I't not about RH or not RH, it's about kernel option for SMP. As
long as your kernel is compiled with SMP support, adding a second
(third or fourth) CPU requires no changes to anything.

So if you upgrade a kernel, make sure you compile it with SMP
support.

To summarise what I think I've learned from this thread:

Build the box with 2 x Promise Ultra-33 cards and perform software RAID
(vinum in FreeBSD) or (md in Linux).

Sounds good to me :-) Just going to find a case now that will hold 8 ATA
drives plus CD plus floopy ;)

Thanks all.

Hello all,
I have an opportunity to purchase the above for a very reasonable
price. Since it is SCSI there <should> ;-> be no problems with it
working with Linux. Has anyone heard anything to the contrary? If so
please let me know ASAP, since I'm bidding on it at onsale.com. Thanks
in advance for your assistance.

Subject: PCI-slots: plug and play ??
Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 11:15:40 +0200

I have 3 pci-cards (SCSI, video, NIC) and one ISA-card (second parallel
port).
I can set my BIOS to :
- set IRQ, etc. manually
- use PNP OS (Win9x)
- use PNP OS (other PNP OS) (* choosen by me)
Depending on wich slots I use for the different cards:
- the pc doesn't power on
- the pc gets power, but doesn't see a screen
- pc power and screen, but no boot-device
- pc power and screen and disk, but NIC doesn't work
- pc power and screen and disk and NIC, but Linux crashes while printing

Can anyone tell how to plug so that it will play?
Can I do something in Linux (SuSE 5.3, standard installation,
nothing compiled by me) to correct the problem?

Any help is incredibly appreciated.

Subject: Problems with TV card
Date: 01 Jun 1999 11:07:00 +0200

Hi !

I'm using kernel 2.2.9, bttv 0.63 & xawtv 2.45. I have a Typhoon TVPCI
Tuner card with a BT848 chip (Rev. 18) and a TEMIC Tuner. In FreeBSD
it told me that it's a NTSC tuner, so I had to switch manually to
PAL to watch TV (we use PAL instead of NTSC) and it worked.

In linux I tried to switch to PAL, but when I'm trying to do this I
only get a scrambled picture which is cut in 4 small parts. When I'm
clicking on the NTSC button I almost get a standing picture in b/w
and very dark but only when I maxmimize the window.

What's the problem here ? I really don't know what to do. I tried
all tuners in the tuner.o module but none of them worked.

Can anyone help me ?

Thanx & Bye,
                Udo

Hi,

Programs such as 'mkisofs' (file system/image generation) and 'cdrecord'
(image burning) are available for Linux. If you search on
http://www.freshmeat.net, you may find frontend-style programs for
mkisofs and cdrecord to make the otherwise commandline-driven process
more graphical in nature.

Hello all. I am having a problem with a printer problem. I am running
Red Hat 5.2 (no updates) and when I print to a parallel printer (lp1)
the printer prints a few lines, then pauses, prints again, pauses, etc
until the print job has finished. Now it prints random amounts of lines
and also pauses for a random amount of time. Has anyone had this
problem before and if so what caused the same problem. Or can someone
help me understand what is causing it or how to diagnose the problem
further. When I print I use the following command :
    l /dev > /dev/lp1
My printer is a Star ZA-200 Dot Matrix Printer if that is of any help.

Thanx for any help.

I didn't honestly know what to ask for this unit so I figured that I would
let the buyers determine what they would like to pay. You can have up to 16
hard drives and 4 backup/CD-ROM drives operating at the same time. It has
the full specs if you follow the ebay link.

I also have several other ongoing auctions. Including IBM "clicker"
keyboards in lots of five. Please check them out at

Hi, Gene,
Thanks for your response. This is just a quick
acknowldgement, I'm going to try and get some de-bugging done later today!

I too am suspiscious of the irqs, as midi files are constantly hiccupping
under Linux, though they play fine under windoze and os/2. I thought that
maybe the poor little 120 processor wasn't man enough for the job, but most
people reckon Linux flies even on a 386. My desktop AMD 350 really flies!
However, I can't detect any conflicts. The irq list looks clean enough. I'm
going to double check it VERY carefully. (Is there a better way than cat
/proc/interrupts ?)

I agree that hdparm indicates the cache is on, but in that case why does the
boot message report 0K cache? I'm very puzzled. The only disk that came with
the drive was a disk manager for old bioses. I should add that the drive is
a replacement. The original Maxtor 1G died about a year ago, and I fitted
the Tosh as a replacement. The drive MAY be UDMA66, though I doubt it (its a
2.5" laptop drive, remember) more likely its UDMA33. I'm not sure the CMD
640 chipset supports even that, though I could be wrong. In any case, even
if its running PIO, it should manage better than 0.16 MB/sec!

Anyway, thanks for your response. Its given me a few more things to think
about, and confirmed some suspicions I held already. Keep those suggestions
coming :-)

I had the same problem, but no satisfied answer. It started with my new
grafic card. First it works fine, after inserting my new card, it failed
the
way you described. The only way to compensate this was switching to a
color deep to 8 bit. With 15, 16, 24 and 32 it does not work. But this
solution is
about 3 month old. Within last month I had no time to search for a
"better" solution.
I thougth it depends on the X Server. But I cannot prove this. Its only
a suspiction.
Or it is bttv. Try a newer one... and please tell me your results!!

Thanx
