If you can do it, then compiling everything statically has the
benefit of simplicity. Less to learn, fewer daemons to run, fewer
config files to maintain. Not much of a benefit, except maybe in
an embedded system or diskless workstation.
There are certain drivers that can be compiled either way, but
are a bit easier to configure statically than as modules, e.g.
some non-PnP sound card drivers. There are some drivers that
can be compiled either way but only work right if you compile
them as modules, because they need to be configured with
information that's not available until after boot, e.g. drivers
for some PnP or PCMCIA devices.
I agree that most people should configure most stuff as modules.
Use "make bzImage" anyway; that way you won't have to switch
later if your kernel grows. Plus it's good to get in the habit
of using bzip2 instead of gzip; if everyone did this it would
save a lot of bandwidth.

How do you get Linux to recognize 2 CD-Rom drives? I can get the master drive

I recently went from Slackware 3.6 to Slackware 4.0 and was previously
only required to type <configure>
Another person suggested that I try adding the current working directory
to my command such as
<./configure>
This works and now I'm up and running.
About the TNT2 drivers, I installed the .so from the Nvidia site and set
my Xf86Config for SVGA as someone on this n.g., patched the diff to
/usr/X11 and a few other directories I thought the /XServer/ was in.

I actually managed to munge my system up pretty badly (but not unrecoverably)
using 'make -j'. I was getting all kinds of "can't fork" errors (with 192 MB
of memory and 256 MB of swap, I should damn well have been able to fork).
Anyway, less risky way of doing the same test is to use 'make -j 2' or -j 4,
replacing the number with the number of CPUs you have.
Also, changing the MAKE definition in linux/Makefile is not necessary. Just
doing 'make -j 2 zImage' is sufficient. Make will pass its parameters to its
children.
If you visit the SIG-11 FAQ (http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11) page, you'll see
a little script that does 100 kernel compiles. That's what I used to test
my dual celery system.

I've just booted the RH 6.0 with a Celeron 400 and the SIS 3dPro card.
Xconfigurator does not provide for 24bit color at any
resolution --- the maximum color is 16bit at 800x600.
I believe that the 3dPro with 8M should be able to
generate 24bit color but if I try to force it with xf86config
the X server (XF_SVGA) does not work.
Please let me know if there is a way to get 24bit color with
this card under Linux. Even 640x480 resolution should work.
I'm using a Dell 17 inch monitor which works fine at
1024x768x24bits with an ATI card under RH 5.2.

i have a dual port scsi raid system with 2 linux systems connected to it
both run redhat 5.2
there is an ext2 filesystem on the raid box (~26Gbytes)
the problem i have is that if linux box A writes a file to the raid
filesystem,
linux box B doesn't see the file
if i reboot linux box B, it sees the file,
if i write the file with linux box A BEFORE the mounting the raid system
on linux box B for the FIRST time it sees the file
i tried unmounting and then mounting the raid system on linux box B,
but it still doesn't see the file
the first mount of the raid system takes much longer than later mounts,
i assume that linux is only "looking" at the raid system the first time
it
mounts it (and buffers the directory and file info into memory ?)
is there a way to get linux to "relook" at the disk ?
rebooting the system takes too long, i am looking for
a faster way of seeing the files
i hope this makes sense
thanks for any help in advance,

Help!
I have a ccomputer I wnat to put linux on, this is the hardware:
Some motherboard with a soldered-in 486sx33 processor oveclocked to 50mhz (I
did heatsink it, don't worry), ISA bus
8megs of ram (8x1meg 30pin simms)
Some ISA Hyundai interface controller (IDE, FDC, serial, parallel)
Trident 8900c3.0 ISA video card with 512k video ram
102meg hd (terribly small)
Some floppy drive
Not maths coprocessor (it's an SX, remember)
I have a RealTek8019 lan card (NE2000 compatiple) that I will be installing.
I will be adding a CD-ROM drive probably.
I need to know what distribution would be best on such a low hd space, I
don't need X. This machine will be used as a server on my LAN, it will be a
router (or proxy) and www server. I will be upgrading it this summer to a
p100 with 128megs of ram and 4,3gig hd so this will be a temporary
installation. The whole small hard drive will be for linux because I don't
need dos, I also need some good partitioning program (to make a Linux native
partition and a swap partition, I only have fips now and that prog only
splits a dos partition and makes ext2 (linux native) but doesn't delete the
dos partition so I get stuck with a useless 7megs dos partition.

