First of all, if you think Windows is a pain in the ass, just wait
until you try linux!
Second, if you are getting blue screen errors in Windows98, you have
some problems there that need to be addressed. You might want to
consider Windows NT or Windows2000 if you want a more stable
environment without having to learn an entirely new way of doing
things. However, I would first consider finding out why you are getting
fatal exceptions in Windows98, it could be a hardware problem.
P.S. If you are not that computer Savvy, I would suggest sticking with
Windows98 and figuring out why you are getting fatal exceptions.
P.S. there is no support for the internal DSL modems in linux
and as far as the scanner and camera are concerned, I would say
probably not a chance of getting linux drivers..

Subject: Orchid NuSound card problems
Date: 06 Mar 2000 01:03:53 +0000
I have an Orchid NuSound card that I'm trying to get working with linux.
Its Aureal based (the vortex chip has AU8820B2 printed on it) so I was assuming it
should work with the aureal drivers.
I have kernel 2.2.14 compiled with Sound support but always get the following
error :
/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/au8820.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
I have tried switching off PnP support in my BIOS but it didn't make a difference.
Does anyone know if the drivers should work for this card and maybe give
me a clue as to where I'm going wrong. I have seen a few messages
talk about changing IRQs for the card in the BIOS but mine only gives the option of
saying whether each IRQ is "PCI/ISA PnP" or "Legacy ISA".
I have also tried switching which PCI slot the card is in with no better results
(tried it in slots 2 and 3 , I don't have anything in slot 1)
Could there be any kernel configuration options I'm overlooking ?
Please help !

joystick.o is just the basic support for joysticks (vaguely similar to
soundcore.o for sound?). You still need to insert the proper module for
your device (eg 'modprobe joy-sidewinder' or something like that).

4Front Technologies sells OSS for $20.00. OSS is a set of device
drivers that supports quite a few sound cards (the i810 is one of
them) under several different operating systems.

Hi there,
Been trying to get DMA33 to work on my hda and hdb but have been running
into glitches every time. These include Netscape failing to start with
a 'bus error', random system hangs, and things like Tcl/Tk scripts and
even 'su' segfaulting. Here is some relevant info:
Gigabyte GA-686LX3 mobo
/dev/hda:
Model=ST36531A, FwRev=3.05, SerialNo=VS324357
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }

/dev/hdb:
Model=SAMSUNG VG36483A, FwRev=FL101-43, SerialNo=dW1910130573d8

mword2
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4
UDMA modes: mode0 mode1 *mode2
The above info is without enabling DMA. I am just using the '-d1'
hdparm switch and although I get performance gains (from about 3 to 8 on
hda and 3 to 10 on hdb) these still seem rather low plus I get the
abovementioned instabilities. I've done this with custom kernels
2.2.12-2.2.14 and several Red Hat/Rawhide RPM kernels (same versions).
Any ideas?
Justin

Try saying yes to the first two options under joystick support in xconfig,
and then maybe say yes to gravis gamepad.
Just a shot in the dark....I did this and my pad seems to be recongnized at
boot-up, but never tried it in a game yet.

You could be right at that. The "memtest86" utility would be a good thing
to check out. It can be found below:
http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86
I had similar problems but it turned out that the RAM wasn't faulty; it
was either the El Cheapo motherboard I had at the time or its integrated
video. I suppose you could try disabling the cache in the system BIOS and
see if the problem goes away, but the performance hit there would be
absolutely awful. Good luck...

Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2000 21:34:31 -0500
OK, so I finally got sound working on my HP OmniBook 4150 Laptop. It seems
that although the chipset is a NeoMagic 256AV, and the windows drivers all
say "NeoMagic", apparently for Linux-Mandrake-RedHat-etc (I'm using Mandrake
7.0-2) you should use the "CS4231"/"ad1848" drivers with the setting as
reported in the BIOS screen. Override the sndconfig with
"--noprobe --noautoconfig". I also had to manually change the IRQ to "5" in
/etc/conf.modules, as it wasn't an option in sndconfig and is what the BIOS
screen reported. I also switched the BIOS audio selection from "automatic"
to "Enabled" to keep the settings consistent. Go Figure.
Anyways, all is now copacetic on the sound front, with one small exception:
When I resume from suspend or hibernate (write RAM to disk) the sound driver
loops playback or "stutters", i.e. the "Max Headroom" effect.
If I do a "play" from the command line I get a bunch of :
"Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?"
lines for the duration of the sample. So I think I understand what is
happening, i.e. the DMA isn't working, but not why. Does anyone have any
ideas on fixing this?
At the very least any idea on how to reset the sound driver so I can stick
it in the resume script?
I thought of doing an "rmmod" then "insmod" of the sound driver module, but
it claims it's busy and won't remove it (not suprisingly).
Please copy reply to an e-mail as well as post as I am a very infrequent
Usenet reader. I can be reached at: jldean-at-mindspring-dot-com (Spammers:
May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits.)
Sincerely,
James Dean
P.S. Hopefully this will make it into searchable archives like Deja etc. as
I couldn't find anything about the correct driver to use for an OB4150, and
the nm256 driver locks it up!

This *should* work. I don't know for sure, though. Athlon processors and
motherboards are very picky about their power supplies; you may have to
get a new one to make everything work happily. Actually, since you
referred to an ISA serial/parallel card, I'm assuming this is a Baby AT
board. You might want to get an ATX board and a new ATX case if you do
have to get a new power supply--ATX is just so much nicer in many ways...

The dual-head support will be in Xfree86 4.0. If you can't wait, Xi
Graphics is selling a commercial X-server that supports dual-head for the
G400. I forget how much it costs; $100 US or so.

Parport scanner support is pretty limited.
http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners.html
might provide a starting point, at least.

It is posible. First you need to download a usb backport of the 2.3 kernel.
Try www.linux-usb.org Then you have to enable scsi suport and usb scsi
support. It is considered a mass storage device. That is all I know you are

Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2000 04:08:01 GMT
I'm very new to Linux, but I decieded to build a computer and put it
on it anyway. I have installed Red Hat 6.1 on a PII with a 13 gig
Hard drive and everything went fine. It's up and running with a
connection to the internet.
I made hda have three partitions when I installed from scratch.
One was "swap", another was "/" and the last was "/usr"
I now want to add a second Hard Drive to the system, should be no
problem..... wrong!!! I have the CMOS fine, the system finds both
drives OK but I don't get the standard LILO: prompt during boot.
It seem to say something like
DHCP MAC ADDR: 00 D0 B7 1D F6 B9
DHCP..../ <--- Twerley Bar goes for ~30 sec.
Next message says
DHCP MAC ADDR: 00 D0 B7 1D F6 B9
PXE-E51: No DHCP or BOOTP offers received
Invalid Partition table_
I don't know why the "DHCP" message comes up I am not using DHCP.
If I unplug the second drive and re-boot, everything is fine again.
I think it has somthing to do with LILO not able to find the booting
drive "hda"
Can anyone help me??
