Also, make sure your color depth (bpp) isn't set too low.
There, better now? Now you can remove that 98 partition.

Subject: Sound and Modem help!
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 17:11:23 -0400
Linux does not seem to successfully configure these two devices; seems
to be a resource issue as sndconf generates an error indicating resource
issues when trying to play a sound sample, and kppp indicates that the
modem is busy when attempting to query. I can provide more details of
the error message if necessary for clarification.
Do I have to edit the isapnp file to ensure that they are allotted
correct resources? And by that, should I be thinking in terms of going
with the same resources identified by Windows device manager? (I have
Win98 and Mandrake Linux 6.0 on the same system. ) Now, I notice that
isapnp has a bunch of configurations, all commented; I understand I
should uncomment the config which is appropriate for the particular
card. As a newbie, I would appreciate any helpful suggestions. Overall
I am quite impressed by Linux in general and Mandrake's distribution in
particular.
Modem: Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI
Sound Card: Opti PnP
thanks,
raja..

I've had some problems too using ppp on a Mandrake 6.0. That happened
when I upgraded to kernel 2.2.11 until I noticed this version requires
ppp 2.3.8 or newer. Never had any problem since I upgraded to ppp-2.3.8.
BTW, the problem I had was LCP timeouts sending config requests (you can
see this in /var/log/messages if pppd is run with the debug option).
Hope this helps.

Hello. I've got that card and I had to download the commercial oss drivers.
Just go to www.4front-tech.com to download them. It should detect the card
when you install it. It only lets you use the drivers for 20 minutes in the
demo, though.

Hi all,
Crazy idea, but will VMWARE running on a linux Box with a guest OS of Windows9X,
be able to dial in with my WinModem and establish a PPP connection with my ISP.
Next Q: Can my Linux Environment then be able to see the network connection?
And YES, I know this is a TWEAKY solution around the winmodem problem, but
since I am considering VMWARE anyways, this might kill two birds with one stone.

This probably does belong in the group comp.os.linux.questions, but that isn't
very helpful. The answer you seek it this command: mount /mnt/cdrom If you
want anyone to be able to mount it, edit your /etc/fstab, find the line that
has /mnt/cdrom (or similar) and in the column that should have the work
defaults add a comma then user or users, i foget if it has an s or not. Type
man fstab, that will describe the file for you. Hope that helps.

Did you search at all? And it's not "XWindows", it's the X Window System...
BTW, it's the chipset that's important. A Google.com search for
"Maxi Gamer Phoenix" brought up a _Computer Shopper_ review that
implied it's a 3dfx Voodoo Banshee-based card, w/ a 250MHz RAMDAC.
Another search for "3dfx Linux Banshee" yielded a URL that may be of
use to you: http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/, which in turn
leads to http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS_vb_glibc.html, which
provides RPMs for a beta X server that includes Banshee support.
YMMV.

Hi Cyrus!
I don't know much about WinModems, but I think VMWare does not provide
the
the level of hardware access to the Guest OS you would need for this...
Windows9X simply wouldn't find the WinModem I guess...

Subject: Help, HP Ethernet card and RH 6.0
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 23:25:01 GMT
Hi all,
I just installed RH 6.0 on an HP Pavillion with an
HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 ethernet card. The card could not be identified
by the installation autoprobe, so I had to install with no networking.
Does anyone know how I can get this card configured?
Thanks a bunch, jim

Yes, it works fine now I have installed. However, /during/ the installation
it would only use the CD-RW (Secondary master) I tried putting the disc it
the CD-ROM but it said (IIRC) "Cannot mount /dev/hdc/" or something similar.
Anyway, the install went OK, so I'm not really worried.
Thanks,
Tim Martin.
