Any card based on the AIC-7895 chipset should work fine. There may be
three models of the 2940UW (which uses the 7895, unless I'm seriously
mistaken) because of different port configurations; e.g., different
number and type of internal and external ports.

Actually, I think that Linux supports any card using a 78xx chipset.

I can tell you that the Tyan S1836DLUAN with an integrated AIC-7895
works out of the box with Linux, using the obvious driver; it's
something like "aic78xx".

I have had a Linksys Etherfast PCI card in my system for a few years
now. It always worked fine - the system is triboot (linux,NT,W95). I
got a cable modem and out of paranoia upgraded the kernel to the latest
version from Redhat (2.2.16-3). Everything is fine BUT the ethernet
card basically went dead. The tulip driver loads fine, but there is no
response to pings to a neighbor machine. The hardware still worked as
verified by boot another OS.

Here's the weird thing. In trying to solve the problem I discovered
that if I ran ntop (the ethernet sniffer) the card suddenlly worked.
Tipped off by that I tried loading the driver, initiating the network
start and did a "/sbin/ifconfig eth0 -promisc" and sure enough the card
works fine! It appears to be very reproducible. Before I put this in
my network startup file, anyone have a similar experience? Anyone have
a clue as to why this might be?

Any hints would be appreciated.

Fdisk /mbr only wipes out lilo if it was installed on the master boot
record (i.e /etc/lilo contains "boot=/dev/hda"). If lilo was installed
on a partition, which seems to be the case (i.e /et/lilo.conf
contained "boot=/dev/hdaX"), you actually does not have to remove lilo.

If for example you had linux and lilo installed on /dev/hda2 and now
want to have windows installed on /dev/hda1 (C:) make sure that
only /dev/hda1 is flagged as bootable.

The bootable/active flag can be changed with the active command in
linux fdisk.

Hi folks

I am trying to install Linux on a system at work. I have no problems
installing the thing. Main problem is the video which is i810. Onboard
video.

I tried intel solution and used the agpgart module. It says AGPIOACQUIRE
ERROR or something very similar and fails. XFCom video server does not
run
complaining the same. Has anybody succeded in making it run. For various
reasons, I can't open the box. [ mainly beacuse of regulations.]

Is there any use in trying different distributions. Redhat and Mandrake
both
do the same. Run at 300x200 resol 8bpp col depth.

If any one of you had success in running it could you tell me how you
managed it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Sreekant

Ciao Pietro,

Hai bisogno di un patch per il kernel per fare funzionare questa scheda
con Redhat 6.2. Continuo in inglese cosi' gli altri ci capscono.

The patches can be found at www.melware.de. You're looking for the
latest eiconctrl-xx package & isdn4k-utils package. Together these will
get you going.

Best regards

Sounds like the pc_keyb.c problem I have had... Presario with
USB keyboard in this case.. look in your syslog for keyboard
controller jammed messages... I'm currently trying out a proposed
fix that inserted an mdelay to keep it from hitting on the
  keyboard status too quickly.

You shoulg be able to find it with a google.com search on
   pc_keyb.c and mdelay

Hope this helps (mine hasn't hung yet), Michael

Does the drive work with any other operating system? I have the same
CD-writer on an Adaptec 8945 card and it works with Linux; however, when
I first got it it wouldn't work and one of the lights was continually
flashing, which the Plextor tech support people said essentially meant
'someone dropped the box in transit, please send me back for repairs'.
They arranged a free collection and replacement for the CD-writer and
the new one is fine.

I'd suggest contacting Plextor to see if your drive has the same
problem.

What linux distribution? You need to have agpgart loaded: '/sbin/insmod
agpgart'. If it's not loaded, you will get an AGP or GART error. If
you have a distribution with rpm, get the I810Gtt rpm and do 'rpm
--rebuild I810Gtt*'

I feel your pain man. I got mine working RH62, but not following
Intel's bogus instructions. Also, another guy here at work got one of
these stupid boxes, and had a Mandrake 7.1 CD, and was up and running
with no troubles... go figure.

Go to Redhat and read their advisory on the i810. My machine is a Dell,
and they had an example XF86Config (which was crap, but a good starting
point) and a working agpgart module. I also had to upgrade the kernel
to .3-16, per RedHat instructions.

Another guy a few weeks ago posted a rather long step-by-step he
followed to make this work. I don't know which NG it was in, would have
been this one, or linux hardware, or alt.os.linux, or something like
that. You might want to have a search at dejanews.

Good luck man. You'll need it. It does work though.

Not shown at all? That's differnet than my problem. In my case, I
think the kernel is treating the ZIP drive as a regular IDE hard-disk,
and gets confused (and hangs during bootup!) if there is no media in
it. But if the media is there, it works just fine.

Is there a fix available for the DGA bug in th OpenGL part of nvidia's

The bug can be best seen in Quake 3, where the mouse moves choppily (I
can't find a better word for it), stopping at short intervals. This does
not occur until you run it for a fec seconds (half a minute or so).
Maybe for people who don't play q3 a lot this does not mater, but for
people like me, who play competitively, it's unacceptable. I have been
trying for some time now, to eliminate Windows from my box, but I always
stop at this point, I have to keep it, ot be able to play Q3.

I have a computer with Linux Mandrake 7.0 and Win98 on it. Everything was

my bios. This has caused my sound card to "disappear" in LINUX. It quit

the port is busy. Anyone know of a way around this????? I really don't want
to have to change my bios every time I boot into LINUX.
