Nice thought but no. I was thinking of doing the same but there is no
such thing. You could have no soundcard in the main machine and a
junky video card and have a large harddrive and (I know you don't want
this) a client computer with sound/video to mount it's fs off the
server. Or you'd have to run 3 cable all over your house.

AFAIK, there is no X server for the 128 bit ATI cards yet, although I did
hear a rumour that someone was working on one. You should be able to get
it to work with the vesa framebuffer support in the 2.2 kernels, and the
XFree86-FBDev server. It won't be accelerated, though.

I just upgraded from RH5.1 to RH6. Most things seem to work fine. lp no
longer works, though. When I try to print a sample page from the
printtool menu, it complains that there is no device or file "/dev/lp0"
and that it can't start the demon. Listing the /dev/ directory does
indeed show lp0, lp1, and lp2. What could be wrong?
Also, what is the /dev/pts filesystem?

If you add . to your path, you won't have to type the leading ./ . But it's
obviously a security risk, so I wouldn't advise it.

Why don't the CPU and hardware manuals answer the
question? If you go to a much lower level, then you
are into electrical engineering.
Are you trying to figure out low-level semi-conductor
devices, bi-polar junctions, MOSFETs and associated
interactions? How to bias a transistor junction?
This doesn't look like a simple question.

x86-based computers have a limit on what can be loaded initially. I am not sure
what the exact size, but I am pretty sure it is under 2mb, and maybe even 1mb.
It was a hardware design that dates back to the first personal computers. No
one ever imagined users would have so much memory in computers, let alone over
1mb(back then, memory capacity was as low as 64kb, if not lower). Don't blame
the "kernel too large" error message on the coders, look towards Intel and the
other hardware manufacturers. Also, blame may not be all theirs now, as I think
that would be a major design change to the hardware, so you can blame it on M$
and their lack of evolution.

I am using the DFE530TX with the via-rhine driver that came with mandrake6.0. I
have not had any problems. I am running my home network through the D-link
cards and I am also using IP forwarding and Masquarading. I did have to add it
as a module in /etc/conf.modules. The line that I put in is:
alias eth1 via-rhine
Of coarse the eth1 may be different for you application. For example the line
before that one is:
alias eth0 ne2k-pci
I hope that this was of some help to you.

Date: Sat, 05 Jun 1999 03:10:32 GMT
As this is a general problem with large disks, I'm cross posting, with
apologies for being a bit off topic for redhat.
I am unable to get correct partition information to Lizard of Lisa and
cannot install.
Here's the deal. My drive a is a Western Digital Caviar 8.4 Gig. It is
from where I run W98 and Boot Magic as my boot manager. Drive b is an
old Quantum Fireball 1.2 gig from where I run Red Hat, ext2 and swap.
BIOS is Phoenix M54Hi - 11PM (latest update, btw) on a Micron P133 with
80 Meg of RAM.
Drive a is jumpered per WD instructions to report 4092 cylinders (2.1
GB) and runs EZ-Drive 9.06W overlay, so as to be able to properly access
the drive under Windows.
I set up a new partition on a using Partition Magic 4.0 for Caldera 2.2;
boot using the Caldera boot disc. In no instance can I get a correct
partition table report on a. I get a report of 4 partitions of about
2.1 meg. I've tried booting before and after EZ-Drive loads, to no
avail. I think the jumpers may be causing the problem. If true, it may
force me to acquire a second machine to run Windows, unjumper this one
for Linux.
I've read through the current Large Disk HOWTO, on the Linux
Documentation site and, in general, overwhelmed myself with all sort and
measure of techo babble ;) So far, no luck.
Thank you.

Instead of using 'make zImage' when you're at that last step, try using
'make bzImage'. Bzipped files are MUCH smaller than their zipped
counterparts. That's what the error message means when it says use
bzImage, btw. And also, just in case you don't know what to do to get your
kernel working after it has been compiled and such, there are still some
more steps left over. What you'll want to do is issue the command:
# cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage
and then use your fav. editor (vi, emacs, joe, whatever you like) to edit
the file /etc/lilo.conf so that it points to your new kernel instead of
the one it points to now. That should get you going; any more questions
and let me know, I'll be glad to answer them (if I can....) Good luck!

Subject: SCSI scanners
Date: Sat, 05 Jun 1999 03:47:54 +0000
I have been trying to get a scanner going on my RH5.2 system for a week,
and need a little advise. I am going with the SANE, Umax combination.
On the website, it was mentioned that it's a workable combination.
The card that came with my 1200S scanner won't work. It was mentioned
on the SANE website somewhere. I then tried to get this Adapted 2906
card to work. It was lower priced, and they mentioned "scanner" in the
description, so I bought one. I didn't work. After checking about 1000
sites, there is no support for this card, and adaptec told me they don't
support linux:)
I picked up this Advansys ABP-3922 card, again a low priced one just to
get the scanner working. Advansys illegedly has been "linux compatable"
for years, and this card was said to work with it as well. The problem
is that it won't detect the card. The BIOS check is fine. There don't
appear to be any IRQ problems. The limited SCSI support mentioned
trying something like this at boot up
LILO: append="advansys=0x800,9,7,1"
to force the thing to detect. It spit back something like "this makes
no sense, hit TAB for list" Anyway, I'm stuck. I'm on card number
three, this time with a linux compatable one, and it's not going well.
I added the advansys.o module under "control-panel" (It showed up in
/etc/conf.modules) but that didn't change anything.
Any help would be appreciated. I will repost any helpful suggestions.

I've used my zip plus on macintoshes, linux/intel boxes (both SCSI and
parallel port connections), and windows/intel machines, all without any
problems. When using the drive with linux and attached to the parallel
port, be sure to use the imm module. Just run "modprobe imm" as root. The
drive should then be available as /dev/sda4. Aside from the slow speed
inherent in all zip drives, and the relatively small size of the disks, I
would recommend the drive as an all-around solution to swapping files
around.

Linux prints the following in your syslog:

but trying to continue
Jun 6 19:19:37 draken kernel: You probably have a hardware problem with

> One would assume the proper thing would be to kill the offending

Kill the offending process wouldn't help. This is not because of a bug
in the program but because of a bad SIMM. Other programs which happens
to use that part of RAM will also get problems. These problems might
cause segementation violations which will then make linux kill them with
a core-dump. The problems might also lead to other problems in silence.
Halting the OS in this situation wouldn't be such a bad idea.
However, having parity in these situations is really good. Then you will
know that your problems are because of bad RAM. Not because of crappy
programs. Not because your overclocked CPU is overheated. Not because
your HD is swapping bits in your executables. You really know that you
should try to replace your memory.
