Al,

Here's what I did when I compiled my 2.2.9 kernel ...

compiled kernel with sound as a module. I had to also compile the joystick as a
module due to errors that (I *think*) arose due to IO conflicts when I tried
compiling the js in. I then compiled the modules and installed modules. This
created /lib/modules/2.2.9/ and all appropriate modules within. I did my lilo
thing and rebooted (this boot booted but it was ugly). Then I ran depmod -a as
root. This creates /lib/modules/2.2.9/modules.dep Rebooted again and poof
everything was good. It used my old conf.modules and isapnp.conf just fine.

I ran sndconfig when I first installed 6.0 and had minor problems that I fixed
by removing the entries for the soundcard from /etc/conf.modules and renaming
/etc/isapnp.conf (just to have the backup) and ran sndconfig again. I did this
two maybe three times and everything has been fine since.

I have been attempting to follow the UUSBD install and have continuously
failed. I have read much and learned little.

Everything seems to work as I go through the steps, but when I start
xwindows, it fails to find the mouse. I am probably missing something
simple that most already know and thus it is not in the install doc. Help
please.

Thanks,

Michael

Torsten,

Sounds reasonable. I haven't had any problems compiling anything (well y'know how
it is) with my 6.0 clean install but that doesn't mean anything really.

Currently, I'm running kernel-supported RAID and would like to move to
hardaware. I'd like to purchase the Adaptec ARO 1130-CA2 RAIDPort III device
which fits into the specialized slot in my SuperMicro S2DG2 mainboard.

Adaptec supports this card under NT and SCO Unix but washes their
hands at linux support.

If there is success using this device under Linux, I'd appreciate the
feedback.

I purchased a 3.2GB WD Caviar HD to upgrade my current 1.2GB clone
(running the RH6.0 distribution). However, on boot, I get an error
"fsck.ext2: Attempt to read blck from filesystem resulted in short read
while trying to open /dev/hdb3. Could this be a zero-length partition?"
At this point, I am dumped to a root prompt to fix the problem. The
weird thing is, there *is* no hdb3. The following is the partition
structure for hdb:

Ptn Size Type
hdb1 150MB Linux (bootable) intended for /
hdb2 (remaining) Extended holds logical ptns
hdb5 1.2GB Linux intended for /usr
hdb6 1.7GB Linux intended for /home
hdb7 66MB Linux swap

Why does the OS believe there should be a hdb3? Where can I change this?

The feature that you wanted is called Advance Power Management (APM) and you can
surely use APM to automatically power-off your machine when you 'halt' your
Linux. Check for apmd and APM support inside your kernel and make sure that your
BIOS does support APM too.

Someone already mentioned the keyboard shortcut to quit X
(Ctrl-Alt-Bkspace), so I'll see if I can help you get your mouse
working. I had this problem my first time trying to install RedHat
5.1. You should check to see if the connector your mouse uses to plug
into your computer is circular (ps/2) or somewhat rectangular
(serial). If it's the first, then you should run either
"xconfigurator", "FX86Config", or "SetupXF86" and when it asks you for
the device path, give "/dev/psaux" without the quotation marks. If
it's the second, then "/dev/mouse" should work, although I can't say
for certain as I've never tried to setup a serial mouse in linux. HTH.

The GPL per se does _not_ forbid that the program be used in a closed
environment. The use of a GPL'd program is free: obviously if the
environment is closed, then people have a much harder time to actually
make changes in their system, but that's not actually prohibited.

The trivial example of this is to make the binary available on a ROM
in a closed environment rather than in a more "normal" format. The only
thing that the GPL requires is that the sources be available - the fact
that it can then be extremely costly and hard to actually exchange the
binary is not really something that the GPL cares about.

(So for example, the ROM would need special tools to be burned, and
there might be other unrelated bootup code in the system like a BIOS
that are packaged in the same ROM that means that you're going to have a
hard time to re-create the ROM even if you physically could).

THAT can be a problem. Applications are a non-issue, but any
modifications done to Linux and any drivers would be implicated by the
Linux GPL. It doesn't matter that other people might not be able to
actually _use_ them without your closed hardware: the GPL source
requirement still holds.

Note that for most drivers, it's very easy to just create a module, and
just avoid the copyright issue that way. It's not something I (or
anybody else) really support, but in your case you wouldn't be able to
rely on other peoples support anyway, so I guess you don't much care.

For generic kernel changes, I don't really see any options. You'd have
to make the changs available if you distribute the binaries.

My problem is, to make them work at the same time. I tried hundreds

Nothing happens. The ISDN-Controller only works, when I use

Can I ask why you aren't running a 2.2 series kernel? The SMP performance
of these kernels is _much_ improved over the 2.0 series. The memory
management is better as well. I would absolutely recommend that you
try your tests over again with a new and improved kernel.

I just upgraded my Debian 2.1 system to kernel 2.2.1 and i'm having some
problems with my AWE64. I had it configured and functioning with
kernel 2.0.34, using isapnptools and the awe-drv patch. Here's what
happened:

I configured kernel 2.2.1 with PnP probing and the appropriate settings
for the AWE64 (including the lowlevel AWE32 drivers). Installed the new
kernel and rebooted. The card probed fine, irq, dma, and io were all setup
properly. During sound initialization the card was detected as a SB 16 and
it claimed that no AWE32/64 was present when it tried to load the AWE32
drivers. After boot-up a cat of /dev/sndstat produced nice results, which
showed that, unbeknownst to me, i had a SB 16 sitting in my computer. I
tried catting an au to /dev/audio and it ran for an appropriate amount of
time and then stopped, without outputting any sound. Similar results when
recording from the mic. I've verified that my speakers are in fact plugged
in and that they work. Any ideas? In particular anyone who might be
running the same setup as me, could you tell me how you've set it up?
Thanx in advance.

You lose. The connections are asymmetric. Here's a blurb from a 3Com
white paper on V.90
(http://www.3com.com/technology/tech_net/white_papers/500659.html)

========
Upstream and Downstream Channels: Asymmetric Operation

V.90 connections employ one bi-directional channel, upstream and downstream.
The V.90 analog modem's downstream (receive) channel is capable of higher
speeds because no information is lost in the digital-to-analog
conversion. The V.90 analog modem's upstream (send) channel goes through
an analog-to-digital conversion, which limits it to V.34 speeds.

is anyone having problems getting linux to see the parallel port on
this board? i have redhat 6.0 and cant get my parallel port zip drive
to work the rh install says "i cant find this device anywhere" and then
i noticed after i got rh installed that the reason it couldn't find the
zip was because it doesn't think i have a parallel port.
I think this is a problem with the board though because i also have a
win2k beta partition that gives me a conflicting device problem for the
parallel port yet the configuration shows nothing to be conflicting.
Yet win98,win95,dos have no problems with it
anybody else running redhat 6.0 or any linux on this board ?
