You should have gotten a disk with the card. On it is a DOS program called
3c5x9cfg. If you run this it will allow you to configure/test the card. Under
the configure options is the ability to turn off PnP and set static resources.

Subject: SCSI card & scanner hangs kernel?
Date: Mon, 7 Jun 1999 13:07:51 +0100
Hello...
I'm having problems with my scanner.
The SCSI card is ACARD and the kernel does recognize the SCSI device on
boot.
I'm using kernel 2.2.9 in a Pentium 150, with Debian installed.
If I boot with the scanner powered off, no problem, the kernel recognizes
the device and continues on, but if the scanner is on
at boot time, I get this weird error, which I had to copy by hand, so it
may not be exactly as it shows:
[...]

SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 2) timed out - trying harder

After this, a short noise from the scanner... and nothing else.
I have left the computer 30 minutes in this state but nothing else
happened.
I don't really know the brand of the scanner. Windows' driver is called
"MiraScan 32" or something similar, but anyway, I don't
think this is normal.
Does somebody know what can I do? At least, how can I know what type of
scanner this is? If I boot with the scanner
powered off and later I switch it on, SANE's find-scanner does not find
anything (sane 1.0.1-debian).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: AMI Megaraid failure with 2.2 kernels?
Date: Mon, 07 Jun 1999 06:19:36 -0700
My current system, RH5.2/kernel 2.0.36, contains an AMI Megaraid
controller, model 428.
I've recently attempted to upgrade to distributions (Caldera and Redhat)
with the 2.2 kernel. Caldera refuses to recognize the controller and
their support folks say it is not supported, despite being listed on
the hardware page. The RH installation lists the AMI controller but
hangs when it scans the scsi bus looking for the CDROM. The last
messages are:
[scans the 2 scsi buses and sees the drives]
<4>SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 1.
<4>sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 0x/0x caddy
<6>Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.54
After running into the wall there I upgraded my libraries, installed the
2.2 kernel source and compiled a new kernel. Booting to that kernel
resulted in a system hang during SCSI initialization:
[scans the busses and detects all devices]
scsi : detected 1 SCSI cdrom 3 SCSI disks total.
scsi0 channel 1 : resetting for second half of retries
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 1.
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 0x/0x caddy
Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.54
SCSI device sda: hdwr sector= 512 bytes. Sectors= 1818624 [888 MB] [0.9
GB]
and hangs at that point.
Do any of you have the Megaraid controller working with the 2.2 kernel
series?
Is there a workaround for this problem?

You said this was a Sony CDU-31, right? If I remember correctly this isn't
an ATAPI/IDE drive at all, it's one of the old pre-ATAPI proprietary ones.
So the device isn't /dev/hdc it's /dev/sonycd or some such. Here's a clip
from /usr/src/linux/drivers/cdrom/cdu31a.c that may help:
/*

* The Sony interface device driver handles Sony interface CDROM
* drives and provides a complete block-level interface as well as an
* ioctl() interface compatible with the Sun (as specified in
* include/linux/cdrom.h). With this interface, CDROMs can be
* accessed and standard audio CDs can be played back normally.
*
* WARNING - All autoprobes have been removed from the driver.
* You MUST configure the CDU31A via a LILO config
* at boot time or in lilo.conf. I have the
* following in my lilo.conf:
*
* append="cdu31a=0x1f88,0,PAS"
*
* The first number is the I/O base address of the
* card. The second is the interrupt (0 means none).
* The third should be "PAS" if on a Pro-Audio
* spectrum, or nothing if on something else.
Hopefully this post counts as "fair use" and doesn't horribly violate the GPL.
When booting from floppy you could just type "linux cdu31a=0x1f88,0,PAS" at the
LILO prompt and perhaps the kernel will pick up your drive (with the SonyCD
module installed).

This is probably the killer line. Under 99% of the situations, you have
to at least escape the xon/xoff characters in the character set in use.
Set an option that tells pppd to use the 'asyncmap 0x000a0000' which
will escape those two characters in the data stream.

I see it did acknowledge it, so did mine, but then it hung up just like
yours is doing.
This is good info I think, so I'll leave it. But there should be a
window someplace to allow adding that option 'asyncmap 0x000a0000'
(without the quotes)

Hi folks,
Need an opinion. I'm in the process of designing a MP3 player. Since I'm
going to put it into a custom case that's low profile I want to have
onboard sound. I already have a AMD K6/166 available so a super 7 MB is a

here are the contenders:
Amptron PM9900
Matsonic/Eurone 5577S
PC-Chips M577
Alton MB5077
For all I know the last three could be the same board. Each claims to have
3D Direct Sound and again claim to be SoundBlaster 16 compatible.
What I'd like to know are a couple of things:
1) Any problems running any of these with Linux?
2) Does the Linux sound driver work the the onboard sound?
I'm willing to experiment but it would be a whole lot easier to choose if
someone with experience with any of these boards share some knowledge.

We've got a megaraid running SuSe Linux with Kernel 2.0.x and it works
fine. I recently tried to upgrade to 2.2.5 and I can boot from floppy
but I get the message after booting that the root file system
can't be mounted. I havn't got round to analysing this yet, by the
way we never managed to install an operating LILO, we boot from

For those that are interested, IBM has a web site with BETA drivers for
the ServeRAID SCSI controllers. Since I did NOT find this information
on a search I am posting it for all those who may need/want drivers for
these controllers or systems. The address to check is:
http://www.developer.ibm.com/welcome/netfinity/serveraid_beta.html
This was active as of 6/9/99. I hope this is helpfull for everyone.
