Check the man page for the XSET command.....to enable DPMS power saving
with a 30 minute delay try :
'xset dpms 1800'

There are a bunch of other options though.....

Subject: Need Info On DEC Alpha with Linux
Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 21:34:39 GMT

Hi Linuxer,

I am interested in purchasing a DEC Alpha. This Alpha will be running
Linux.
The questions that I will be asking are:

1. Where can I purchase this DEC Alpha?
2. Is there a web browser for this DEC Alpha Linux, i.e. Netscape?
3. I have seen a recent released of Lyx. Does anyone know if this
Lyx is portable to DEC Alpha under Linux?
4. Is there a FREE accounting + ledger package for this DEC Alpha under
Linux?
5. Has anyone ported Octave to this DEC Alpha under Linux?

I certainly would appreciate if you could reply through e-mail. Thank you.

The 68-Pin Ultra2 is shielded from the other ones by a special chip, so
you could call it a different bus. The 68-Pin Wide and 50-Pin SCSI are
on the same bus, and termination can be set in bios. When you want to
use both of them, you should disable termination in bios.

: 2. I have used two of them and devices seems to use numbers on one bus

The scsi-id's on all three connectors should be unique.

: 3. There is also Adaptec AIC-3860 Chip on board. What is the function

This is the chip I mentioned earlier, it physically shields the ultra2
port from the other ones and swithes this connector to lvd/ultra2 or
uw mode depending on the connected devices.

: 4. Under linux it reports the channel speed is 40M/sec. I thought that
: with Ultra2 you should get 80M/sec speeds. I have following disks
: Seagate ST118273LW and IBM DNES-318350W. From the documentation of
: both they should be able to use 80M/sec speeds. Does the use of 50-Pin
: SCSI connector for CD-Rom slow the whole bus down? How do I meter the
: channel speed under Windows NT?

What kernel are you using, this behaviour should be fixed in 2.0.36,
or at least one of the newer aic7xxx drivers, mine reports 80M/sec
for a Quantum Viking II on the ultra2 connector.

: 5. What are the cable length limitations for Ultra2 bus?

I think differential can have twice the length opposed to uw.

Hi,

I am asked to come up with some specs for a company file-server (as
opposed to database server). The server is to hold user files, program
files and Oracle Developer runtime files. The OS is probably NT,
although we're making a point for Linux. About 250 users are going to
use the new box.

I have searched whatever sites I could think of for hardware specs, but
it doesn'y seem to be a big concern to Software and hardware vendors
alike.

Does anyone have a clue, a checklist, a ready-to-go specs sheet or a
useful link where I could find the info?

Thanks,

Teus van Lingen.

Martin, Since you seem to be one of the few if not the only one that has
sucessfully managed to setup one of these, how about posting a copy of your
/etc/isapnp.conf or whichever file you used to set the controller card up,
via isapnp I presume.

Do you have isapnp running at boot?
Have you compiled pnp support into your kernel?

Also, a copy of your MCONFIG as well as /usr/src/linux/.config (kernel
configuration file) wouldn't go amiss.

Thanks for your time,
(something this card has, so far, made me waste plenty of)

Hi,

I do have a T55D with a Matrox G200 running here. I use VesaFB
since the card itself is not supported. I recieved a code-fragment
from Matrox (70 kB of pure assembler :) which describes the correct
initialization of the DFP-Port of the card, but till now I did
not have a free minute to test it (or even to try to understand it :).

Maybe you have more luck with the ATI Rage LT since there exist
patched Xservers.

I have an Aureal Vortex PCI sound card that I cannot get up and running.
The card is supposed to be soundblaster pro compatible and I set it up as such
using make menuconfig but nothing seems to work. I used the addresses given by
the windows device manger and those addresses show up in the /dev/sndstat file
but there are just blank lines under the headings for sound card:, mixer:, etc.
Can anyone out there help with this?
Thanks in advance.

If your kernel has modulesupport and printersupport is compiled as
module insert this lines in /etc/conf.modules.

options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=auto
options lp parport=0
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

/dev/lp0 is your device for printing.
(change /etc/printcap)
Check the syslog what happen.

Hi Philippe,
You can solve the problem in two ways:
1) Via Suse patches from:
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub4/os/Linux/distributions/suse/suse_update/X/XBF/xi740/glibc2

I didnt try this yet but I beleive they should work with "sax".

2) Via RedHat patches and instructions. (I used their patches
        because I didn't find Suse's patches)
If you use RedHat patheches you will not be able
to use sax. However you will be able to use xf86config.

You can find the redhat patches at

After you did that I think you would like to try Wim Koomen answer to another
question here in order to get 1024x768 mode.

Are these *real* Redhat distributions, or are they the Macmillan
distributions like all the RH5.2 copies at Staples and Costco are?
The Macmillan distros require you to register with them instead of
Redhat for support (or so says the registration card included in the
box).

If support is of concern to you, you might want to double check.

I think that the ByteMark code will compile under most versions of
*nix, and would be one measure. There's also the lmbench stuff from
<http://www.bitmover.com/lmbench/> (which I believe is pretty standard for
Linux).

However, note that since you can't get direct access to the low-level
disk devices (not without doing some *real* shenanigans that require
kernel-level modifications), it's going to be hard to compare any
performance numbers you may get back with regards to the disk subsystem.

The same would be true of bonnie, and you have to try and make sure
that you make the test big enough so as to greatly exceed the amount of
physical RAM you have, so that buffer cache effects are minimized. This
gets harder and harder to do as your amount of memory grows, especially as
you get close to the built-in 1GB limit (you need to change some kernel
parameters and recompile if you want to make use of anything over 1GB).
