SuSE is arguably the best distro for a newbie -- it's easy to install,
includes nice configuration tools, etc.
I use Debian and it kicks ass. I wouldn't recommend it for a complete newbie
though.

Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 23:46:54 GMT

I recently bought one of those network-in-a-box kits from Sohoware, and
Red Hat 5.2 does not recognize the card vendor, or I think include a
driver for the card.

The only markings on the chips seem to be "MX", the card is called an
"MX-A" under Windows.

Does anyone know of a driver for these cards available for Linux?

Thanks!

Hi Rod

I decided to go with a PII350 for some reason ... but actually it was
the board that swayed me - I want the RAM expansion which an Abit board
won't give me...I don't want to play around with overclocking because
I'm
not that experienced and would probably end up with a 3 sided case *g*

I'd go with the PII350 only because my intention is to have it
functional
by the time the PIII's are out - then the PII450's will be a lot
cheaper.
Between these groups, the 3dfx newsgroups, Tomshardware, alt. pc's
homebuilt
and Pricewatch I think I'm hanging over the edge *g* been playing a lot
of
Unreal lately.

Hi there

go lurk in the newsgroup for homebuilt pc's ... I think it's
alt.hardware.pc's-homebuilt or something like that, I'm in LINUX
now and that newsgroup is in my Agent in Windows. Do a Dejanews
search for building pc's and you should get the newsgroup name up.

Subject: Where to spend more money to speed up file server?
Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 17:27:02 GMT

I'm looking to set up a linux file server, primarily running samba
2.0, using s/w disk mirroring. My basic server would look like this:

* 2x Pentium II 350 MHz
* 256 MB 100 MHz ECC SDRAM
* 8 x 9 GB IBM Ultrastar 9ES disk drives, mirrored, on 4 ultrawide
  scsi channels or 2 ultrawide + 1 ultra2.
* A few 100 BaseT ethernet cards.

Possible upgrades (# means UK pounds, about US$1.6 FWIW):

+#200 400MHz Pentiums
+#400 450MHz Pentiums
+#300 (?) extra 256 MB RAM, 512 MB in total

Disk drive RPM Seek Transfer rate
+#0 Ultrastar 9ES 7200 7.5ms 108.6-171.1
+#520 Ultrastar 9LP 7200 6.5ms 92.2-179.2
+#800 Ultrastar 9LZX 10020 5.6ms 187.2-243.7

So, where, if anywhere, is it worth spending more money? I guess what
I'm asking is, in a linux server running samba and s/w disk mirroring
on multiple ethernet cards, is the limit in the disks, the CPU,
memory, memory bandwidth, or something more nebulous? And is there any
part of the above which is noticably weaker than the rest?

Any other comments?

Thanks a lot

John

When you say no sound, do you mean through your speakers or through
the audio out jack on the CD player? If you are not getting sound
through your speakers, it cound be numerous things. Your sound
module may not be loading if compiled as a module. Sound may
not be compiled in at all.

Do standard music CD's work with your present software and setup?

Subject: Terrible partitions problem

Hi again!

I have NT 4.0 on the first partition. I had before a second partitions
to
NT 4.0 which is now removed, I think its /dev/hda5 becaus the disk size
is
equal.

    /dev/hda1 Boot Primary DOS FAT16 [NO NAME ] 1539.57
    /dev/hda5 Logical DOS FAT16 (big)
535.50
    /dev/hda6 Logical Linux 941.07
    /dev/hda3 Primary Linux Swap 63.00

I use the procedure below to add this removed partition to linux.

In fdisk I delete /dev/hda5 with the "d" command, then create new linux
partition with "n" command. I choice logical type (becous I want use
this
space to applications) and where it's should start and where it's end
should be, I select the numbers of cylinders what fdisk recomended.
This partition should be exactly in middle of two another partitions.

When I entered p command I could notice that /dev/hda5 and /dev/hda6
changes
size so /dev/hda5 get the /dev/hda6 size and /dev/hda6 get the /dev/hda5
size.

After I done all this I use "w" command to save the new configuration.
Fdisk
recommende me to reboot, which I done. But now when my pc rebooting I
get the
following message:

[MS-DOS... something

I installed an IBM ISA Token Ring 16/4 card on my Compaq Deskpro
running the 2.0.36 kernel. When properly connected I haven't had any
problems talking to the network. The device driver I'm using is the
ibmtr.c
(version 1.3.57) that comes with the 2.0.36. My problem is that when
I'm not physically connected to the network my machine hangs during
the bootup procedure. Specifically, it hangs at rc.inet1. More
specifically,
I believe it hangs at the ifconfig command.

According to the Token Ring mini-HOWTO, I can avoid error messages,
when not connected to the network, by using a Token Ring loopback
connector. Does this apply also to my problem?

If a loopback connector is necessary, what is the pinage so I can build
one?

Is there an updated driver for my kernel version that would avoid this
problem all together?

Thanks in advance for any help...

They're also incredibly pointless and a big waste of space, considering

What's the matter with the <Receive serial link> having bit 7 set to 0?

Can someone shed some light on these topics? Help

I reccomend an EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card by Linksys.

It uses the tulip.c driver that comes with kernel 2.0.36 .

You can also download the driver from their website.

The card works very well on my system.

Thanks, but I had already done that. (BTW, very useful document,
I event forwarded it to a local users' group mailing list, since
it seems I'm not the only one having a hard time with sound cards)

Hmmm... You know what's worse? I also installed RH5.2 in two
other computers, these ones with Prosonic/Jazz 16 cards, with
the same results... So I think something else must be wrong/

Could someone please enlighten me?

NVidia actually provided the driver the xfree86.

I thought only 3.3.3.1 had the open source code. Anyway, I have a
Riva128zx (STB Velocity 128) and it works perfectly under 3.3.3.1 (no
video noise at all, at 1600x1200x32bpp) but it did not under 3.3.3 (lots
of video noise at higher resolutions and higher color depths).

3.3.3.1 supports NV1, NV3 and TNT (Riva128, Riva128zx, Riva TNT)

I am pretty sure they provided it

3.3.3.1 Doesn't.

I'm not sure this is obvious, but why not try Slackware?

I have two of these cards. They've worked real well for me. They use the
"via-rhine" drivers. Never kernels (2.0.36 I think, and definately
2.2.0-pre#) have support built in.

Installation was easy once I realized they didn't use the tulip drivers. (The
530 is a tulip compatible, the 530tx are via-rhine compatible)

Good Luck

You can try and manually try out several modules. Assuming default
installation,
they are located in /lib/modules/2.0.36-xxx/net.
use the modprobe command to try out several modules.
--modprobe eexpress.o. If it can't locate the card it gives an error.
try until you find the module that'll fit. Then insmod <modulename>
Check the files /etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/conf.modules.
Then use the ifconfig command to set IP adress and such and bring it up.
read the man page of ifconfig for this.
If you want to use the GUI configuration tool you may have to
give the right address and/or Irq when adding the card. Such as io=0x300 irq=11

(or whatever applies to your card)
