My Configuration:
Suse 6.3
Sound Blaster AWE 32

PB:
I have done many things to install my SB card but now it's OK.

I can hear Music (.wav, .MP3, .mid (with kmid)) under KDE but
I can't hear Music with kmidi (.kar) (.kar has exactly the same structure as
.mid (same chunks, midi events ...))
When I try these kind of command
    cat zzz.wav > /dev/audio ...
i hear all the music stream in half a second

I'm a beginner with Linux.
I see there is a lot of audio peripherals in /dev (Major devices 14, 35 ...)
I don't how an application find an audio device under KDE. I didn't find any
config file (for KDE or applications kmid, kmid)
with an /dev/ ... line

I would like to retrieve wich audio device use kmid and I would like to do
the same for kmidi.

Thank you

Hello there,

i own an ASUS K7M Board with an Athlon 550 CPU.
There is an onboard sounddevice but i can't find any device drivers.
What modules/libs etc. do I need to make it work ?
Is there a compatibility with other drivers ?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Hi,

does anybody have experience in running Linux
on a VIA Apollo KX133 mainboard (e.g. Tyan Trinity K7) ?

Pardon me for asking a stupid question, but sometimes it's the stupid
questions that get overlooked. Are you sure you have ATAPI/IDE CD-ROM
support compiled into the kernel? Your message doesnt' make it clear
whether or not you can read data disks from the drive.

I have heard that there are some compatibility problems with
the new Athlon processor, but I used to run Slackware on an
AMD 486 DX2/80 with no problem.

Hi everyone,

I know this is off-topic, but I got the error right here.
Can someone give me more infos about this error:

   An News (NNTP) error occurred:
Article not posted -- more included text than new text

I'm using Netscape 4.7 for News.

I think sometimes it could be sensible to have more included text than
new one.
I've done it often, and no error occured.

Thank you for your answers.

I have a ZIP-100 and a CD-RW. I use the ZIP only to transport data
between different computers, but I use the CD-RW for backup. The only
problem is, that I didn't found a suitable program to to this. Meanwhile
I use XCD-Roast and have to split up the directorys manually, as I need
more CD-RWs for my backup.

Sorry, I have only SCSI (Last year the only real choice).
But nowadays IDE CDRWs should be supported good enough.

That's the problem. Send me a mail if you found something suitable (i.e.
automatically splitting data on more CDs).

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Modem says BUSY when it isn't!!!
Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 13:12:01 GMT

I've built a fax server based around Linux. I'm using 2 Comtrol
RockertPort serial cards with 8 RS232 serial ports on each card and
I've created a bunch of scripts to automatically listen for faxes
via 'efax' and update our Intranet on the fly. This works absolutely
fine.

The main problem I'm having is that when I send faxes it works
intermittently which has left me completely confused!!!

When I send a fax to a number, the modem (Askey Magic Express 56k/V.90
external voice/fax/data modem) dials correctly but hangs up
and reports the line as "BUSY" after a couple of rings. The length of
time that it rings varies from about 10 seconds to 50 seconds sometimes
but as long as the target fax machine answers in time, I get a
delivered fax.

On one particular line that I call, the modem is programmed to answer
after 4 rings but the modem always seems to report busy
before it can answer. One thing I have noted is that the faxes
generally go through the first time after I boot up the PC so it leads
me to believe
that the software is possibly not configured correctly.

I've tested it by calling standard phone lines with 'fax send' and it
still reports busy for landlines or mobiles. However, when I call my
mobile
manually by using ATDTxxxxxxx, it doesn't show a false busy so the
hardware appears to be OK.

I'm using efax 0.9a using its standard generic modem commands but these
can be changed.

I've looked at the commands in the manual but only one appears to state
how long the phone waits before a carrier but this reports
'NO ANSWER' instead of busy. Has anyone got any ideas about what is
causing this? Any ideas will be warmly appreciated!!!

Look at your BIOS config for the function of the front switch.

With ATX you can enable "APM" and "poweroff on halt" in the kernel
config,
if you compile a new one. Then the computer powers off automatically
when shutting down.

I was disappointed that Windows98 does and Linux doesn't, until I found
out how.
Works great now.

The error is generated by the news server. For INN, there is a parameter
checkincludedtext in inn.conf.

Yes, Steve, I can read data disks without any problem whatsoever.
My kernel is 2.2.12-20 and I'm in the process of applying incremental
patches until hopefully I can hit one that has support for the Acer 50X
reader.
Thanks for the input anyway.

Really? We have two asus dual systems in rather heavy server use, and
they don't lock up. Both are running distributed net
clients (2 threads) all the time.

The only problems were with the older one, when we tried to use the
adaptec scsi on the mobo; that would crash under heavy load. We
switched to BusLogic SCSI and haven't had problems since. They only go
down for software upgrades. The other has 219 days uptime at the
moment.

However, harking back to the original question, I would choose a fast
Athlon for home use. In fact, that's exactly what I did.

If you have a Parallel Colorado Direct, you can try to go to this site

there is a driver for some Primax Scanner.

You answered your own question. 83Mhz fsb has got to be
about the worst oc going, short of boards that don't support
a =BC pci divider at bus speeds just under 133mhz. Your system
isn't/hasn't been stable at 541mhz. EG, I run a p3-450 on a
Soyo 6ba+III. It boots and runs 99% of Winblows apps at 624mhz.
It will also boot and run Linux at 616mhz, most all the time.

BUT, it won't run prime95's '16 hour' self test in either
Windoze or Linux, or run 'safbench o' (dos) or 'memtest86' (Linux)
with absolutely NO errors at FSB over 135mhz. It's stable at=20
608mhz, but not higher. At 608mhz my pci bus is in spec at 33+.
At 541 your's is 41+, an' way too fsck'n high. With 'cpuburn'
runnin for a long time, my cpu's internal core temp never goes
over 44C, your temp is ? I use a pci voodoo3 to avoid agp problems
on agp buses over 80mhz, do you have an agp card?

Bottom line is you bought the wrong celery. You should have
got the C366 and clocked it to 550 with good cooling. All your
bus speeds, 100/33/66 (fsb/pci/agp) would then be in spec.

Subject: Cyclades card does not work with VA Linux box and 2.2 Kernel
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Pete Rossi)
Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2000 15:03:29 GMT

I have having extreme difficulty trying to get a Cyclades 8YO PCI
card to work with a VA Linux system (Tyan S1832DL Tiger 100 motherboard)

The system will hang as soon as the Cyclades driver starts to install
(either built-in or as a module).. yet the card is being recognized by
the driver.. just before it hangs.

This is only with a 2.2 Kernel. A 2.0 Kernel seems to work OK but
we must run the 2.2 Kernel to support other applications, etc..

I have been in contact with the Cyclades people and about all they
can suggest is to use a different motherboard or use an ISA Cyclades
card... both of which are not really acceptable..

What was done in the 2.2 Kernel that causes this card not to work?
