I'm still having problems with this blasted thing. For any one
interrested. I will give you full detail. As stated, this is a parallel
port zip drive (250) on it's own parallel port which I installed myself.
The port has no jumpers (shared IRQ) and is recognized when using Sin 98
(which is very seldom). I'm using Red Hat 6.0 but had no luck using 5.2,
5.1, or 5.0 ( I don't think I had this zip 250 with 5.0 and 5.1). Any
way, enough. Can any one help. I've had some good info but no luck so
far.
Thanks very much.

If you are looking for flash-memory disk devices, m-systems (www.m-sys.com)
make a number of devices, starting with the DiskOnChip2000 series, plus
versions which sit on an IDE cable.
We use a single-board computer board from ICP with a DiskOnChip2000 (8Mb)
for our linux based data acquisition and processing black boxes.
Otherwise, if you are after a solid state disk for speed,
I beleive Fujitsu did, and whatever the storage division of
DEC has become.

Don;t know if your BIOS will allow something to boot up from a program
on a cylinder number greater than 1023. If it does not, then you will
have to make sure that your / partition on Linux (or even just the /boot
partotion) lies at below 1024 cyl.

Date: 08 May 1999 17:45:08 PDT
Hi,
I upgraded my motherboard from an Abit to an Asus, and my cip from
an AMD -2 233 to an AMD -3 400. I have a Mylex SCSI card and a SCSI
cdrom. After upgrading, I couldn't read from the cdrom, and accessing
it tended to lock up my system. During boot up, the card would scan the
bus, find a cdrom, and stop - no error messages, requiring a reset to
start over. It turned out that by changing an option on my Mylex SCSI
card (BT 930), the power saving mode, I could mount and read the cdrom.
Why turning the power saving mode from on to off made a difference is a
mystery to me, but it worked, If anyone knows what this option does, or
why this worked, please let me know.

Actually, I could use some help too. I read the mini-HOW-TO on Ultra and
thanks to that and being a hack I was finally able to cludge things enough to
get Linux installed. I have slackware 3.6 which is kernal 2.0.35.
However, I would like to not have to do what I do now.. which is boot using
LILO from a floppy, and by switching ide channels.... most of which I don't
understand anyhow...
I cannot get any other way of booting to work. And I cannot make a bootdisk...
Putting LILO anywhere on hard disk does not boot.
The mini-howto talks only about the Ultra33 but says it is supported in this version
of the kernel. Well, it appears the Ultra66 is not? Does anyone know?
Is it supported in a later version of the kernel? or am I going to be forced to always
use a kludge.
This is a new computer. I would like things to work like they did with me old one,
which was LILO on MBR and select O/S at boot and go. Anyone help?
If you could email me in addition to posting I'd be grateful.
Thanks.

I print to a 1600CM over ethernet (in color yet). Just put the following
in your /etc/printcap. Change the IP address and name to suite your
needs. No Samba needed. You may have to create your spool directory
(:sd=) but you can usually re-use an existing one.

I recently built a machine that uses an FI 2013 motherboard (Apollo
chipset, Award BIOS) and an AMD K6-2/350. I did put in 128Mb of memory
(1 DIMM). The system is screaming and I'm very pleased with its
performance. There were some chipset/motherboard/CPU issues that I
researched before I selected the components. If you're interested email
me offline and I'll send you the URLs (I have to find them again).

I've a laptop with an 800x600 24bpp DSTN display, and I need an X
modeline. Where do I find that information, offhand? I've tried to
contact the laptop's manufacturer (Fujitsu), and they did not give me
any useful information. All I need is the XFree86 monitor settings or
a stable modeline for it.
With XF86config, two of the standard monitor settings work fine, but
the screen flickers. Adjusting with xvidtune, I can see what look
like moire patterns crossing the screen, from left to right and top to
bottom; it makes me think that the timings are set wrong and there's a
"wave" crossing the screen. I cannot get a satisfactory adjustment
with xvidtune; it would be better to have actual settings from a
hardware manufacturer or expert.
Is there a database where I can look that information up?

This box will run httpd, sendmail, radius and bind
So far we plan to set up:

Could you recommend:
- SCSI adaptor ?
- ethernet card ?
- hard drives (e.g. 2 x 9gig)

You can use the following link from Donald Beckers site to get 3c59x.c,
which you then use to recompile the kernel. He has added the "Hurricane"
series (Office Connect 10/100 NIC)...it worked perfect for me right out of
the box.
ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/test/3c59x.c
Just an FYI, I posted the same query over two months ago and got nowhere
until Donald responded with the above driver. Since then, a number of folks
have e-mailed me to query if I've found a solution. I've since lost those
e-mail addresses, so I'm hopeful that they see your post, this reply, and
get the fix implemented.
Last FYI, I'm using a 768 kbp/sec ADSL line and I get transfers in the
average 60-75 kb/sec range using RH5.2 and this NIC with Donald Beckers
driver. That's a good 20% better on average than I get with Win98/NT, so
there are zero performance issues.

I suggest that you either a) put your 18gb as the slave, or b) use 6mb
of the WD for Win98, use 2gb for the Linux "/" partition (your
motherboard does LBA, meaning everything up to cylinder 1024 can be
booted with LILO), then use the rest for other Linux partitions. A 128mb swap
on the second drive will make things quite speedy, but you may want to use the
rest of the second drive for windows.
With Red Hat Linux (but not with most other distributions) you can do this:
1. Red Hat "/boot" -- 4mb
2. Win98 -- 9gb
3. Red Hat "/" and other partitions: 9gb (more or less)
second drive: whatever.
Red Hat puts its kernels in the "/boot" partition. Most other distributions
dump them into the "/" partition, meaning that if your "/" lives up above
the 1024 cylinder boundary, you are SOL (Out of Luck).

No problem, I don't get insulted easy.
I was hoping to get some feedback on price.

The high priced items seem to be Win98 ($130), and the
assembly and test charge ($80.00)
Modem is also a bit high ($85.00 vs $50.00 for an A-Open)
I could delete the mouse and save $10.00 since I will be
moving my Kensington Expert Mouse over to the new system.

Just my $0.02 worth.
Hope this helps,

I'm running RH 5.2, and the only way I can get my Cable Modem to cooperate
after using it on Win98 is to power down (i.e. not just reboot), unplug the
cable modem for a second, plug it in and then restart the computer. I think the
Cable modem keeps track of the OS or the Computer's hardware address in RAM.
I do this whenever I switch from my desktop running Win98 to my laptop,
my Mac, or to Linux on the ethernet hub.
Pretty low-tech solution, but it works for me!

Subject: Modem Probem----HELP
Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 19:41:49 GMT
I am Running Linux Mandrake 5.3 with the KDE xwindows. I reloaded the
whole thing from scratch and after a day of reading HOW-TOs and scores
of news articles, I'm still stuck...
The modem connects fine to my ISP, but apparently doesn't route
correctly. No packets transfer and Netscape eventually returns
"server not found" message.
Could someone please help me with the entries in netcfg.
I went to http://nitro.med.uc.edu/DR3web/netcfg.html and did
everything he says to do and according to usernet I have a
functional PPP connection.
Any other Ideas?
Thanks
