I have read the CD-Writing HOWTO, and seen the list of support CD writers,
but there was no assessment of specific devices.
Are there any writers that are known to work better than others with
Linux? Also, is there any significant difference between SCSI and IDE
writers?
Thanks for any advice.

Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 15:35:16 +0200
I installed the new Kernel 2.2.10 some days ago and cant go on using my
old OSS .
Therefore I installed the driver modules , that came with the kernel .
The problem is , that my soundcard needs software initialization .
At the moment I have to boot Dos and go on over Loadlin to get my card
running .
The source Code for the module looks as if could do the initialization ,
but im absolutely not into coding .There is no Documentation provided
with the kernel for my soundcard , so I dont know the commandline
parameters for the module .
Does anyone know , how to get the card running , or where I can get the
Documentaion for the driver module ?
Thanks , Thomas

I am thinking about purchasing a Tecmar NS 20 tape drive, but haven't
had much of an opportunity to compare it to other, similar tape drives.
This is the 10/20 gig Travan.
My system is (will be, after I install Mandrake) a dual-boot Win 98 and
Linux, Pentium III with 13 gig EIDE hard drive. It would be nice to be
able to back up from either Win or Lin.

I get /dev/hdc is invalid block device. My cdrom is the only device
connected to my 2nd ide slot on the mother board. I am using kernel 2.0.29
I used my cdrom to install linux but ever since then I have been unable to
use it. Any help?

Assuming you have indeed switched off the screenblankers in your BIOS,
Linux kernel and KDE, only the X blanker is left. That can be disabled
with 'xset' I believe it's 'xset s off', but take a look at the manpage
first.

Besides the mentioned Xfree3.3.3.1 driver (www.xfree86.org), NVidia has

Whoa is me. I have had some success but many failures. I have purchased a
number of brighty colored manuals from large book store chains. I am
learning but slowly.
I have RH5.2 on an Abit BX6 mobo, 64 meg, Celeron 300a stable at 450mhz.
Promise UDMA/66 card WD 41800 18gig HD udma4 on primary master, 3 gig WD
udma2 on primary slave. Matrox Mellinia G200 AGP 8 megs. CDrom and HPRW on
mobo controller.
Used the Mini Howto to enable the drives on the Promise card by passing
(ide2=0xb000,0xb402 ide3=0xb800,0xbc02) to the kernel while booting off a
floppy. Then was able to install and am running Linux now using this method.
Am using 2.0.36-7 kernel but cannot get to any config to enable or patch to
recognize Promise card, hell I don't know enough to determine exactly what I
have to do to get it working so LILO will dual boot with win98. I dnlded
2.0.37 but when I use the make program I get
"`No targets. Stop.'
The former means that you didn't provide any targets to be built on the
command line, and make couldn't find any makefiles to read in. The latter
means that some makefile was found, but it didn't contain any default target
and none was given on the command line. GNU make has nothing to do in these
situations. "
Whats next.
I have got PPP to dial and logon to my provider but I cannot access any of
the web using ping or Netscape etc. Its like no DNS servers are configured
but as far as I can tell they are.
I have had some success, I fooled around for days trying to get the Matrox
card to work with X windows, then I managed to upgrade to the latest version
of X86 and finally that is working.
I used rpm to install and configure KDE it is working fine.
Any help and suggestions will be appreciated . I am going to install Linux
on the laptop I have an extra removable 2 gig hd I am going to use. It is a
Gateway LS2300.
Help Me Rhonda or anyone.

According to John Hagen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Just find any old 486 desktop with a slimline case. Dell and Compaq
sold millions of these, and they have flodded the used market. You
can pick up a used one for about $20. You should be able to get to
10bT ethernet cards from the same "scrap" dealer for about $5/ea.
That's a complete system for about $30. Btw, 16 megs is plenty of ram
and you can actually run the whole system from a floppy that way.
With 8 megs of ram, you will need a HD because you'll probably need an
itsy bit of swap space.

Netwinders and bisquit PCs are very cool, but why spend upwards of
$500 when you can do all that you need with a sub $50 machine?

I just installed a SB 16 PNP. Some things I learned in the process. If you
use the OSS software. /etc/isapnp.conf needs to be disabled. Plus sound
should not be compiled into the kerrnal. The other thing is you need to
check to see if you sound card is supported by OSS.

The TekRam DC-390 (without any suffix) uses the Tekram driver.

You should use the NCR53C8XX driver (the NCR53C7XX,8XX driver has fallen into
disrepair, and doesn't support the latest chips in the NCR/Symbios/LSI Logic
family that the NCR53C8XX driver does -- even on scsi chipsets it did support,
ie an NCR53C810, it had stopped working for me, 2-3 years ago).
Evidently the newer line of TekRam boards (the DC-395 family) use a new chipset
that isn't in the Linux kernel yet, but is provided at the TekRam web site.

3d rage pro, or Rage LT Pro
Im asking because the LT pro is for laptops and LCD screens generally, and i
know to get it runnig on that, I use linux ver2.2's framebuffer to start up
in the desired mode (1024x768) at the desired resolution (16bpp) and then
starting the XF86_Mach64 server works a charm.

First solution: Step over to FreeBSD. There can be as many busses/devices as
you like. Using the CAM system, devices are created on the fly or can be
wired down. (So your cd devices would be known as cd0 - cd13)
Second solution: Step over to kernel version 2.2.X.

Gteetings all
I am running SuSE Linux, kernel ver. 2.0.36 . My system got shut off
accidentaly. I am now having a problem with block errors during boot up
on hda1, which is my root partition.
It will state during boot up that I have a bad block and that I should
run "fsck" manually. Which I do. It says that block 40893 has an error
but wants to know if it should ignore it. If I tell it no it will quit
and do nothing further. If I tell it yes, it will skip that problem and
go to other
items if they exist. This happens about every other boot up.
Can any one point me to where I can find a HOWTO or other instructions
that will tell me how to fix this? (Mabey someone can tell me how to fix
this.)
The only thing that I can think of to do is to try and reload my root
partition only. I run a 500 MB root"/"(hda1), a large /usr partition
(hda2), a large /home partition (sda1).
I would be greatful for any replies