I had similar experiences with a dual PII-450 system with 256mb RAM and
3 128mb swap partitions (all on different disks).

I seem to get the best performance (maximizing cpu usage) by using "-j 6" on
dual processor boxen.

Not always. I use:
make -j 6 MAKE="make -j 6" bzImage

Yow! When I want to beat up on them for testing, I generally fire
up the multithreaded rc5 client and then start a couple of concurrent
emacs-20.x compiles.

Hi,
There are some newer BIOS programs at FIC web site; they are
supposed to render older UDMA/33 chipsets compatible with UDMA/66
drives. Even if your problem is not UDMA/66-compatibility related,
you could still try those newer BIOSes (I did not have a reason to
try them myself: my Quantum EX UDMA/33 runs in DMA mode with both
VA-503+ and PA-2013).
It is also a good idea to check the drive manufacturer's web site:
there could be some EXE utilities to reconfigure the drives (I got
one for my Quantum CR UDMA/66, to switch it back to UDMA/33).
Best,
a.

Anyway, something to note about ZIP Disks is that the main partition is
by default the fourth partition. I don't know why that is, and maybe someone
could enlighten us.
Anyhoo, you should probably try 'mount -t vfat /dev/hdb4 /mnt/zip', with the
necessary changes made for your system. Aside from that, as long as IDE
floppy support is built into the kernel (is that even required), it should
work dandily (well).

I know my provider is using CHAP authentification and that I have to add
username + password to the /etc/ppp/chap-secrets, but using kppp it tells me
(I have the German version, the English output may differ):
modem ready
dialing <number>
network login
Then (after some 30 seconds) it hangs up the modem. But: I DON'T KNOW WHY!!!
Please help me, thanx.

I am going to install Linux 6.1 (Suse) on my PC. (All works with WindowsNT).
I have a ADAPTEC 2940 SCSI-Controller and a NEC SCSI-2 CDROM 502. I can boot
from the installation-CD, but the CDROM-Device is not detected when the
Installation-Program scans the SCSI-Bus. Are there known problems with my
CDROM-Device?

Most PCI modems are not supposed to work.
For those two which have been reported to work.. see
http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/PCImodems.html
I am pretty sure that you are talking about _something_
which is HSP, DSP, HCF, or whatever which is lacking specifications
and therefore proper drivers. Such things are usually called `winmodems'.
Best,

This is from the Special Edition: Using Linux
for RH 5.1 incompatible hardware list:
-canon lbp-465
-HP deskjet 820xx, 720c, 722c
-Lexmark 1000 (i had one)
-sharp JX-9210
-all printers/plotters connected to the
parallel/serial port should work. Alas
some hve been created for Win95 only.
Good luck...

Help...
I bought a nice computer (win98 preinstaled...) with a SB 64 PnP. I
installed SuSE Linux on it, but I'd like to use sound. It doesn't work, in
the manual my card isn't listed, so I don't have the faintest Idea how to
handle this problem.
probebly I will have to download a driver somewhere....
I am completely unexperienced with Linux so please don't assume beasic
knowledge...

Subject: CT MediaGX motherboards and Linux

Howdy folks,
Anyone have experience or even second hand rumors
of the GCT MediaGX motherboards working with
Linux?
These boards have built in CPU, Audio, Video, etc
and are SMALL and CHEAP. Perfect little beasties
for car or home MP3 players.
Unfortunately I am wanting to use Linux to run my
MP3 player so I am concerned about the audio or
CPU not being supported. I don't care about the
video, and I am sure all the other stuff will work
good.
Here is a URL for the manufacturer:
