Just got a piece of win hardware that I had to return.

Of all blanking things a US Robotics modem. (model number 5687)

Now my nephew and I checked out the box and figured "if it has jumpers then
it should be ok" cuz then the modem will handle the set up, NOT the
software.

So I buy it and I take it out of the box. I notice that it looks different
then the picture. I figure it's no big deal and threw it in.

Worked quite awesomely under windows. So I think "aw cool I have a modem
that'll work under linux again" (gave my old 28.8 modem to my sister after
I got an el-cheapo 56k modem from an ebay auction, big mistake)

Well I boot into linux. I try EVERY SINGLE MODEM UTILITY I HAVE, nothing.
So I figure "ok then I used to have it set up with a dialin script, no
biggie I'll just make a new one (thank you linux for dummies). No go.

Finally I read the newsgroups for a while and find a compatibility list for
modems. (thank you whoever posted that in whatever newsgroup).

I find the modem I just bought. "Yes the 5687 is compatible, so long as
it's not a 5687-02" So I check the box, guess what kind of modem it is.
Yup a 5687-02

I was so pissed. but at least I knew it wasn't me, it was the modem.

So I immediatly throw it back in the box (keeping the 20.00 rebate
information thank you) and bring it back to Wal-Mart.

After about a half hour of trying I got my refund, they didn't want to take
it back cuz it was opened. But the nicer of the customer service reps
managed to do it. The other one though was kinda snotty and was all like
"Next time make damn sure that you buy compatible hardware"

So now I've resorted to finding a place to mail order a new modem.

Anyone have any recommendations on a good one? :-)

Ok, I have a Mustek 600 II CD scanner. It's a SCSI scanner (supposedly)
using the included interface.

Does anyone know #1 will the included interface work or at least #2 a good
(cheap) interface to buy that would work AND #3 if I put on a compatible
interface would I be able to make the scanner work.

I haven't really tried to make it work under linux yet. I just figured I'd
see if anyone knew before I ended up frusterated. (and possibly throwing

Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 17:30:28 +0200

Ok I have following problem:
I was running RH 5.1 for quiet a while and I could use my AWE 32 after
having configured it with sndconfig just perfectly. Then I installed Redhat
5.2 and all of the sudden my AWE would freeze my system copmletely when
playing an Mp3 file on x11amp. Well I beared with it, and I waited for RH
6.0 to come out (I tried different things in the meantime of course, like
recompiling the kernel I read all the howto's concerning kernel rebuilding,
and soundblaster awe support) Well then I installed RH 6.0 and sound worked.
Then I thought I might recompile my kernel to save some memory and now my
system freezes up again when I play an Mp3 on x11amp.

Now, could anybody tell me what the heck I am supposed to do ????? I looked
at possible ressource conflicts in the different /proc files. I must have
done something wrong in the kernel rebuild, could somebody PLEASE help me! I
would want to switch to linux completely but I can't unless I have my
Mp3's !!! It would be also helpful if I'd receive a config file of the
default kernel that's included in the dist.

Thanx for any reply

Ya got me. Doesn't make sense to me either. A PS/2 mouse normally uses
IRQ 12, so it shouldn't conflict with either serial port.

I've been using external modems at various speeds on COM1 for over 5
years now with DOS, OS/2, Win 3.1, Win95, WinNT and Linux, and haven't
had a problem with any of them

If you've got an old serial interface with 8250 UART chips, you may have
serious problems running the port faster than 9600bps, but you'd need a
really old system to have that problem today. Every Pentium-or-better
motherboard with built-in serial ports I've ever seen has 16550AFN (or
compatible) serial ports, which are reliable at 115200bps (where most
56K modems like to run at.)

> The motherboard I'm using is an Intel one with built in sound
> card. Could that be the reason?

You'll have to find out what interrupts and ports the sound card is
using. If it's a clone of the Creative Labs SoundBlaster, the factory
defaults will be:

        Digital Sound I/O port: 0x0220 - 0x022F
        MIDI UART I/O port: 0x0330 - 0x0331
        FM Synthessi I/O port: 0x0388 - 0x038B
        Low-DMA channel: 1
        High-DMA channel: 5
        IRQ: 7

You will want to make sure to change the IRQ to something else, since 7
is used by your printer interface. This IRQ sharing works OK under DOS
and Windows only because those platforms don't normally use the IRQ when
printing to the parallel port.

The standard resources used by serial ports (so you can check for
conflicts) are:

        COM1: port 0x03F8-0x03FF, IRQ 4
        COM2: port 0x02F8-0x02FF, IRQ 3

There are no official standard assignments for COM3 and COM4, but these
are often used:

        COM3: port 0x03E8-0x03EF, IRQ 4
        COM4: port 0x02E8-0x02EF, IRQ 3

Note, that these definitions cause conflicts between COM1/COM3 and
between COM2/COM4. This can cause problems. Making sure that you use
other IRQs for the extra ports will prevent those problems.

Linux is based on the chipset, not the model. You need to find out what
chipset this card is based on. It may be under a Novell sticker, which
means you can use the NE2000/PCI driver. The answer to your question, as
it is to many, is that we need more information. :-)

I've seen this when the SCSI cables are too long.

Your 2940AU is an Ultra- but not Ultra-Wide controller, right? If you
have Ultra-SCSI devices attached to it, then the total amount of cables
on the SCSI bus (internal, external, and whatever's inside the external
devices themselves) must be 3m (approx. 118 inches) or less. In
general, it's easy to go over this limit if you have both an internal
and an external device attached at once.

