I had exactly the same problems with this card using it in a Toshiba Tecra
740 CDT. On a Siemens Mobile 800, however, the modem and the network part
of this card worked without any problems!?

(Linux distribution was the german DLD-6.01, kernel 2.2.3)

Hi all,

What would be the cheapest scanner I could get to work under Linux, in
your opinion?
Quality isn't too important (color is needed though, b&w won't do).

Do I have any chance in getting one of the parallel port ones working
(USB surely not?),
or do I need SCSI?

Thanks in advance,

Hi everyone,
I would like to know if the Olivetti JP 190 printer can be used with Linux
softwares, I have not yet bought it & the salesman says that it works with
Dos as well as Windows. He supposes that it also works with Linux. I have
been reading in Linux newsgroups that hardware that are said to be made
specifically for Windows don`t work with Linux. So I am not sure if this
will work with Linux. I have bought a Redhat 5.2 along with a computer
magazine, but I have not yet installed it on my computer. So I don`t want to
make a mistake by buying some hardware that don`t work with Linux as I
intend to use the Linux OS later. What additionally makes this printer
interesting is that with it one can make transfers of any picture you want
if you use the proper paper. Thanks in advance to any one who can help me.

Subject: network problems

Hello
I have an old VESA based 486/100 I would like to use
as a firewall. The local cable guy is adamit that this will not
work. He is positive that the 486 machine will not service
the cable modem fast enough. Does anyone out there have any
experience with this? I have installed RedHat 5.2 & it works fine.
Works fine with solaris 2.6 also.

Also. that same machine presently has a 3c509B NIC as does
my new spiffy box. I have tried to connect these through a dlink
hubby. I am having problems.

I set the software up and the hub lights up the line lights
on the correct lines. Does this mean they (both ends of the ether
net cable) are both talking 10 base T?

        I can ping localhost fine.
I can ping the same ip number (say 192.168.0.1) fine.
I cannot ping to the other machine - either way. %100 failure.
Any Ideas?

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

I solved this problem with the help of a patched apmd that allows you to
specify pre and post-suspend commands. I use this to completely stop and
eject the card on a suspend event, and then start the PCMCIA system on a
restore event.

Unfortunately I have forgotten where I picked up the patched sources,
although if you want them I can mail them to you (only 26K).

Here is my apmd init script, which will give you an idea of how it
works. After much tweaking, this is the combo I found works pretty much
every time. It is lovely not having to shut down the notebook ;-)

Hope this helps.

/etc/rc.d/init.d/apmd:

#!/bin/bash

rm -f /var/run/apmd.pid

/usr/sbin/apmd -s '/etc/pcmcia/network stop eth0 ; sleep 2;
/sbin/cardctl eject 0 ; /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia stop' \
               -r 'sleep 10 ; /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start'&

I have only this modem using serial ports. My mouse is a PS/2 mouse.
The modem documentation specifically mentions that COM2 is the recommended
port to connect to under Windows, for reasons beyond my guess!
The motherboard I'm using is an Intel one with built in sound card. Could
that be the reason?
Anyway, I have not tried to configure the sound card, and Linux did not
detect it while installation.

That sounds about right. When I took the case off and started swapping
drives around to isolate the problem, I noticed the culprit was making a
clicking noise it hadn't made before that sounded like something was loose
or not tracking right.

In tracking it down, I noticed that having it on the drive cable would
prevent other drives on the system from being detected properly in BIOS or
at startup. I think it had one foot in the drain and another on a banana
peel...

Thanks,

Most all 3Com NIC's work with Linux fine... as well do most modem's as

you on Red Hat just the same, but Look at the SuSE HW Database to see what

hardware you can run on Linux... Your kernel has a LOT to do with this as
well...

Using RedHat 5.2.

Motherboard AMI BIOS's Advanced tab has Plug and Play Configuration
settings.

Choices are...

Configuration Mode...Use Setup Utility (in which case IRQ's 3,5,9,10,11,12
are marked Available and can be changed).

OR

Configuration Mode...Use ICU (in which case Boot With PnP OS options
are...None, Other, and Windoze95)

So far, I have set these to Use ICU and PnP OS...Other.
It seems to work OK, but I'm wondering if another combo would be better
advised. Any replies are appreciated.

Oh yes really ?

My config :
- CDWriter: HP SureStore 3020
- SCSI Card: Adapted 1520
- Linux RedHat 5.1
- 32Mb RAM

With this I can do simultaneously :
- run X11
- run netscape
- run LyX (Latex FrontEnd)
- burn CD (while getting some mail from server e.g., or writing with
LyX,
or even compile a LaTeX document ! yes !).

Subject: Slow drive
Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 16:59:01 +0100

I have SuSE Linux 6.0 (Kernel 2.2.3) installed on a Compal P-120 laptop,
with 24MB of ram. This laptop uses the CMD 640 chipset (yes, I know!) and a
Toshiba MK4310 MAT 4.3G drive. This is a triple boot system with Win 98,
OS/2 and Linux, all controlled from OS/2 boot manager.

I know its not a state of the art system, but it trundles along quite
happily under Windoze and OS/2. Linux however, is unbelievably slow - would
you believe over 7 minutes to open Star Office? OS/2 manages it in about 30
secs!

The problem seems to be drive related. Although the Toshiba claim the drive
has 128K of cache, Linux reports 0K cache on boot up! Both OS/2 and Windows
seem to think the cache is there, but Linux doesn't!

I have performed some benchmark tests under each system and come up with
some interesting results. Although the tests aren't measuring precisely the
same things, they do indicate a problem:

Windows reports a transfer speed of 12.1 MB/sec cached and 1.6 MB/sec
uncached.
OS/2 reports a bus/cache transfer speed of 3.2 MB/sec, and an average
transfer speed of 1.6 MB/sec.

Under Linux, hdparm -tT reports cache transfers of 12 MB/sec, and a buffered
disk transfer rate of 0.16 MB/sec. That is NOT a misprint - it really is
0.16 MB/sec!

This is probably why the system seems so slow! The question is, how do I
cure it? I'm a relative newcomer to Linux, but so far I've managed to get
everything I need from the documentation. This one has me stumped!

Anyone got any suggestions?

GH> It ought to be 4-5 megs a second, maybe more with some fine-tuning.

GH> So, how *does* one go about making DMA work on this card and driver?

I have to assume it is, top says, while hdparm -t /dev//sda is running,
that the cpu useage is a max of 2.7%, while its reading that 32 megs of
data, at rates from 0.81 to 1.54 megs/second.

The drive has just been replaced with one that I know can do 7
megs/second on another m68k system architecture. No change in effective
speed. Modprobe indicates there should be a DMA_SPEED option as the 4th
option on the cli that loads the driver, but so far, all I get are
errors from modprobe if I attempt to give it anything more than just the
name of the driver, aha1542, as argument. This is true even if I do
nothing but duplicate the 0x230,10,7 which are its default address, IRQ,
and hostnumber.

Ideas anyone? Having supposedly quick scsi stuffs running at 10% of the
IDE tells me something is basicly wrong, even if it works flawlessly
otherwise.
