You need to search the web for AVA1502 and LINUX. There is a page out
there dedicated to getting it running. I was going to, but got a
different card.

I am having a similar problem...but I am only at the install stage. I would
like to install Red Hat 6.0 on my system with the following IDE drive
configuration:
1. Primary Master hard drive (Quantum 12Gig Big Foot TX)
2. Primary Slave Toshiba CD-ROM
3. Secondary Master LS120 ultra high density floppy
4. Secondary Slave Quantum 2.5 Gig hard drive

I can boot from the CD-ROM and start installation, but the druid can only
see the first hard drive. Same for fdisk from the CD-ROM.

Do I need to configure the system so that the hard drives are both masters?
Anyone know the ins and outs of configuring a system like this?

Many thanks,

I am also trying to get a UMAX 1220S to work, and I have a Tekram DC390 in
my system.
Michael Meissner wrote about a DB50 to DB25 cable. Is this an official

I asked several shops but nobody knows something about such a cable.
What is the solution ??????????

WordPerfect 8 might run OK on that machine with judicious choice of window
manager (no GNOME or KDE). Note that the free version of WP8 is not the
full version.

But frankly I don't think this is realistic hardware (I've never used X on
anything less than a 486/66 with 32MB RAM.). The above machine would
be a good X terminal, though.

Linux runs well on 486s, but not, unfortunately, when they are encumbered by
lots of fat GUI office software.

I suggest a Pentium class machine with 64MB RAM for "modern" (i.e. bloated)
office software.

Star Office may do OK on a Pentium with LOTS of RAM.

The other issue is HD space. I think you're going to have a hard time
squeezing what you need into 400MB.

>spreadsheet, email, web browsing, and callandering.
>- apps not dead (ie: old versions with no future or new development)

I wouldn't want to run Netscape 4.x in anything under 32MB RAM. And I haven't
tried to run it on a 486. I'd probably want to back off to Netscape 3, but
that's not being maintained.

Hello, I'm hoping someone can quickly explain how I can get past this
problem I'm having with getting my SB Live running.

When I do "insmod emu10k1", I get the following message:

root@cosmo2k:/home/darren > insmod emu10k1
Using /lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/emu10k1.o
/lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/emu10k1.o: kernel-module version mismatch
        /lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/emu10k1.o was compiled for kernel
version 2.2.5-15
while this kernel is version 2.2.5.

I'm running kernal 2.2.7. Do I need to install 2.2.5 or is there a way
aroung that?

There's a kernel patch. They've been discussing (on the developers' list)
what other options are available, because they don't want to require people
to rebuild the kernel when installing the software, but I don't think
they've hit one anything yet.

I am using A Macronix MX987xx series 10/100 card at the moment (Tulip
chipset) and it works like a dream. You might check the websote of your
linux distro and see if they have a hardware listing of supported cards. In
general the 3Com card will be supported but they tend to be expensive.

Your information is a little sketchy. Was the BIOS set to auto or were
drive specifications set in the CMOS? Were you using any overlay program
either for both drives or the large one? Did the large drive have a
primary
partition specified or was it all extended? Even if it had a primary
partition
was it set active? Did you try booting from a floppy and then see if you
could
find the drive? Could you have bumped something else? Is there power to
the
drive(s)? Does either drive have different settings for primary and
primary
with slave present??

Hello,

Like other's Toshiba i think the best way is to install win$98 , setup
de infrared port (control panel-> system -> show devices by conection->
thoshiba SIR->properties->default config 2-> ok-> do the same again to
config 1 (so it can save the configuration) take note of the values...
instal Linux over win$ put the values On the necessarie configuration
files...

hope it helps..

I've never used the orbs, but with IOMEGA you must mount /dev/hdc4 (Whatever
the device is -- partition 4) otherwise it won't work....

I do have an orb I've been evaluating...very nice, but the feel a little
cheap. I definately do not like the parallel drive. I think mine is
defective, and I've not been able to get a tech support call in successfully

download the emu10k1 driver. Untar it and read the docs. There are

Hi All,

using Linux Mandrake 6.0

I've got Aztech PCI 338-3D ...

Ran redhat sndconfig but my card is not there. tried to set up
soundblaster from the list provided in there but no success.

Now actually I've got 2 problems.
1) during the boot I'm getting failure messages when the system tries to
initialize soubdblaster.
How do I remove those annoying failure mesasges? hod do I tell the
system that I don't have soundcard? where does the system store the current
soundcard info? I've tried to find the file that is referring to sb.o but
couldn't :((( what am I doing wrong?

2) Well, I still would love to have sound working :)))

Is there a driver for this card? Couldn't find anything in ALISA &

that can be configured easily & there's a driver for it?)

I had the same problem here. Try to included both
drives into your bios setup. I had a secondary
drive that was not included in the cmos settings
and it had trouble while accessing it with dma.
After putting the drive to cmos all went fine. I
you read the Ultra-DMA howto you will find some
information that linux need the bios to setup the

Hi,

ARRGH. A while ago, I bought the OSS soundcard drivers with the Maestro
add-on for my laptop. Works like a charm (actually it doesn't; it kept
conflicting with my PCMCIA network adapter until I told both of them which
IRQ to use, and it still sometimes simply hangs the computer upon playing
the first sound since bootup; only power off wakes it).

The only real and recreatable problem remaining is that the computer hangs
upon waking from suspend mode (suspend-to-RAM) if and only if a sound has
been played since the last bootup. I.e.:

        $OSSPATH/soundon
        apm -s
=> works, but

        $OSSPATH/soundon
        $OSSPATH/play somesound
        apm -s
=> hangs when waking up.

Has anybody seen this problem before? It's really annoying, as it makes my
box much less usable (or OSS completely unusable).

TIA,
