I'm new to Linux and have finally figured out most
things, the one problem I can't resolve on my own
is getting connected to the net..

I can't seem to get Caldera Edesktop 2.4 to recognize
my Usr V90 Robotics, I've tried all three available
port settings have tried minicom on all ports as well.

What happens is I get timeout in chat script from Kppp.
I've tried everything in the manual (increased timeout to
60 sec) to no avail.. :(

when you switch screens, does it work with any other device other then the
projector? Does it work with a monitor or a TV or whatever else will plug
into that slot. Are you sure Linux supports your other output method ? If
you are using a TV out, it's not unheard of for Linux to not be able to use
it.

4 MB of video ram should be enough for lots of colour. Is it possible
that you are running X in 8 bit colour mode? You might try adding the
server option -bpp 16 or -bpp 24 to your "xstart" script. (If it were
"startx", you could probably just say "startx -- -bpp 16".)

Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 15:10:28 -0500

Please forgive cross-post, I'm desperate.

Hi. I'm going absolutely crazy.
I've read all of this stuff, and I still can't get this D-Link going. It's
the endless "found link beat" "lost link beat" crisis in /var/log/messages.

Funny thing is, it's not just the D-link, it happened with a 3com 656
modem+adapter card too. Same exact thing.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2250CDT. I'm running RedHat 6.2, with pcmcia-cs
2.2.16-17 beta code (so the fixes aren't in the pcmcia upgrade yet). The
same exact thing happened with pcmcia-cs 2.2.16-3, and the whole 2.2.14-x
series. Ugh!

The card works perfectly at 10M or 100M in Windows 98 and 2000. I've tried
PCIC card mode and Cardbus/16-bit in the BIOS.

I downloaded a binary for fa_select, but it doesn't run (must not be
RedHat), and I downloaded the source for Jochen Friedrich's fix, but I don't
know C, and can't get it to compile. If I type "make fa_select" it errors on
"inline", and if I take the inline line out, it errors on the next line. I
also typed "gcc fa_select" but that obviously didn't help either.

What else... I've bounced it from irq 3 to 5 to 9 to 10, and none of those
worked.

Any ideas? I'm going mad. I don't care if the fix is slow, as long as it
works. I've put literally 30+ hours into this, and I've already switched
cards, and don't want to order another one.

If someone can send me a RedHat binary of fa_select, that might work, and
could you please tell me which init script to call it from?

Any help would be REALLY appreciated! Please cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Linux can use multiple serial ports on shared interrupts since version 0.96
(or even earlier).

Greetings, Holger

PS: You might have to use a soldering iron, one diode per port and one common

Subject: Upgrading to 2.2.16 with aic7xxx scsi controller
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 16:40:28 -0400

I have a working scsi controller in 2.2.14 kernel. Everything
works wonderfully.

When I try to boot my newly compiled 2.2.16 kernel, my computer
sees the scsi card, sees the disks on
the scsi card, sees the scsi emulation for my cdwriter, sees my
external zip (3 scsi controllers), sees the partitions on my
/dev/sda, but when it tries to check them in normal boot, it
hangs trying to check /dev/sda1. I am not sure if swap is
mounting, but swap is on that drive as well. This partition is
my /var partition, so I need it.

I tried making a new initrd image using mkinitrd --with=aic7xxx
/boot/initrd-2.2.16.img but no luck.

I tried using my 2.2.14 initrd image, but no luck.

Any ideas? I have aic7xxx support compiled into the kernel (no
module), and I believe that is why it sees the card during the
boot, and sees the disks and partitions on the disk, but still
not sure what is going on.

It would help to know if your modem is recognized as a serial port at boot.
<p>It would help to know what Kppp says after you push the&nbsp; "Connect"&nbsp;
button.&nbsp; Specifically, does it say that it is dialing?&nbsp; It should
first say "Modem Ready".&nbsp; If it says that then it has found the modem
and the problem may be with the set up for Kppp.&nbsp; If it doesn't say
"Modem Ready"&nbsp; it will probably say&nbsp; "Sorry, the modem is busy".&nbsp;
The modem is not busy, it is missing.
<p>In the second case (that the system can't find the modem), you should
download the current serial driver from:
<p><a
href="http://download.sourceforge.net/serial/serial-5.02.tar.gz">http://download.sourceforge.net/serial/serial-5.02.tar.g</a>
<p>It is installed simply.&nbsp; After down loading it to /usr/src
<p>(as root):
<p>cd /usr/src
<br>gzip -cd serial-5.0.2..tar.gz | tar xfv -
<br>cd serial-5.0.2
<br>make
<br>make install
<p>If you currently have an&nbsp; "rc.serial"&nbsp; file move it to a safe
place.&nbsp; Then reboot.&nbsp; If this works you should see the modem
listed as a serial port at boot.&nbsp; Make sure that Kppp is set up for
the right device&nbsp; "/dev/ttyS?, (don't use /dev/modem) and make sure
that the access privileges are correctly set&nbsp; (660) for that device.&nbsp;
And hope it works.&nbsp; I have a PCI 3Com/USR modem and this works OK
for me.

I would take a wild (but educated) guess that it might be the memory on
