OK, its not actually that hard. The address of the software described
below can be downloaded from: http://www.httptech.com/ppa/software.html

If you read the README file when you download, it explains the
installation procedure pretty well. One thing there is a problem with
however, is the configuration file (which you must make sure you save in
/etc). Comment out the paper size part of that file, and it should run
ok.

I am using the 820, and this works perfectly for me. Only prob is, for
people with printers like us, we can't print directly. Instead you have
to print using ANY program, doing print to file. This creates a
postcript file, then you can issue the command (as root unless you
actually change the privileges):

print file.ps

This will send the document to your printer, using the paper size and
settings specified when you initially printed to file.

Jez

PS Unfortunately it is true that the file does not yet support colour
printing.

David,

The board works perfectly fine here, and we have a mylex raid
controller in the system. However, we haven't tried the p2b-f
with a celeron yet.

Thanks,
Matt

For some reason (and I can't remember which setting) when I display the

Any ideas -

ASUS Mainboards are the best cloneboards you can get these days. I have
never had any problems with them. I don't know too much about the Intel
mainboards, but have replaced many ABIT mainboards. The city's
schoolboard will not buy anything else but ASUS boards because of warranty
issues and other advantages that way. Also, they seem to perform very
well too. Just make sure the board you buy has the latest chipset on it.
I'm not entirely sure, but I think that would be a BX chipset. Do not buy
a mainboard with a clone chipset, such as ALI, or OPTI.

I would buy a PII before a celeron because of the L2 cache difference, 512
on the PII as compared to 128 on the celeron. Celeron is cheaper, but you
get what you pay for. Speed wise, a PII is a lot faster.

By far the best IDE drives are Western Digital. I've had a few problems
with Maxtor platters sticking, so I wouldn't buy them. Fujitsu drives
aren't a bad alternative, but at the price of IDE drives these days, who
cares. Buy WD.

Yep! no problem with my Promise Ultra/33... I have a boot/system disk
running on the standard primary IDE controller & a CDROM on the
Secondary channel of the primary controller... I'm using the Ultra/33 as
a secondary controller, 1 8.4GB drive as master on primary channel, & 1
8.4GB drive on secondary master...using SW Raid-0 to combine the two
drives into 1 16 GB drive...works like a charm..

the key to scanner is SCSI. get a cheap SCSI card - isa, eisa and
slow-narrow is fine. get a SCSI scanner.

First off: do you think I'd bother to send to a newsgroup if I hadn't
already read the howto?

Second: I never got a reply in the first place.

Third: The HOWTO
(http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO-1.html#ss1.4) has no
specific info on that drive. That's why I'm asking for help on the
newsgroup. I've found HOWTOs to be woefully out of date in the past and
was looking for some _current_ information.

Sorry for the testy reply, but I really hate it when people assume that
I haven't done my homework before asking for help.

Yup. I use my old Connectix B/W par. port thingy and it works like hell.
It works even better under Linux that Windows 9x, the load on the system
reduced dramatically when I switched from Windows to Linux.

Look on www.crynwr.com for the kernel drivers.

Try 'Option "no_pixmap_cache"', maybe instead of and/or in addition
to your 'Option "no_bitblt"'.

Don't feel like a chump too long. We've found that although most of
our HP-6xx's have rarely made use of the color cartridge, they can and
will turn deaf, dumb, and mute right in the middle of printing out the
5:30 news scripts, at 5:24 pm of course, because the color cartridge has
decided its dead. Changing it for a new one is the *only* solution that
will restore the printer. Don't ask me why, when it doing a black text
only job, it has to stop, clean its nose, and check the color cartridge
while its at it, and die on the spot when it won't talk back to it.

Its a genuine PITA. I frankly don't have a quarter to call someone who
cares if the color cartridge is good or bad, when its in the middle of a
straight black print job. The printer shouldn't either until somebody
actually feeds it a color (other than black) related command.

The things are cheap, so they have the market, and the warranty is
excelent. Other makers should treat their customers as well. My other
concern is that its your nickle to call them to get an RMA.

Rrepeating sound like that is typically an IRQ problem. I was setting up
an Ensoniq Soundscape that I knew worked and it was doing the same thing,
even though I was using "legal" interrupts and setting up the card
correctly. I changed one of the interrupts from 10 to 7 and it now works
correctly. So, what you might try doing is playing around with changing
interrupts a little bit. Good luck.

Subject: LaserWriter IINT

I am trying to connect an Apple LaserWriter IINT (circa 1990) to
my Linux machine where I am running RedHat 5.2 . This is a
Postscript printer, and at one time it was connected to a
network of Sparc workstations. There is an RS-232 connector on the
printer, and I connected this with a cable to the parallel port on
my computer. Then I used the printer configuration utility and found
that the port was /dev/lp1 . When I try to run a test, the green
light on the printer flashes, but nothing comes out (Postscript and
ASCI tests). Upon startup, the printer creates a test page that looks
fine. There are a couple of switches on the printer that determine
the networking protocol, and I believe that they are set properly.
If someone has a similar setup, please check these printer settings
and tell me what they are. Any other ideas? Does anyone know how
to suppress the printing of the test page on startup?

Thanks,
Ashraf Youssef
