following features:

- 2MB RAM minimum. 4MB perferable.
- 135 Mhz dot clock minimum to drive my ViewSonic 17 monitor.
- Solid Xfree86 Support.
- AGP perferable (have a slot for it) PCI acceptable. No ISA slots available.
- Cost under $30

I've seen Matrox G200 which fit the first 4 criteria, but the cost puts me off.

I'm not real finicky and I don't push video cards real hard, mostly just
netscape, text windows, and the occasional X app.

Any suggestions? E-mail my a copy of your response if you can...

Thanks in advance.
