Subject: Soundblaster midi
Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 08:54:28 +0000

I am fairly new to linux, finally have almost everything working and
very happy with it. I just finished a recompile of my kernel to fix a
bug with the zip drive. I am now getting an error at boot with my
Soundblaster midi driver, i have set up everything in the kernel
correctly, as far as i can tell, but it won't load the awe_wave.o
driver. here is the error message

Loading sound module [ OK ]
Loading midi module
No AWE synth device is found
sound: Device or resource busy
post-install /lib/modules/2.3.2/misc/awe_wave.o failed

[FAILED]

i know there is an AWE sytth device on the card, it is a Soundblaster
AWE64.
any help with this would be appreciated

also i am getting errors at boot time taht don't seemt o effect
anything, i am running the 2.3.3 kernel and it keeps telling me that
system.map has the wrong kernel version, is this a bug in 2.3.3? if you
notice the path for awe_wave.o l;ists the kernel as 2.3.2... i thought
that might be the bug

one other thing, i would like to set up the ftp server, stupid me when i
installed the sytem i overlooked that, but i don't see anywhere that i
can download it, and i can't find a deamon on my system to run... how do
i set this up?

Thank you for all your help

Mike

If the plugin runs in a different process space from the application, the plugin crash
will not
affect the application. If component runs in its own process space, its crash will not
bring
down the OS. If the component is written to a well-documented and well-specified
interface,
there are less chances of crashes than an undocmented component created by the vendor.

If the microkernel is correct and noncrashable, you wont be able to crash the rest of
the OS.

That's the way it's going to be -- whether you like it or not. It will not be flaky,
instead it
will be bullet-proof. No OS builder will want to buy a 'flaky' buggy component.
Crashes will be
a thing of the past.

Whether you realize this or not -- many commodities are built using parts from
different
vendors. Examples include airplanes,
cars, toys, and of course.. computers (what is the ratio of hardware failure -to-
software crash
? 0.0001 )

Hi,

I have kernel 2.2.9 running on a new laptop (APM / ACPI 1.2 compliant or
so it says) but I cannot get kernel level support for apm working.

I compile a normal kernel without apm support and it boots up and works
fine.
I then change one config option only to enable apm support and the new
kernel gets to the stage of detecting my hard-drive (after printing
chipset info), prints out a line about it ie hda: xxxxx etc. and hangs
(the cursor stope flashing too). (I've tried fiddling with other apm
options but it doesn't help)

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is / could be?
I can post more detailed specs / info about it if it helps.

I've tried to disable BIOS power saving functions but the least it
allows is "Standard power saving" (ie not OFF). Is that a problem?

If no-one knows what's wrong, then what is the best way to diagnose the
problem? How can I set up the kernel to tell me more of what's happening
at startup ? how can I find out which function causes it to hang?

Thanks if anyone can help,

Amir Shamsuddin

Doing a "df" on that other system, and taking a look at the
predefined partition tables in /etc/format.dat would probably
have helped.

I admit I have the full set of printed documentation at hand.
Got them for free when my employer decided they only needed
one set...

Anyway, the partitioning problem is not unique to SunOS.

When your system boots go into your SCSI card BOIS and check there. On my
Tekram card I can chose which drive to boot from, from drive 0 to 15 (I
think it goes up to 15).

Hope this helps,

suse linux doc has an appendix D. There a desc of the most important

For a backup you can try tar like this:

I just upgraded my Linux hardware which was quite a painless process. I added
a new SCSI card and hard drive. Since I was using a older SCSI controller for
my Windows box I decided to put the old PCI SCSI card from my Linux box on the
Windows box. In linux all I have to do is make a new boot disk for the New
SCSI card. In Windows how do you make a new boot disk? It took me days of
copying files from the CDROM to the hard drive (Windows won't let you use your
CDROM drive in safe mode, how stupid!!! How is one supposed to load drivers to
fix problems!?!) I finally got Windows running. In the meantime I was surfing
the web downloading and installing new programs and updates with my Linux box.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't know how MS has fooled
everyone into using their piece of crap OS.

Just my 2 pennies,

You can get ten or fifteen old 486's for that price but get at least
32Mb of ram.

I got four of em running off in the background came with scsi's, nic's,
video, and sound built in. Only the video doesn't work well (there old)
but all I really use em for is the hard drive, ram, and cpu's.

Wanting anyone that can point me to a compilable version of BTTV that
included the TDA98XX module - or to a compilable version of the module or
a compiled version of the module for RH6.0.

Seems my sound isn't working in bttv/xawtv because my card is BT878 +
some other chip. Wanting to give this one a go as the others didn't work.

Unless someone else has a better solution for solving my perfect video
perfect tuner - no audio problem.

Try adding these lines to your [global] section:

        printing = BSD
        printcap name = /etc/printcap

I chased this problem for a while after upgrading from RedHat 5.2 to 6.0 and
rebuilding samba from the source. While I originally approached it the
problem by investigating the source, several others on the net reminded me
that it can be addressed from the samba configuration file (too easy :-).

The samba configure script now decides that you have a System V system
(#define SYSV) and thus assumes SYSV printing (lp, lpstat vs lpr, lpq).
Since there is no lpstat command under Linux as packaged, the print fails.

The culprit is in source/include/includes.h:

/* this guess needs to be improved (tridge) */
#if (defined(STAT_STATVFS) || defined(STAT_STATVFS64)) && !defined(SYSV)
#define SYSV 1
#endif

It looks like "tridge" figured that this would come back to haunt him. My
guess is that the introduction of STAT_STATVFS64 caused this change in
default behavior. Defining SYSV establishes the lpstat command as the
default mechanism for determining the defined print queues. You can override
the default with the above changes to your /etc/smb.conf file.
