Hi!
I was wondering if anybody has gotten one of those mp3 players to
work under linux (download files to the player). I can't seem
to find any help on the web about this.

Subject: Help needed with Diamond PCI Modem
Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 18:32:57 +0100
Has anyone managed to get a Diamond SupraExpress 56i PRO PCI internal modem
working under Linux. The system I am using is a Pentium 150 with 64Mb RAM, a
4.3 E-IDE Hard Disk, ATI Rage Pro Graphics Card and a Soundblaster AWE 64. I
am running RedHat 5.2, with kernel version 2.2.2.
The modem is using IRQ 11 and has a base address of 03e8 (Hex), but I am
unable to get the modem to respond. I would be very appreciative of any help
or advice anyone could give me, even if it is just a recommendation for a
new modem.
Thanks in advance

Subject: A good AT MB for Cel Processor

Hello everyone. I am planning on putting a second box together for
Linux. I have a friend giving me an old box (486DX2-50 Fullsize tower AT
case) with 3gig SCSI, CD-Rom, floppy, Sim ram, and a really old vid card.
I know this would run Linux fine, but I would like something a little more
powerful. The box might end up as a file server or web server. Anyway, I
am planning on using the Drives and such from the old box and just
upgrading the MB, CPU, Ram, and vid. Since my funds are limited, I have
decided a Cel 300A or 333A would be my best bet for a cheap upgrade. The
problem with this is that I need a AT board. Looking around, I have found
the Alton 726 BXcel. This looks like a good board. It has the following
specs.
Alton 726 BXcel AT
3PCI 2ISA 1AGP
3DIMMs
233to500 CPU 66/100 bus
3D SOUND Hardware Monitoring for CPUs
My question is, are there any other AT boards out there that are
recommendable. Is this a decent board? Is there anything I sould look
out for, other then the chip set for the sound? And any other general
information you can spare. would like to keep the total upgrade to around
$250. I have a 15" Sony monitor and was planning on 64MB PC-100 DIMM and
a ATI Xpert 98 8MB vid card (looks to be well supported). So that only
leaves about $140 or so for a MB/CPU combo.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any information will be
greatly appreciated!
Philip Dean

It just works. There is no _performance_; being K56Flex
modem it connects at around 45000bps while my former (also 100% reliable)
V.34 modem could not climb above 26400bps: my line is terribly noisy
(as you can hear ;-) noise level at around "20" vs. regular "3".
AFAIK this insensitivity to the noise is an advantage of K56Flex protocol.
You set port and interrupt jumpers, you plug the modem in... that's it.
Linux even determines the interrupt I set (if I change the jumper from
IQR5 to say IRQ6, then the next time I boot up everything is working again).
Cool!
Best,
a.
PS. Make sure that you want K56Flex, not x2! Who knows whether
everything's standard V.90 now...

If you don't mind the bleeding edge, consider getting a card
based on the Trident 4DWave chips. Trident Microsystems has
provided The ALSA Project with "first cut" GPL'd drivers
(MIXER & PCM devices only) & documentation for their 4DWave
(DX & NX) PCI audio chipsets
(http://www.tridentmicro.com/HTML/products%20folder/audio.htm)
and these drivers are now included in the standard ALSA
releases (use 0.3.1 or later). ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound
Architecture) is the next-generation sound system intended
to be standard in the next stable kernel series, and now
available separately from http://www.alsa-project.org. ALSA
is undergoing intense development lately, so those averse to
getting under the hood should wait for a stable release.
Initial evaluations from those who have tried these cards
have been positive. Inexpensive cards based on the older DX
series of chips are available from web-retailers; NX cards
are still rare, but supposedly sound great and are available
with digital I/O. Even if the hardware were just average,
vendor-written drivers released under the same license as
the kernel would put these cards in a class by themselves.
This is an opportunity to show hardware manufactures that
GPL'd Linux driver support pays off; what we buy today
determines what will be available tomorrow.

There is a program called something like a2ps or anything2ps. That one
is able to convert text to postscript with pretty-printing.

That stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK. Cyan, Magenta and
Yellow are used by color printers to produce any color on white paper
just like Red, Green and Blue are used to produce any color on a black
monitor. Better printers also use blacK to get better colors and save
ink.

So, there I sat, happily plinking away in my KDE window. I needed to
leave the room and decided that I would log off. Doing so, my Linux
machine obediently charged toward respawning kdm an BOOM, purple
vertical lines on the screen and a locked up machine. Ack! I thought.
I guess it's time to drop back and kick. So I hit the reset button
expecting to be told all about how a check is being forced since I
didn't shut down correctly. However, as I watched the machine go
through the BIOS and start to ramp up I notice that I don't have LILO:
on the screen, but I get LI and a locked up machine! Now the box that
has been my trusted companion for the last year is suddenly taken ill.
I don't understand exactly what's going on.
Ok, so here are the facts:
The crash was sudden. Although I had seen a similar crash in the
past, a reboot and patient
wading through fsck usually fixed it.
The LI portion of LILO: shows up whether booting from the hard drive
or a bootable floppy.
No hardware changes have been made for at LEAST 6 months.
Has anyone else seen this type of problem before? I'm fairly certain
that it is some type of hardware issue, but I just can't seem to finger
it out.
Thanks in advance,

Definitely don't buy the P8 - it's a WinPrinter. I had one and dumped it
for a Brother HL-1040 that does work at 300dpi under Ghostscript. Any HP

Hi:
I bought a Redhat 5.2 and it seems cannot support
SiS 6C215 card for 800x600-16bit color mode( at least I don't know

So do I need to update my Redhat to 6.0, or just download some
kind of patches to fix this problem?
Any comment will be greatly appreciated.

I am having problems finding an ethernet card that will work in my

Bottom line: The only IRQ I have left availible in my system is IRQ 5.
Does anyone know a PCI Ethernet card that can use (or be configured to

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

This is only my opinion:
they have amd k6/2 - 350 for $69 (less than a Celery 333)
they have 64MB PC-100 DIMM for $50
choose any M/B with 1MB cache for around $75
the ATI card is $51

Subject: Network Card Configuration Problem
Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 21:10:13 GMT
I have RedHat 6, and during the installation I didn't do the LAN
configuration, but now that I've learned a bit of Linux, I do want to
use my 3com Etherlink XL 3c900 Combo card. The problem is whenever I try
to run ifconfig with eth0 (I have been told that this should be my
ethernet card) it errors out saying that there is no such device, and
indeed there IS no such device in /dev. I have created an interface
named eth0 using netcfg. What I am trying to do is configure my network
card, so I can use another computer as a proxy server. I already have
the proxy stuff configured, because I can do it in windows. So, does
Linux even know I have a network card? If not, how can I "let it know"?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
