Thanks. I ran the modprobe aic7xxx command. The system located my new
SCSI adapter and I was able to partition the drive and eventually mount
a volume on it. However, after rebooting the system, I found that I had
to run modprobe again in order to mount the volume I'd just created.
Also, even though I can mount the volume, if I do an fdisk and try to
view the partition table, nothing is listed.

Yes. You mirror the disk partitions (unmounted) then create the
filesystem on the mirror device (/dev/md0) and mount that.

Subject: Gigabyte 6BXC problem

Hi Folks,

I recently purchased A Gigabyte GA-6BXC motherboard with Celeron 400 and
64 MB PC100 SDRAM. I am running this with 66 MHz bus speed since system
does not boot at 100 MHz bus speed.

The problem occurs when I try to compile some large programs such as the
compiler egcs-1.1.2, or gcc-2.8.1 with this system, the current compiler
gives FATAL SIGNAL 11 error and stops. But the same system compiles
kernel, 2.2.9 and some small C programs without a problem.

The current compiler is 2.7.2.1 and I am using it with my K6-300 system
and K6 system compiled gcc-2.8.1 without a problem. This eliminates a bug
in the compiler. So the only cause for SIGNAL 11 is hardware.
But I could not locate the source of the problem exactly,

Do you have any ideas in order to fix the problem ?

Can running PC100 SDRAMs at 66 MHZ bus speed create a problem ?

Thanks you for any reply in advance.

No, it's not. Unix boxes are easier to maintain in large numbers. When problems
occur, they are easier to fix, even for fledgling sysadmins.

No? You've never had chains of interrupt conflicts? Magical changes due to
Plug&Pray? Video drivers that are supposed to be compatible but aren't? Another
reboot demanded because you decided to change the screen resolution? And then
the resolution didn't work (even though it was fine when you tested it) and you
get horrible lines and you can't see anything and your only choice is to switch
off? An the next reboot takes 4 hours while scandisk repairs your trashed NTFS
filesystem and the 4 FAT filesystems? And you fall asleep before you get to the
promt where you can choose the VGA mode so you go straight back to the squiggly
lines?....

NT sucks. M$ sucks. When you want it to do something properly, you have to pay
them money. It's what BG calls good business.

You can't install free languages. Those that exist are hardly worth the prices
you pay for them. Many Unixes come with C compilers, and Gnu C is available in
open source. As are many other languages.> >5) Having problems with the OS - too

Yep, but the "tools out there" are weak compared to the abilities that come with
every version of Unix.

Perl is a scripting languages, but it is available for NT. I rather fancy he
means the ability to write shell scripts. Fortunately, a Korn shell-like program
is available for NT. However NT's ability to call the written scripts at
predetermined times is weak compare to Unix.

I'm not sure how big the difference is, but I do know it exists. The Alpha is a
great chip. Try http://www.sgi.com/t3e/ to see...

Subject: Q: Second extended partitions!?!?!
Date: 1 Jun 1999 13:07:20 GMT

Hi everyone.

I'm not a linux or a hardware wizard, but do know my way around with
computers.
But... now I have a problem I can't solve. A few day ago I installed Linux
on my
computer (AMD-K6-233; Asus TX 97; 1x IBM 10.1 GB EIDE 7200 rpm; 1x Quantum
4GB EIDE 5200 RMP) I had some free space and created an ext2 partition on
the
Quantum and a 32 MB swap partition on the IBM. From that point on, Linux is
not
able to use the swap space and DOS/Windows reports that two extended
partitions
exist. I used Partition Magic to see what's on (see below) and dicovered
that the 32 MB
swap drive suddenly appeared to look like a SECOND extended partition.

My question is how to get rid of that partition (fdisk doesn't recognise or
see it, scandisk
reports nothing, defrag sometimes reports errors that have to be repaired
before it can
continue and diskdruid is also unable to handle the second ext. partition.

Of course one posibility is to re-format the entire HD, but I would like to
know if it is
possible to solve this without removing the data on the primary and
(official) extended
partition (which wroks fine).

Please send any comments, questions or solutions to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

First of all, is your modem on COM1?
If yes, proceed.
How did you set it with isapnp?
Did you did a 'pnpdump >/etc/isapnp.conf'?
Did you edit the file /etc/isapnp.conf to match the resources of your modem
and DIDN'T forget to uncomment the line ACT Y at the bottom of the modem
list?
Did you run isapnp (obvious :-))?
If you answer to all these questions is YES, then I can't help you but I can
give a hint: IRQ conflict?

Subject: Is it possible to build a sub-$500 Linux machine?
Date: 1 Jun 1999 17:20:24 GMT

I am new to Linux. Having heard of how wonderful it is, I want to build
a sub-$500 PC (not including the monitor) with Linux only. I am thinking
of a machine on par with the other $500 windoz PC on the market in terms
of the hardware. A Celeron 366 or AMD K6-2 350, a 100Mhz ATX Motherboard,
4mb-8mb Video, a 36xCDROM drive, 56K modem, 4.3Gb HDD, a cheapo-sound card
and speaker. Is this possible? Will I run into support problems because I
picked up cheap components?

Thanks for reply.

Shi