If you can get or make shorter cables, to get the total length below the
3m limit, you may see the problem go away.

If the cables are short enough already (did you remember the cabling
inside the DAT drive itself? There's usually between 4 and 8 inches
inside most devices. Check your termination. Active termination is an
absolute requirement with Ultra-SCSI.

Make sure the card's built-in termination is turned off while you have
both internal and external devices attached. Terminating the bus
anywhere other than the ends of the cables can cause problems. If the
card is set for automatic termination, override that and manually set it
to none - sometimes the auto-termination logic doesn't work right.

Not bloody likely. Such modems will not work without specially-written
device drivers. AFAIK, nobody's ever written a Linux driver for them.
Given the proprietary nature of these chipsets, it's not likely one will
be written unless the modem maker decides to do it himself.

This is what Lexmark says about their printers' support for Linux:

TSCInkjet1@LEXMARK

Currently our only inkjet printers that will work with Linux are the Optra
Color 40 and Optra Color 45, which have PCL5 and PostScript level 2. We do
not provide drivers for Linux, but you can use a compatible driver. Because
of this, support for Linux with these printers is limited. The Lexmark
3000, and the Lexmark 1020 Business Edition have PCL3 and can also be made
to work with Linux.

The Winwriter 150c, Lexmark 1000, Lexmark 1100, Lexmark 2030, Lexmark 2050,
Lexmark 2055, Lexmark 2070, Lexmark 3200, Lexmark 5000, Lexmark 5700,
Lexmark 7000, and Lexmark 7200 are host based printers that were developed
for Windows 3.1x and Windows 9x. We appreciate your comments and customer

Subject: Re: #BR on SMPs on LX

The Celerons and newer PII/PIIIs do not use the MB jumpers for setting
the multiplier. The chip itself provides this. There are a number of
adapters that have the SMP jumper and voltage selection. Most also have
a jumper to mask B21 (auto detect FSB) to run a 66mhz chip at 100mhz -
but this only works for the 300As (or a 333 if you are very lucky).
There can be bios problems recognizing higher clock speed Celerons on
many LX chipset boards. Most BX chipset boards have the bios support
already.

The two best SMP adapters are:
MSI MS6905 v1.1
Asus adapter v1.5

I'm still a bit of a Linux newbie, so I'll not address this
one. I'm pretty *certain* that you can do it though, I've
heard many times of the 2 of them co-existing on the same
HD. As a matter of fact, I'm planning on doing the same
thing this week...

> Also, how would I remove LILO from NT,
> as it does not appear to have an fdisk command
> (so I could not say fdisk/mbr).

*This* I can help you with. (I'm assuming that you don't
have the boot/install floppies that came with the OS.)
First, before you do the Linux install, gather 3 blank 1.44
Mb floppies. Once you have them, go to Start/Run & type in
'winnt32 /ox' (no quotes). This will re-create those
floppies, which will allow you to boot from the 1st disk.
At this point, you'll want to have another blank disk (we'll
call it disk 4), so that you can back up your current info -
go to Start/Run & type in 'rdisk /s' (again, no quotes).

Once you have all of these floppies created, you can go
ahead & install Linux, as your current configuration info
will have been saved.

You can perform these steps if you decide to remove LILO
from the boot sector. After you boot from floppy 1, it'll
then prompt you to load the 2nd disk, at which point you're
offered a menu. Choose 'R' for repair. It'll then prompt
you to insert the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD, aka disk 4),
do so. It should then try to read a file called REPAIR.INF.

When this happens, you'll get a menu, use the up & down
arrows & the 'Enter' keys to deselect all but 'Verify Boot
Files'. You should then be able to continue with the
process & have it restore your boot sector to it's
'pre-Linux' configuration.

I would be rather remiss if I did not suggest that you also
copy essential files such as network & video drivers prior
to beginning this process.

> I inherited a PC with NT on it,
> and would like to keep it if possible.
>

Well, it's not as simple as fdisk /mbr, but it's not *too*
bad.

(Note to all the Linux purists out there: Sorry for the
"mostly M$" content of this note - I wouldn't even *know*
this stuff if my company hadn't decreed that all IS staff
must get their M$ certification...)

fixed the problem ;-)

for reference, try this on a redhat 5.2 or mandrake 5.x system:

in /etc/conf.modules, put:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7

then reboot.

that might do the trick. assuming you have built the kernel with
parallel port options, etc.

: help!

Subject: Printer Setup (NEC Superscript 870)
Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 14:00:28 -0700

Hi,

Has anyone set up the printer for NEC Superscript 870?

I'm using SuSE Linux 6.1. The spooling system seems to be running
okay, but I don't know how to set it up so that it can print various
different file formats.

The only file that seems to be printing okay is when I do this:

cat text-file > /dev/lp0

Maybe it's my printcap file is not set up correctly. I am using
laser Jet II P for printer type because I saw on my printer manual that
it is compatible with ljet2p, but it didn't work!

Can someone help me please.

BTW, I'm new to Linux. I just got it for a month. Is anyone using
SuSE Linux instead of Red Hat. Which distribution is better. The
reason I chose SuSe is that it seems to have everything you need
in one package instead of Red Hat which package its stuff in various different
product to get you to buy more stuff from them.

Thanks in Advance
Hing ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Please reply directly via email.

Not for a web site but heres the content of the response. Sorry I didn't
mean to be rude but had to remember to boot the OS2 side to find it the
next time I shutdown.
Sorry.

Its not publicly available yet, I'm afraid. There will be announcements
on the
video4linux list and the quickcam-drivers list.

Cheers,

Dale.
