Hi,
this is an answer to another question but ....

==================
Hi
got a Duron 700 with Golden Orb fan (I know the gotcha: read on!) with a
MSI 6330 K7TPro, and a ATI Rage Fury MAxx on a 300W PS.
1) CPU is great: I love the price ($100) and the performance ;)
2) The mobo is damn good! The cpu got overheated: it reaches a
temperature of 117F (47C) and the mobo turned itself off. I dunno the
temp specs, but
added an extra case fan, I got temperature around 109F (43C). Now it is
stable. I suppose the temperature should be lower, around 87F (35C)
3) DO NOT GET THE GOLDEN ORB. It is an abortion of Fan. Get a better
one. It can crash the CPU. IMHO it does not provide enought cooling for
the cpu. I'm trying to get the Chrome ORB that is suppose to be better
(check out http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/corb/)
4) the video card .... well on paper is great and.... that is it! I got
problem with XFree 86 (I'm new with Suse6.4). Xfree86 3.3.6 hangs the
WHOLE system.
XFree 4.0 is partially working. XFree86 4.0.1 shows me some sugar....
but it is still not perfect. I got it up and runnig at the 24bpp
1600x1200 but I'm not
impressed/happy yet. I'm going to tweek the video frequency tho and I'll
see. I'm not a gaming fan either but for $130 I want something more
"friendly"....
On the side, the drivers for Windoze98 SUCKS big time. I wasn;'t able to
get them installed. I got the new one from ATI, but it looks like there
is a
conflict with the mobo drivers: after a whole sunny sunday missed
(something rare here in Boston) I got it to run properly only ONCE.Now
I'm trying to
figure out what is wrong:damn it I want it to get me more that 480x640 @
16 colors!

So here is my $0.02
If anybody else can give me other news on this systems please, speak up!

Thx

Max

I agree with the above - from your description it sounds like the monitor
is failing to sync correctly to the output from your video card becase one
of the horizontal or vertical scan rates is either too high or too low.

One thing you may find useful is to hold down Ctrl+Alt and hit keypad plus
and keypad minus which may cycle though various modes until you find one
that works.

The best thing though is to get the proper parameters for your monitor
(look it up on the web if you havn't got the spec) and either put them in
the CF86Config file in the appropriate place or use one of the GUI
X config tools and tell the tool those values when asked. The ones you
are looking for are the Vsync and Hsync (or Vscan and Hscan)
frequency ranges.

If you've already got current drivers, then check cable lengths.

You don't say what kind of SCSI bus you have (Ultra, Ultra-Wide,
Ultra-2, etc.)

Cable length limits for non-LVD busses can be pretty short:

Fast-SCSI: 6m
Ultra-SCSI: 3m
Ultra-Wide SCSI: 1.5m
Ultra2 (LVD): 12m
Ultra3 (LVD): 12m

If you mix different device types on a single bus, your overall limit is
the tightest limit of all the devices.

So, if you mix a Fast-SCSI device (like a CD-ROM) and an Ultra-Wide
device, your limit is 1.5m.

The reason you may only notice this under heavy load is because your
host adapter will switch bus speeds to the slower speeds when accessing
slower devices. Tehcnically, (in my hypothetical scenario) the limit is
6m when accessing the Fast-SCSI devices and 1.5m when accessing the
Ultra-Wide devices.

In reality, however, this doesn't really work. Even if the Ultra-Wide
devices are close to the host adapter on the bus, the terminators are
separated by more than 1.5m.

I found this exact problem on my system. I've got a 2940UW card with an
Ultra-Wide hard drive, a Zip drive, a CD-ROM and a tape drive.
Normally, they'd all work well together. But when accessing both the
Zip and hard drive at once (copying a lot of files), I'd start to get
errors and bus resets.

Moving the slow devices to a separate bus (I installed a 1542B card that
I had lying around) fixed the problem. Now the Ultra-Wide devices is on
a bus all by itself, where the cable is shorter than 1.5m. And the
three Fast-Wide devices are on a separate bus, where the cable is
shorter than 6m.

