Hi all,
please help me out with the following two problems:
(1) To get my JAZ drive running, I first need to have my SCSI adaptor
recognized by the system. When I first installed RedHat 5.2 (as a
newbie), I wasn't able to make it recognize my JAZjet card, so I
installed with no SCSI options. Meanwhile I found out that linux
recognizes something when I use the option aha152x=0x340,11,7,1 when
prompted for SCSI parameters *during installation/upgrade*. After
reboot, nothing is found:
scsi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detected total.
So, I figure if I would re-install linux, it might work. However, if
possible, I would like to avoid this and simply (?) add the SCSI module
to the system. How do I do this? I have the following line in my
/etc/conf.module:
alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x
options aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1
but that doesn't seem to do the trick. Do I need to depmod or insmod
anything?
When I use the control-panel kerneld configuration tool, I see aha152x
and scsi_host listed. It does not get listed when I do /sbin/lsmod.
Here the relevant output from /sbin/modprobe -cv:
path[scsi]=/lib/modules/2.0.36
path[scsi]=/lib/modules/default
path[scsi]=/lib/modules
path[scsi]=/lib/modules/preferred
alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x
alias scsi_hostadapter off
options aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1
(2) Has anyone got a Maestro MPU401 sound card running?
What I found on a web page about it is: "The card appears identical to
the much more expensive VideoLogic Sonic Storm, it uses the same
chipset, can use its drivers, and is in design practically identical."
Since this article also states that "The card supports legacy DOS code
through SoundBlaster Pro compatibility..." I tried sndconfig with the
SoundBlaster Pro card as option, but to no avail.
When I start sndconfig, it tells me:
x A PCI sound card was found in
x
x your system. The details are:
x
x
x
x Model: UNKNOWN
Next step is:
x No PnP or PCI sound cards were found
x
x in your system. Please select your
x
x card type from the following list. x
Here I selected SoundBlaster Pro.
I left the settings as 0x220, IRQ 05, DMA 0 (at least for the IRQ I know
it is right from the Windows setup). After the unsuccessful attempt to
hear Linus say Linux, sndconfig went back to step 2.

I have been tinkering with a RH5.2 Install with a 2.0.36 kernel on a P2B
system with a Quantum fb ex 6.4 hd with UDMA.
I suspect a lot of the problems with HD errors is because of UDMA which I
have since disabled. When did the linux kernel start supporting UDMA? and is
this the possible cause of my disk errors?

You may have as many IDE interfaces with 2 devices each as you want.
Just make sure that you can provide them with the needed resources -
for details, see the ide.c driver in the kernel sources .
Sidenote: You'll have to use a boot argument or an "append=..."
statement for each controller beyond the first 2 IDE controllers, since
Linux doesn't autoprobe for them.

Subject: Installing a New SCSI Tape Drive.
Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 00:27:12 GMT
Hi all,
I want to install a new tape drive (Exabyte mammoth, external) with an
AdvanSys Ultra Wide SCSI controller (ASB3940UW-00) in a RedHat 5.2 box
(kernel 2.0.36-0.7). How do I know if the kernel supports SCSI? I did a
cat on /proc/scsi/scsi and it shows no devices are attached (I don't
have any SCSI devices right now).
[root@web /proc]# cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices: none
Does this mean I've to recompile the kernel before I can install the
tape drive? Or is it a dynamically loadable stuff that I can simply
configure by editing some file. If yes, what file I should edit and what
to edit? I believe RedHat has AdvanSys drivers. If not, where do I
specify these drivers? How does linux handle new hardware in general?
Does it probe during boot and detect the new hardware and install the
drivers?
TIA,
Nitin.

It should work fine. The latest version of XFree86 supports the #9
display card and the 1600SW monitor, although you have to dig through
the release notes a bit to find the mode lines for the monitor.

Hi.
I have a problem that is driving me up the wall.
We have a linux system (Redhat 5.2 with 2.2.6 kernel) on a Dual Intel
Pentium 2 350Mhz system.
System is connected on fast ethernet network to an ISDN router which
supports dial on demand access.
My problem is as follows:
I have setup a local e-mail server (sendmail and procmail) and all works
fine except that when someone sends even a local e-mail the ISDN router is
making a connection. I want the system to deliver local e-mail imediatley
and queue Internet e-mail for delivery every hour.
We donot run our own DNS server and rely on our ISP's servers for DNS.
How can I prevent sendmail from making the unnecessary connections. If you
have a copy of the sendmail.cf that you could post me and other system
settings, I would be most grateful.
Thanks in advance.

If you totally remove the cooling fans be prepared to have the cpu destroy itself.
On any greater than a 486 the fans are critical for operation.

Without any cooling, the thing is going to destroy itself in a short amount
of time. If you are lucky you'll get some symptoms first, but overall you
will drastically shorten the expected life of the equipment.
Peltiers are itty bitty heat pumps. They are really neat little devices, but
they aren't all that efficient, and the extra heat they create adds to the
heat that you have to get rid of (in other words you absolutely need a
cooling fan on the top of the little bugger, or it will become a heater
instead
of a cooler).
I would suggest trying to find a quieter fan, or moving the computer inside
of some enclosure where it will have adequate cooling but the sound will
be blocked for you.
Or get a laptop. They are designed for low power, and don't need so
much cooling.

It would seem that the mouse protocol is no longer being
correctly detected. On startup, some bios will detect an error
and display a message that passes onto the screen and is gone
quickly, so watch carefully. The command ls -l /dev/modem
should show a link to the correct device for your system. Recheck
the XF86Config file for the correct pointer device. If your
screen used to come up in 1024x768 and now only does 800x600,
the XF86Config file may have been changed. Try starting
X -probeonly > /tmp/x.out 2>&1
using a bash shell, and the resulting file should show that the
modeline for the 1024x768 is being rejected by the server.
You have an advantage in the rescue partition. Compare the
files and device information for the mouse and XF86Config.

Hi all,
My typical backup opernations will involve backing up a fileserver
(12GB), web/mail server (2GB), and database server (Informix SE, 5 GB).
All three servers are on redhat 5.2 and I want to back them all through
NFS at one place. Occassionally, I may have to backup some windows
machines on the network. I've samba running on the fileserver. I've an
Exabyte mammoth tape drive with AdvanSys Ultra wide SCSI card.
I'm evaluating Arkeia and BRU as my potential backup admin tool but
don't know how they compare (feel free to add other tools if you think
they work great for a simliar setup). My impression is that Arkeia has a
nice GUI (which I don't care) but is buggy. It also doesn't support
backing up NFS shares (i.e. Server pull). It means I must install their
client on all my servers that I want to back up. Its rather
inconvenient. Its another important shortcoming is that it doesn't
perform any validation. I believe BRU handles all of this ie. backing up
NFS volumes and data validation and so it looks like a good choice to
me. Are there any issues specific to BRU and RedHat 5.2 (glibc etc)? Is
the BRU RPM in the RedHat 5.2 CDROM a professional or personal version?
Whats the difference? Do I have to buy a professional copy for my backup
operations? Any other issues in installation?
TIA,
Nitin.

Does anyone have any DLT tape drive recommendations for Linux?
(Based on reliability, cost, performance, and capacity.)
