What error output are you getting?

Are you running telnet, ftp, and rlogin services on the laptop?

Why are you using these insecure protocols rather than ssh and scp?

Help! I followed the instructions to get the most recent tulip source code from
http://www.scyld.com/network/tulip.html

The make process gave an error message that it could not find cb_shim.o and also
could not run spec-helper (I could find /var/tmp/rpm.tmp.80186)

Somehow in trying to load a kernel driver module, something broke with XFree86
and I can't get any GUI to work!

I, too, have a Linksys Fast Ethernet 10/100 Model NC100 Version 2.0 and it works
under Win98. I also recently upgraded my dual-boot Mandrake 7.1 Gateway PII.

I'm stuck. Please help.

Subject: SuSe 6.4 network card problems
Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 22:31:28 -0500

I have only 1 disk that came with the Linksys card (LNE100TX). There is a
Linux directory on the diskette but it did NOT have the tulip driver in it.
I downloaded a tulip driver from the web and attempted to compile it. Once
compiled ( I don't think it is correct) I copied it to the directory and
done a "depmod -a" and it gave me "unresolved symbols in tulip.o".....I let
this slide by since I have been working on this for about 6 hours now and
done a modprobe tulip.o and it gave me: Can't locate module tulip.o

I used the following command line when compiling:

gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall -Wstrict-prototype
s -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] &&
echo -DMODVERSIONS`

I don't know what all that does as this is my first time to compile
anything. I went strictly by the instructions provided by someone in the
group (I think it was dkselich) that e-mailed me the directions for the
Linksys card configuration. I did not get it to work and now I am wondering
if I should take the net card back and get a different one..........

What am I missing here and what am I doing wrong??????? :-|

Thanks,
Dennis

(note, I'm in the compiler group, not the Linux group, so any answer is based
on my usage of Linux as a user, not as Redhat policy...).

I believe the telnetd is no longer started in the 6.1 or 6.2 time frame. If
you edit /etc/inetd.conf, you can probably see whether it is started or not.
You should have a line similar to:

telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

without the leading '#'.

Subject: Re: RamDisk Problem: System Hang During Linux Installation

I'm taking a stab at this here (seriously) but I really don't think you
want to disable the ramdisk, nor are you able to. The ramdisk is what the
kernel image is loaded in to (decompressed).

More than likely the reason for this error is because you only have 4 megs
of RAM. You dont' specify your distro but more than likely you are using a
newer one that needs at least 16 megs of RAM for installation. You will
either need to upgrade RAM or get another distro (such as an old version of
Slackware) that doesn't need a lot of RAM to install.

Hi,

I installed a Promise Ulta66 Controller on RH6.1+2.2.12 kernel. I can use it
after I past
  idex=0x...
as command line to the kernel.

The problem is the hard disk is quite slow. When I run

hdparm -d 1 /dev/hde

The operate is not permitted. I can not set the dma mode on. What's
problem? It seems somebody met with the same problem, but I can not find the
solution on the mail archives.

Thanks,

Installed Mandrake 7.1 several times today, and everything is working except
the sound card. My Xitel Storm Platinum is a Aureal Vortex 2 sound card,
but the card seems useless at this point... thanks to my Dual Celeron

Are there any newer Aureal Vortex drivers that support SMP? I got my USB

I downloaded and installed the binary Lucent WinModem driver from
http://www.linmodems.org. Folllowing the instructions, I started MINICOM
with the -b switch, and typed AT at the command screen to see if I could
get a response from the modem. and got none. So, I exited Linux and ran
Norton Diagnostics in DOS to determine which port the modem was using,
and it said COM3 (which is /dev/ttyS2 in Linux) 0x02e8 with an 8250
UART. So, I restarted Linux and ran setserial/dev/ttyS2 from a Linux
command prompt. The result was 0x03e8 IRQ 4 with an unknown UART. I
then ran setserial /dev/ttyS2 * port 0x02e8 * irq4 * uart 8250 from the
command prompt and got the following error message: Invalid Flag: 2

I am running SuSe Linux 6.3 on a 150MHZ Pentium with 48MB of RAM and 2
hard disks. I dual-boot Windows NT 4.0 and Linux. Linux is installed on
a 2.3 GB partition (with about 200MB free) on /dev/hdc5. Windows NT is
installed on a FAT partition on the other hard disk, /dev/hda1. This
partition is mounted as /WINNT.

xmcd is still not advancing track time. I rebooted to the original
RH6.2 kernel (2.2.14) thinking maybe it was a kernel issue (I had
upgraded to 2.2.16) but the problem persists.

I wonder if the issue is mwith my scsi card?

Shouldve also said, kernel version 2.2.9 and parport,parport_pc,imm drivirs