Hi, I've recently acquired a system that comes with a IGS 2010 video
chipset onboard. I have been unable to configure XFree to run it on
resolutions 640X480 and above as it would lock up my system. I can only
run X at a resolution of 320X240.

My system is running RedHat Linux 6.2 distribution.

Any help on where to get the SVGA driver would be appreciated.

The Kernel recognized the Printer corectly:

Well, since you returned the card, I guess it is a moot point, but did
you try the latest tulip driver? (The following courtesy of David A. De
Graaf) Full directions are at:
    http://www.scyld.com/network/updates.html

Briefly, you do this:

  # Transfer the Scyld PCI Netdriver package
  rpm -i ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/network/netdriver-2.0.src.rpm
  # Build the binary version for your kernel
  cd /usr/src/{redhat,TurboLinux}/
  rpm -bb SPECS/netdriver.spec
  # Now install it your newly built package.
  rpm -i --force RPMS/i386/netdriver-2.0-*.i386.rpm

And then in /etc/conf.modules (or modules.conf - sigh)
  alias eth0 tulip

Hi all,

I've just installed this brand new machine with Thunderbird 800, 256mb
ram,
Abit KT7 mainboard, Asus V6800 Deluxe (GeForce), 300W power supply, etc.
etc.
(no complete system, it's built from individually chosen parts).

Unfortunately, the bloody thing won't even boot a simple DOS, the only
thing
that came even halfway to running was tom's rootboot, after removing
everything
but the VGA card, floppy drive and a single 20gb eide drive (samsung).

BIOS settings are conservative, nothing fancy.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

I still have to try booting with a different VGA card, but I'm somewhat
bothered that this combination doesn't run immediately...

Greetings, Eric

If you deleted *all* the lines in /etc/X11/XF86Config, then nothing will
work!

The relevant section from my XF86Config is below; take a look at it,
take a look at yours, see if you can figure out what you need to change.

Section "Screen"
  Driver "SVGA"
  Device "Primary-Card"
  Monitor "Primary-Monitor"
  DefaultColorDepth 32
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 32
    Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "400x300"
  EndSubSection
EndSection

The virtual screen will always be 1024x768, even if I press
Ctrl-Alt-Minus and run at 400x300. There is no way around this. If you
run your monitor at 800x600, then make sure that "800x600" is the first
mode listed on the Modes line, and remove all references to higher
resolutions.

It turns out that this is a laptop pcmcia problem. The pcmcia scsi card
script, /etc/pcmcia/scsi.opt, mounted the cdrom writer to the default
setting of /mnt/cdrom.

The line in the /etc/pcmcia/scsi.opt script reads as follows:

MOUNTPT="/mnt/cdrom"

This line needs to correspond to the fstab setting.

Hope this helps someone else from spending many hours trying to find the
script.

MOUNTPT="/mnt/cdrom"

This line needs to correspond to the fstab setting.

Hope this helps someone else from spending many hours trying to find the
script.

Try to mount /dev/sda1. I had the same problems. Sometimes it works with 1
sometimes with 4. It seems to depend on what other modules you have allready
linked to your kernel when starting ppa.

We have a SDT-9000 DDS3 drive and the density code reported by mt doesn't seem
to mean anything. Even though it says DDS density, I still get 12+ GB on a
DDS3 tape.

AOpen makes a slim case which is slightly less 4" thick - not exactly
a pizza box but pretty close. I saw it on www.lilolinux.com for <$50.

Hello,

Let me recommend you the Epson Stylus Color 670. I have one and it works
very good on Linux, supporting upto 1440x720dpi (the same as under
Winblows). I have it installed on a Linux Box Running the follwing:

Debian 2.3 (woody) Kernel 2.4test7 MagicFilter Ghostscript 6.0 Samba
server

The Epson ESCP/2 printer language is well known, thats why they are that
well supported.

bye.

I haven't had luck installing a AOpen PA256Pro video card (Geforce 2 GTS
32MB DDR). I upgraded the X to 4.0.1. According to documentation the
X server should run using nv_drv.o. But on my machine X server complains "no
device found". The error message shows the correct driver "nv" has
been loaded. What went wrong? Thanks for your help.
