Hi, Eric---I've got an SiS3626 4M in one of my boxes and just about went
crazy getting it to work.
I spent countless hours reconfiguring it and was especially frustrated
because it is one of the
"supported" chips. Finally found some info on it telling me how to manually
edit the XF86Config file.
# Device configured by xf86config:
Section "Device"
Identifier "kidvid"
VendorName "SiS"
BoardName "6326"
# VideoRam 4096
Option "no_linear"
Option "sw_cursor"
Option "fast_vram"
dacspeed 90 #Insert clocks line here if appropriate
I left out some options which didn't apply in my case. If you're
interested in more info, contact me.
You may have a slightly different board than mine, Eric, but give those
values a try.
Good Luck--- Bob "NetNut" Murray

Kernel Panic means that the error is so severe that the OS can't continue
to run. On a bootdisk it would typically mean that you haven't included a
device driver for an essential part of the system. For example the boot
device must be linked into the kernel since modules are not available
until later in the boot process.
> One method is mkbootdisk and the other is to copy the kernel

It is possible to install a system and then compile a custom kernel that
doesn't include the original installation media. Maybe your kernel
doesn't have floppy support since you boot directly off the SCSI bus?

/dev/cdrom points at /dev/ ? Huh, well, ummm, all that my cd rom
points to is the mount point, which for me is /dev/hdc => /mnt/cdrom.
Is it supposed to point to something else in /dev/ ? Please, enlighten

Thanks for the tips, Gerald. Will try the one of plugging the headset
in. If you could let me know about the /dev/ stuff I would really
appreciate it. That could very well be the problem.

Hey Boys,
I've been into the linux scene for a few months now and interestingly
enough, I hear of this problem quite frequently with the Red Hat 6.1
distribution. But closer to home, it has happened to me --on every
installation I perform --with any possible (and legitimate) hardware
configuration.
I have come across a simple way to remedy the problem. Forgive me if the
answer seems absurdly simple, but I often find that the most difficult
questions have the most obvious answers.
When working from the X desktop, whatever desktop environment, open a
terminal emulator like gnome terminal, xterm, etc.
log in as the superuser, and from the command prompt type:
/usr/sbin/setup
Or if you're not afraid of the big black screen, it's easier on your
computer to just hit CTL+ALT+F2, login as root from the new virtual
console, and use the same command.
If memory serves me correctly, this is the command which directs you to a
setup program for hardware configuration and the specification of device
drivers for any hardware upgrades. --note that this setup runs completely
independent of the installation process. I'ts not the same.
You'll see a colored screen appear as soon as you hit the carriage return
following the command that I just listed. You'll find a dialog box on the
center of the screen with a list of options. You are interested
specifically in the sound card configuration option. (ex- If you'd like
to change up your display properties, go to the x-configuration option
from the same dialog box. I's a really user friendly tool for newbies.)
Now you'll get the chance from within the soundcard configuration to
specify your soundcard type by custom parameter definition or by
autodetection following your choosing the soundcard from a predefined list
(the default) --you only enter custom setup for soundcards if there is an
error on autodetection. Good news though-- it's interactive
autodetection. So if it sounds funny when it plays back the wave sample
and the midi sample, just say you didn't here it. And of course if you
didn't hear it at all, you'd want to reflect that also in the post
playback poll, "Did you hear the sample?" -YES? -NO?
If for some reason this isn't working for you, try these awesome little
options from the command prompt to get more help:
setup --help
setup -h
man -setup **--|__or possibly:__|--** man setup
It is my experience that re-configuring my soundcard and video card after
installation proves most beneficial in CDROM and VGA DISPLAY trouble
shooting. AND it's reliably effective. I also was dealing with a
Soundblaster, i.e.- Creative Labs, Soundblaster16. I have never had to go
through more than the autodetection process. I hope you don't have to
either.
As another tech support/ self-education resource, try:
http://www.linuxhelp.net/
It's the most informative, straightforward, helpful, and specific help
available for linux on the wwweb, at least in my opinion. It's free.
It's great for newbies.
...Now, if I could only get some help with the drive detection problems I
get with the new pc I'm building... (AMD K62/500Mhz processor, VIA Apllo
MVP3 chipset, 1st Mainboard [VA 503+] AT motherboard, 128 Mgb PC100 SDRAM
@3.3v, Winpro brand memory card.)

There is nothing called coppermind. Thare is name 'Coppermine' which is
simply code0name (Intel internal, not marketing name) of new 0.18micron
PIII's. 'E' indicates 'Coppermine' core in cases when also non Coppermine
part exits which is rated at the same speed.

Ah yes, I should have mentioned that "Legacy USB Support" tip - thanks
for jumping in!
As far as the sound card goes, I just recompiled my kernel to support
Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI (1371) ... there is a similar entry for 1370,
but forget that. When I rebooted, I had sound. In other words,
plug'n'play worked!
If you don't like fiddling with kernels, just run /usr/sbin/sndconfig as
root - it auto-detected the card no problem, and will then put the
proper line into conf.modules to load the appropriate modules.

Yep - The kernel with RH 6.1 (2.2.12) comes with support for the bt878?
chipset that hauppauge use.
You will also need to d.l. xawtv and alevt (tv viewer and teletext
decoder).

If you are using RH6.1, you will need to d.l. the rp3 upgrades from the RH
site.
I tried to use kppp with RH6.1, and gave up after similar errors (kppp dialed
OK, ISP responded, but ppp hung in authentication). I then tried rp3 (redhat
ppp, get it ?!). This died with sigsegv, but a quick trawl revealed this was a
known fault, and that the rp3 upgrades at RH, fixed the problem. I also d.l.
several other upgrades as well that seemd related.
Works a treat now !
