Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm running SuSE Linux 6.3 on a Sony Vaio N505X.
I'd like to make use of the harddisk sleep mode, and if I set the idle
timeout to 5 seconds the drive really stops after 5 idle seconds.
But immediately afterwards it gets up again because some process seems
to write more or less continuously to the HD. I dimly remember a
newsgroup message where this phenomenon was attributed to unceasing
re-sync'ing.
Does anyone know what I should do
- to use the suspend mode or
- to find out who's writing to the disk?

But it's not a good reason when the user has specifically set the BIOS to
start with NumLock *ON*. Presumably he wouldn't do that with such a
laptop.

More news :)
It looks like the bios/chipset on the new p3v4x board does things a
little differently than the p2b.
The p2b went something like this :
Ok, the first drive is primary slave, but it's the first drive, so
lets call it hda
The second drive is secondary master, it's the second drive, so lets
clal it hdb
On the other hand, the p3v4x does this:
Ok, the first drive (primary master) is empty, we'll still call it hda
The second drive (primary slave) is your main hard disk, we'll call it
hdb
And so on and so forth.
Essentially this new board calls prim mast=hda, prim slave=hdb etc..
I dug up a bit of older lilo docs from the net, and apparently this is
the way it's supposed to do it :) Looks like my p2b wasn't following
the standard.
So, the fix was just to boot up with a boot disk set (slack), and edit
/etc/lilo.conf, /dev/cdrom, and /etc/fstab.
Just thought I'd pass it on, in case anybody out there was planning on
using this board.
cheers,
Adam

There is probably something about this on one of the Linux laptop pages,
but it is not easy to put your primary drive to sleep. You have atd and
crond reading from the disk, and maybe sendmail or other smtp server (you
can kill those). You have syslogd and klogd. You have kflushd that
flushes data to the hard drive and kswapd. If running a GUI you may have
a background program that monitors the cdrom or some other automounter.
And if you did get it to work it would slow you down when the drive has to
wind up again.
Your best bet is to forget about it when on AC and use suspend manually
when idle on battery power.
I cannot even figure out how to blank the backlighting on my Sony F450
since the BIOS has ACPI instead of APM. But I can use apm -s or Fn-Esc to
use deep suspend that shuts down everything except RAM. The 2.4.x kernels
will have ACPI support.

Look at your /etc/inittab file and replace
/sbin/update
by
/sbin/update -sX -fX
where X is the number of seconds that update will
repeats is disk syncing. Beware that large values of
X will postpone disk syncing and may leave your system
in an unstable state after some crash/powerfailure
Also have a look at your crontab file to see what's going on
there.

The Promise FastTrak IDE RAID is not ( yet ?) supported by Linux. If you
want to play with hardware IDE RAID on Linux you have to use the cards
made by 3ware (http://www.3ware.com/)

2) it's 128M, not 128m.
3) it should be 127M, just in case.
4) you're using an initrd. What is the point of that? You have a hard
