Hey Drew,
I'd suggest that you _do not_ buy Quantum ata/66. I could not
enable DMA mode for Quantum CR 4.3GB (on FIC's ata/33 motherboards:
VA-503+ and PA-2013). I guess this will be fixed sooner or later,
though... Other than that, the drive works alright (e.g. I can
boot from it).

Quantum EX ata/33 (I've got 6.4GB disk) works with DMA just fine
and reports lots of buffered reads (12MB/s).

Best,
a.

You need spd_vhi, like this:

setserial /dev/ttyS... spd_vhi

You _missed_ the list of AT commands. There are all those
fancy commands like

AT+MS=12,1,300,56000,0,0,33600

Actually, this is fairly strange that AT&F1 (did you try AT&F0 ??)
would not restore the optimal setting.
I'd know two ways around that (that is, if you do not want to find the
list of AT commands and to figure out what is needed):

1. In the Hyperterminal (under Windows), try to look up the INIt
string which Windows use, logging the connection to a file.
Try the link http://www.aopen-usa.com/tech/faq/modem/k56.htm
on how this can be done. (I do not have a Windows computer to check
whether this works; please post a follow-up if it does!!)

2. If for some reason this does not work, then in the same
Hyperterminal, after the modem is initialized, try AT&V
This would report the status of all S-registers of the modem,
and you can compare them with what you have in Linux...
But this would take some time..

Best,
a.

I downloaded XFree86.3.3.3.1 from the ftp site of Gatech and installed the
SVGA server. I just see something strange in the Xwindows. Maybe i will
follow your advice tommorrow. But I have a big problem now:

NT4.0 lost after Redhat 5.1.

I installed Redhat 5.1 on the free space of my 8.4 Western Digital
hardrive, which has a Windows 98 on Drive D and Windows NT4.0 on Drive E.
All these is under the control of System Commander Delux. I left a free
space around 1G when use Fdisk of Windows 98 to format my hardrive.
Then I intall the RH5.1.After I reboot, Linux is on the booting list of
System Commander automatically. However, it stoped at "L " when I choose
to use Linux.

I can boot from drive A and log into Linux using the rescue disk created
when install Redhat 5.1. But I failed to get Xwindows working for the sake
of my SpeedStar A50 card.

I quit Linux and tried to enter WinNT, I failed!!!
Error MSG:
Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
<winnt root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please Reinstal a copy of the above file

I also failed to enter VGA model. One more error line appear besides
above.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\winnt\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

I use System Commander to check for the partition.
multifat ----- partition 0 #this is my C:
extended ----- partition 1 #this has been devided as D-I
unix ----- partition 2 # it's the Linux partition
unix ----- partition 3 # it's the swap partition

Drive D ----- partition 1
Drive E partition 2
..
Drive I partition 6

So I am doubting if I should change partition(3) to partition(2) in the
boot.ini file of NT.( I tried, and failed).
What's the rdisk(0) means?
I really need your advice.
Thank you for you patient of reading this.

How does one measure _goodness_ of modems if they just _work_?

PS. Plus, modems above $100 suck.

1) You can use the Winchips with 240MHz with your 200MHz board. The
maximum CPU-clock is based on the possible jumpersettings, and the IDT
interpretes these settings different (uses a higher multiplicator).
This works only with IDT, since it's a single voltage chip and most older
MBs are also single voltage.

2) AFAIK for 240MHz there are two versions, the '2'-version is faster. For Linux,
MMX/3D-Now is irrelevant.

I've upgraded an old Acer MB (Phoenix BIOS, P90) to a Winchip 2 240MHz, no
problems with the BIOS or the board. Of course it's slower than a P2/K6 with
the same clock rate, but amp (MP3-player) now only needs 16% CPU instead of 50%
:-)

different.

Also, I don't think it installed the source files, I tried to recompile the
kernel but I got an error message. I was logged in as root and in the
/usr/src/linux directory. How do I recompile the kernel?

Dear Remco van den Berg,

A normal format will not fix head drifting and the like. Only a low-level
format will redo sector & track markings on the platter. This goes for IDE
as well.

These days though, IDE drives have incorporated their own logic to keep the
heads aligned.

If I have an old drive... This is usually the first step I do before
calling it quits and throw the drive away.

Thanks,
James Kosin

I think the problem is that your video timing (Modeline in the
XF86Config)
is very close to the Monitor's limits. This means your screen can
synchronize when you start from one mode but cannot when coming from
another. Try to find another Modeline.

Chris, I have a S1836DLUAN-GX. I have never had any negative experiences
with the board. When I did a fresh install of Windows 98, it automatically
detected everything perfectly and the system was up very quickly. Also,
I've kept Windows running, not just idle, but checking mail and playing
mp3's constantly at it's lowest CPU intensive times. Also, this Tyan board
is the best I've used. I build computers as a function of my job, computers
that are intended for internet servers and when I got my Tyan board, it
surprised me how well it performed. I will certainely buy from them again,
but not soon because the S1836 will work with Pentium III's and I just have
a Celeron 300 now so I have some good times with this board ahead.

Hi,

I've installed the CL beta driver on my Pentium 200Mhz running SuSE 6.0 with
kernel 2.2.5.
The drivers modules loads fine.
The mixer seems to work fine too (I've tested with xmix during a CD play)

When I try to play directly a sound file (.wav or .au), it sounds horrible
(I'm doing a "cat dummy.au > /dev/audio" for testing)
I cannot run x11amp either (no sound).

I saw in the messages log a "Oops" bug message in the "sblive.o" module (it
seems it's an access to a NULL pointer, but I forget to note it down...)

Somebody could use it without any problem ?

Did someone know if there is a chance that CL release the source code ?

Hi,
You can buy Dec Alpha machines with Linux direclty from Compaq
(www.digital.com). When you get the Linux you will get most of the software
like Accounting package, .. lynx. if at all you don't get it , you can compile
then on your machine. the octave is dirstributed in source code also.

: using the `dump' program. The problem is that a tape is full after
: only about 40 MB have been written to it! I tried out the `d' switch
: to pass the bit density to `dump' (342 MBit / inch for DDS-3), but it
: tells me that this setting is invalid. The command line (without specifying
: the bit density) looks like this:
:
: salomon:~ # dump 0uf /dev/st0 /usr
: DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Tue May 11 10:14:59 1999
: DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
: DUMP: Dumping /dev/hda9 (/usr) to /dev/st0
: DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
: DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
: DUMP: estimated 561213 tape blocks on 14.43 tape(s).
: ^^^^^ this is about 40 MB / tape!
:
: salomon:~ # df -k
: Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
: ...
: /dev/hda9 606846 515540 59959 90% /usr
: ...
:
: Any help is greatly appreciated!!

You can use the `B' switch to tell it how much the tape can hold.

Cheers,
Rob Komar

Where do you place Lilo? If in the master boot record, it should be
read and executed every time you reset/power on the system.

If, on the other hand, Lilo is in the boot sector of some partition,
then it will be read only when the partition is active at boottime.
Which seems to be tha case here.
