Any chance you are using the frame buffer (fb) for displaying text? If so,
you may have picked a mode that your video card doesn't like. Trying turning
if off for now. Otherwise, I haven't a clue. Good luck.

I have a UMAX 1200S that installed easily and works well on an Advansys Ultra SCSI
card. I had to adapt the cable of the scanner to the card (25 pin to 50 pin SCSI), but
that was no problem.
I would recommend this combination. Advansys SCSI cards seem to be well-supported by
Linux, and reasonably priced.

Hi, did you ever get this answered? If not, I've got some experience
setting up Netgear Routers and can probably help you out. Matter of fact, I
had a whole long detailed reply all typed up when I thought maybe I ought
to make sure you'd not already gotten the help you needed. :-)
Matter of fact, we HIGHLY recommend the Netgear routers to all our ISDN
customers. :-)

Subject: Can't print; /dev/lp0 not detected; procfs?
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 10:31:16 -0500
When using the RedHat 5.2 printtool, I get a message saying that no devices
were detected at /dev/lp0 or lp1 or lp2 and that there may be a hardware
problem. This has prevented me from using my Epson ActionLaser 1500, which
is HP III cpmpatible.
My parallel port works- I can use my zip drive. In my dmesg listing, I see a
message saying the parallel port is detected, but in order to enable
interrupt driven processes I need to:
use procfs
What is this and can it be the solution to my problem? Just what is the
printtool looking for? Thanks for your help.

I have a Gateway 19" vx900 monitor and STB Velocity 128 video card. I can't
seem to xconf a desktop that is sized to just fit the screen. Switching to
higher resolutions helps, but I still have to move the cursor to the edge to
see the edges of the desktop. The HOWTO's are very technical and I can't
seem to find what I need. Please help.

I have a new Tekram 390F SCSI card and need, under Slackware Linux, to
install the card with a Seagate 4.5 GB UltraWide SCSI-3 drive and
Seagate 2.0 GB SCSI-2 drive.
I tried to use the Slackware v2.0.35 tekram.s driver, but upon booting,
the bootdisk showed: '0 scsi hosts detected'.
Anyone got a working driver or know what is needed to install this card
correctly?

Hello Everybody,
I posted a few days ago about a problem with during CD ripping. Well, I
narrowed the problem down to BladeEnc. I get "Unable to handle kernel
paging request at virtual address" error on the first track BladeEnc trys to
encode. I also get "Call Trace", "process Kswapd", "kernel Panic VFS", &
LRU block list corrupted" messages among other things. If the machine
didn't hard lock I would cut and the paste the entire thing.
This is running on a P120, 32mg ram, Matrox Mystique 2mg, Sound Blaster 16,
4X Eide CDrom, Adaptec 1502e (with microtek scanner), and 6.4G Quantum
bigfoot.
Any help is appreciated.

I know there has been a lot of discussion on which chipset is better
Voodoo3 or TNT2. I have decided to go with the ASUS V3800 VTR TNT2.
It's an awsome card, video I/O, 32MB RAM, AGP 4X. Anyway has anyone
used this card, or if not will the Xfree drivers on nVidia's site work
with this card? Any comments would be appreciated.

Subject: Hibernation on IBM ThinkPad i14xx?
Date: 15 Jun 1999 02:41:18 GMT
I can't seem to get my i1410 ThinkPad to hibernate under
Red Hat 6.0. It hibernates just fine under Win98 (dual
boot via LILO). I can use either apm or the hot keys
to enter standby, though. And I can get a summary of
the battery status.
When I hit Fn+F12 (hot key for hibernate), I get the
following messages in /var/log/messages:
=======
localhost kernel: hda: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady
SeekComplete DataRequest Error}
localhost kernel: hda: status error: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
Localhost kernel: hda: drive not ready for command
localhost kernel: ide0: reset: success
=======
If anyone has succeeded in getting hibernation to work
on the i-series ThinkPads, I'd be grateful to hear about
it. (Yes, I know folks have gotten this to work on some of
the older ThinkPads).

Subject: Changing system boxes

Hi-
I'm going to be moving my Linux drive to a new box and wondering if
anyone would recommend a particular method. I am currently running
RedHat 5.2, recompiled to kernel 2.2.7, dual-boot with Win95 on a
PII-233 with 128MB RAM. The system has two hard drives, the master is a
10GB with Win95, and the slave (only in spec) is a 4.3GB with Linux.
I've just finished a new AMD K6-2 350 box that I want to move Linux over
to, and leave the Win box for my wife. Should I go ahead and recompile
the new kernel based on the AMD's hardware, and just floppy-boot into
the new system in order to switch kernels once the system is up and
running? Or is there a better way?
Any ideas from experience will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance for your help!

sam,
I'm in the same boat as you. Though I haven't bought my dimension, yet,
and probably won't until august, I have looked into Linux compatability.
Everything seems compatable except the DVD. I'm not sure about the sound
cards, but that's another thread in this newsgroup ("seems like a stupid
question"). I suggest you go to
http://support.dell.com/support/system.asp?sysid=DIM_PNT_P03_XPS_T___ ; it
tells the specs of the system i've looked at.
UNRELATED: there's rumored to be a PIII price drop in june; you might
want to wait for that.
Please email me if you find that anything is incompatable. Also, please
email me when you get the computer to tell me if anything does/n't work.
Thanks,
Andrew de los Reyes

Try booting with just one DIMM. If that does not work, try the other
DIMM. If that does not work, release your vid card, then place it in the
slot again. Remove all unnecessary cards (i.e. audio, network,
SCSI,...). Check that your monitor cable is properly connected to the
vid card. Try again. It should succeed. If not, test the vid card and
DIMMS in a friend's box.
This should suffice to locate the error (if everything's working, but
not with your box, it may even be the motherboard).

well, normally I'd say that too, but gcc is a *very* complex piece of
software, so I'll help him.
The basic command is gcc -c <source> [-o <object>]. Write a makefile
like this one:
<--snip here----->
EXECUTABLE = ising
OBJECT = Ising.o
SOURCE = Ising.c
OPTIONS = -O
LIBRARIES = -lm
GCC = cc
$(EXECUTABLE): $(OBJECT)
$(GCC) -o $(EXECUTABLE) $(OBJECT) $(LIBRARIES)
$(OBJECT): $(SOURCE)
$(GCC) -c $(OPTIONS) $(SOURCE)
<--eof--->
you can then just issue 'make' and it will compile and link the program.
Check other one's Makefiles to learn more. Then you might want to print
the gcc manpage and read it trough.

Maybe parport support is compiled as a module. Look in your syslog with
tail -f /var/log/messanges
then (on another console) do
echo "Hello, World\!" > /dev/lp1
and check if something about loading the module is written to the
syslog.
(You terminate tail -f with CTRL-C...)
