You already got further than I did with XFCom_SiS. I had way too
much garbage on the screen for that server to be useful.
In principal the chip should support higher color resolution, but
I haven't seen it do it yet. I don't need more color, so it's no
big deal. I've got the SiS620 manual, so I could check to see
what it will actually support. It may be a nonstandard register
set, so none of the drivers talks to it correctly. A new driver
is in the works tho, so wait a few months and you may get what you
need.
Patience, persistence, truth,
Dr. mike

True it may make no difference but since he is new to this and apt to
get info from many sources using the 'traditional' setup may stave off
potential problems. (Did this save my neck?) It is the prefered setup
from many sources. Actually this is the first time I have seen it
backwards like this. Most docs and examples recommend this and
traditionally show it the other way around.

It depends on *which* Rockwell chipset.
Winmodems (aka HCF aka HSP aka 'controllerless' aka 'software UART'
modems) don't work on Linux, due to the MS Windows-specific nature
of the drivers.

Subject: Direct Install on Hardware RAID 5?
Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 18:58:32 -0400
I plan on setting up a Linux server on an Intel PC using five 9GB disks
in a RAID 5 array. I have three questions:
1) Can you install Linux directly on a HARDWARE (as opposed to software)
raid array?
2) Are there any rules about how much RAM is required for a given disk
capacity? The old Novel system I'm replacing had such rules.
3) What are good ultra 2 SCSI hardware RAID controller cards for which
Linux drivers exist?
Here is what I think I know:
[1] One of the Red Hat people (on their recent tour around the country)
told me that while you can't install Linux directly on a software RAID
system, you can install it directly on a hardware RAID system. (He
recommended the ICP-Vortex RAID controllers.)
However when I look at Red Hat's hardware support section
[http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/hardware/intel/60/rh6.0-hcl-i.ld.html]
under section "6.6 Raid Controllers" they include the statement:
Currently you cannot install Red Hat Linux's root partition onto a raid
device.
Did I misunderstand the Red Hat guy, or should the above statement be
restricted to software RAID?
[2] I suspect lots of memory isn't absolutely necessary, but I've
tentatively (read arbitrarily) planned for 256MB. The server will be a
file and print server (Samba), a mail server, an FTP site, and at some
point perhaps a small web site.
[3] While the Red Had guy thought highly of the way the ICP-Vortex RAID
controllers work I'm not familiar with them and how they stack up to the
competition. I wonder why I haven't found them listed on
www.pricewatch.com. Testimonials are welcome. If I get a warm and
fuzzy feeling about them I might buy one . . . otherwise . . .
I'm thinking of buying a DPT SmartRaid V Century Ultra 2 SCSI Raid
Controller, because DPT claims to have drivers for Red Hat Linux 5.2
that I can download [http://www.dpt.com/].

There are dock apps for several window managers (I have one for
windowmaker) that tracks this sort of thing real time. It appears to be
accurate.
If you want a real measure of the modem, try transferring a large file
of random data (a jpg or a gzip'd file) back and forth from your box to
your ISP's box. This should eliminate as many bottle necks as possible
and give you a best case scenario. Use the unix time command with ftp
from a command line, or just fire up the stop watch. Remember that baud
is Bits per second, and the file size is bytes. There are 8 bits in a
byte, so multiply the file size by 8 and divide by the number of seconds
for transfer and you should get the effective baud. Also remember that
downloads are faster then uploads for 56k modems (and ADSL, etc).

dsl isn't inherently compatible or NOTcompatible - its just a datalink that carries IP.
linux is very friendly with IP.
therefore, there should be no problems.
the question should be more: are you using an INTERNAL dsl modem or
external with 10bT connection? external has no issues. internal may
not have drivers - so try to request an external modem.

It works just fine for me. My Cisco 675 is currently running in bridging
mode, but I understand uswest.net is setting up new users with PPP mode.
PPP mode uses network address translation (NAT), and will probably require
you to do some configuration. On your local LAN side, you will use private
IP addresses, and can either use static or have the 675 serve DHCP to
your clients, but I heard the 675 will only hand out 2 addresses dynamically.
I haven't played around to see if this is true, as I would use static
addresses myself.

Fair enough. :) I'd find it more logical to have my local network considered
to be my "primary"/"first" interface (in the sense that it's always up,
etc.), but that could just be me being odd. <g>

did some searching last night.
the following motherboards claim pci/66 mhz hardware
ASUS P5S-VM
DFI PW65D
?? L440GX+
the last one was second hand info with no manufacturer.
dont know who or what makes it.
then the question is: can any of these run Linux?

Since you have the ZIP 250 drive, you should be using IMM rather than
the
older PPA. Also, instead of 'insmod imm' do a 'modprobe imm'... it
