Dual Slot1 motherboards will do the job. Simply use PPGA Celerons
with Slot1-->Socket370 adaptors. Get a pair of adaptors which are
prewired for dual.

I can tell you that it isn't LILO which is propmting you for a new mode,
thats the linux kernel which has recieved a bad mode from lilo. I have no
idea why lilo wont accept vga=789 at the prompt (I know it works for me), but
using 0315 as a lilo option I don't think works, you'd need to try "0x315".

Hope this helps,

I've got a machine with an ensoniq audiopci 1370 under redhat 6.0
I've installed the driver for it and can play sounds just fine.
However, after turning on record mode onthe mixer I can't seem
to get any sound out of my microphone.

I have an sblive! card which i load the 2.2.5 modules with no sweat,
blammo and it recorded. Does anyone know what I need to do to get the
audiopci mic to work?

Thanks!

I have recently obtained an old ISA nic to put into a 486 machine which
I am using as a linux email server. Since installing the card, I get the
message Boot from Network Y/N. Pressing N will allow the machine to boot
normally, however this is incredibly irritating as this machine
monitorless and only powered during office hours.

Using a boot disk bypasses this message however with the machine being a
486 it increases the bootup time enormously.

Could some kind soul please advise me on how to disable this message?

Any help is eagerly awaited.

I replaced my Rockwell PCI modem with an ISA modem, one with jumpers to set
the com port and IRQ. This is the solution I came up with after wrestling
with the Rockwell for about a week.

The Rockwell modem will not work with Linux, to my knowledge. (due to the
poor design of the modem, not Linux) Hardware manufacturers have begun to
believe that everyone runs Windoze.

Subject: Serial console - Sys msg, but no login!

OK. Let me calm down for a sec, <g>

I'm trying to set up a serial console. First I'll go over approximately
what I've done so far.

Have a null-modem cable from com2 on NT box to ttyS1(com2, of course) on
linux box.
Enabled serial console support in the kernel and recompiled.
I've got CRT open in NT waiting on com2.

Modified /etc/inittab and added a line for the serial port, i.e.
S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 57600 vt100
I have tried many variations of this such as getty -h and DT38400 for the
speed, and agetty, etc. None have worked.

Also found I didn't have a /etc/gettydefs file, so I added the appropriate
lines to that.
I also type Linux console=ttyS1,<SPEED> at the boot prompt... (Could that be
locking up the port so it's not able to open it for a login??) The
suggestion doesn't seem to be the case as even when I don't add anything at
the boot prompt, I still get no login prompt on the serial.

In any case, I usually get the error message INIT: Id "S1" respawning too
fast: disabled for 5 minutes. but other than that, I can't recall any other
one. But if I hit Alt+F9 I believe it is, I see an error message (I think
this is with agetty, pardon me for being vague, I'm losing braincells here)
with the tail end looking like "ioctl Input/Output Error".

Alright, I'm spent - I think that's all the info I can give. If anybody can
give me any pointers here, I will deeply appreciate it. This is driving me
nuts! hehe Thanks again!

I think you probably have to upgrade X.
Easier to go over to RedHat-6.0 --
the X there (SVGA) supports Riva TNT.

Subject: Performance Opinions? Xeon PII vs 2 x PIII
Date: 15 Jun 1999 21:33:46 -0700

Friends,

A little research reveals that cost of a dual pentium III
system is roughly that of a single pentium III Xeon system. For
administrative reasons, these are the only possibilities. Which should
I prefer?

My usage profile: I usually run a number of single-threaded
applications over X; in general, only one of them expresses heavy load
at a time, though, of course there is occasional overlap. Of course X
is always running the background, along with all the other fat in RH6.

A quick glance through some available benchmarks suggests that
the Xeon offers roughly 10% improvement in the above scenario.

Many thanks,

Alex Russell

by the very first selection of monitors in redhat 6.0. The only thing is
that when I run Xwindows, the desktop is humungous. How do I get the
desktop to simply the same size as the screen? I tried to use windows

I think you need to make sure that the "Virtual" entry in your XF86Config file
is set to the same as your screen resolution. The Virtual entry defines the
'virtual desktop' which can be larger than your viewable area. Setting it equal
to your maximum screen resolution (mode) should help.

[AFAIK] Minimum = DDS3 (DDS2=2~8Gb, DDS=1.3~2Gb) for 10 Gb+ (he did say '+' :-)
TEMPORARILY...
If you need to save everything in order to 'experiment',I'd suggest a 10+Gb Hard
Disk Drive (!) in the interim;

o Cheap these days, buy two!.
o On-line access to backed-up data!.
o Fast backup!.
o Use some of it for swap!
o Set the root f/s up in lilo.conf, = emergency boot!
        (only need to change
        /backupdisk-mnt-pnt/etc/fstab afterwards)!
o Bootable backup is better than _NO_ backup!
