I'm the principal author of "that old HOWTO". If you find it "awfully
complicated", I'd be happy to receive your comments. Please write to me;
my address isn't "munged".

You say that the Hard Disk Upgrade Mini How-To "is not included in the
recent distros". I haven't checked every distribution, but it is
included in Red Hat 7.0, for example.

Have you got a file ~/.xinitrc? Try:

/path/to/xinerama &

I can't confirm this one. I had a short, 1.5 seconds, power outage day
before yesterday, while the default boot was a 2.4.2pre4 kernel. Other
than a heck of a time fscking the drives as I was doing a backup at the
time, I had no trouble with repeated reboots to that kernel that were
required to repair the damaged /usr partition. I did wind up with about
40 entries in Lost + Found though :(

I've since plugged my ups in to bring it up to float, and since this is
the power failure season here, that 200 lb monster IS coming back into
the house... Its rated at 2000VA, no wimpy stuff allowed here. :)

Cheers, Gene

xinerama isn't a separate application that you can run like this, it is
an option of the X server. I don't know how to tell xdm to use this
option automatically, but adding the following line in your
$HOME/.bashrc file should start X correctly when using startx :
alias startx startx -- +xinerama

Hi!

I thought that the lsmod showing the sr_mod and scsi_mod loaded and the
dmesg "hdc=ide-scsi hdb=ide-scsi ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi ide_setup:
hdb=ide-scsi "-part was confirmation of this.
But I'm far from a /dev-guru, so I don't know.
How can I confirm this for real?

I could of cource make my own kernel, but if it won't fix this problem I
thought it better to make a fresh install (but that feels a bit
windowzy...).

As a CDROM drive it works just nice. As a burner, it is not supported
(special features such as Just Link). cdrecord does support most of
the drive, but cdrecord is somewhat limitet itself and requires the
cdrw drive to be installed as a scsi device (I did that).

I am using wine to run Nero (windows cd burning software) and this
lets me have use the Just Link feature which is very nice on a
multiuser machine...

Burning over nfs gives me up to about 60 buffer underruns with no
noticable problems.

Multisession cd's (or maybe track at once) burning with Nero does not
work, though (lead-out is not written, but using WinOnCD (again with
wine), it is possible to write the lead-out).

My problem is that the linux cdrom driver apparently doesn't
understand multisession cd's and always mounts the first session. This
is quite annoying.

Hello Peter!

Attempt edit follows per hand.
When your Input-Device in the XF86Config is a /dev/mouse, you must
create a symlink from /dev/mouse to the port where is connectet your mouse
in the /dev Directory.
Example: ln -s /dev/ttyS3 /dev/mouse (ttyS3 are com4)then you must have a
@mouse in the /dev Directory.
restart the X-Server and i hope its run.

Udo

Of Course it does but I need to keep the CdDROM and CD Burner on
seperate Channels for reason I don't want to go into
here. The HDs are not the only issue.

That is already my plan. but it still leaves me a slot short AND I canot
successfully execute it until I have an IDE controller I trust. Hence I
will ask again for a recomendation for Linux compatable IDE Controllers

Well maybe because for people running 98 or 95 SIIG works great. All I

For winmodems your starting point should be www.linmodems.org and the
mailing list archives there

For your HCF Modem try www.olitec.com/linux.html.

Be sure that your BIOS assigns interrupt/io-memory by checking the dmesg
after ./ins_all. If IRQ 0 is found, change the PnP Bios setting. Is
inserting was successfull, check that the script created the right device.
The majors of /dev/cnxt0 and the cnxt device from /proc/devices must match.

Sure, as the cua* devices are non-blocking ports. But the whole
concept of blocking vs. non-blocking devices was broken from the
very beginnings. Nowadays, there's no need for cua* devices anymore,
and new releases shouldn't even create them anymore.

Becaue your problems are not the result of using ttyS* devices
but the result of improper or sloppy handling of the relevant
options and/or programs that access the port(s). Using cua*
devices just for the simple reason that you're either too lazy or
not interested to find out what's going wrong isn't a very good
argument at all.

Unfortunately though, cua* is still needed for a variety of legacy reasons.
For an example, try using something like chat within a shell script reliably
without using cua*![1]
