yes, i'm using the mobo, asus p3v4x, with pIII 600e @800,
kernel 2.3.99-pre3.
I was using Intel CC820 and after a whole month of struggle
I ditched it and replaced it with this asus mobo.
I only had this for two days, so can't say much. But everything
seems to be fine, except udma 66 stuff. I did compile in
the unified ide patch, but udma 33 is the best i could get so far.
Even for this udma mode 2 I had to issue the command,
'hdparm -d1 -X66 /dev/hda' to manually set it since the kernel
didn't recoginize it properly at boot time and only gave
the inferior pio mode.
X11 is working great with matrox g400, xfree 3.3.6 (haven't tried
4.0 yet), and sound with sb live value is also great with
the driver from opensource.creative.com
All in all i think this mobo has really great price/performance
and superior stability even with overclocking.

Subject: Lots interrupt problem on IDE ATAPI CD-ROM
Date: 30 Mar 2000 10:34:55 +0100
Hi there,
I've been having problems with recent kernels (from RedHat 6.1 and 6.2)
with the CD-ROM.
After reading some files (apparently a random number and time) I get
messages from the console (1 every 5 or so seconds):
hdc: lost interrupt
Where hdc is my CD-ROM. Then my machine is almost locked up. This
happens with 2.2.12 and 2.2.14 (the RPMS from RedHat). The only way
to get it to be stable again is to reboot (yack Windows way :-).
With 2.2.5 I have no problems.
The CD-ROM (IDE/ATAPI) is placed as master on the secondary IDE
interface, the only other IDE interface attached is the HD (Maxtor 8Gb)
as master on the first IDE interface. I also tried moving the CD-ROM
around, with no success. The CD-ROM is a Goldstar x8 (GCD-560 I believe).
Any ideas what might be wrong and what does the message really mean?
Thanks in advance,
Diego

I have never come across this problem b4, maybe someone can help:
Its a problem with a fujitsu machine, its a PIII, brought from a
supermarket. No its not mine! ;)
Fujitsu have been called out several times to fix problems with it, they
have replaced the CPU and the motherboard. (After several months of
screwing around). This has not solved the problem. Every now and again
the computer refuses to boot, infact the machine does not get through
the bios boot sequence. There is power going to the drives (you can hear
them and see lights etc) but the mother board comes across as being
dead. The only way to solve the problem is to unplug the machine and
remove the internal battery, leave it for 5 min and reassemble.
I dont know what causes this to happen, I doubt it is a power spike, the
machine is plugged into a UPS box. Has anyone heard of this b4?

I have XIRCOM 32bit Cardbus Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56
that works fine in laptop Compacq Armada 1750 under
RedHat 6.1 (at least the ethernet part, didn't check
the modempart yet).

I guess, you mean hot-plugging a SCSI device?
with hot-plugging, linux _cannot_ poosibly see this device until it does
a SCSIbus scan and a device-inquiry.
But you can tell the kernel to look for a device on a certain ID on the
bus:
To add a scsi device to the machine, type:
$ echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 x 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
Where x is the ID of your device to add.
The other zero's are numbers for the SCSI-Host, -Bus, and -LUN.
Usually people have only one controller, so this is all '0'.
Check if the device has been found with 'dmesg' or 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi'
To remove a scsi device:
$ echo "scsi remove-single-device 0 0 x 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
With the same procedure as above.
You can use this technique to rearrange your /dev/sd* order, in case
you're not happy with the way the kernel sorts them.
(In fact the way the kernel does this is rather 'DOS-ish' :-P ).

Hello Hugo,
I ment that some Xircom's are not supported (yet) because Xircom does
not (will not) provide the spec's.

I had the same problem once...
But the problem is most likely something with your LILO configuration. I
think your boot partition is not set up correctly... Since i have no
experience with Slackware i would not know how to configure it there...
So try playing around with your LILO configuration...

Subject: SCSI and IDE disk problems
Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 11:43:49 +0200
About 6 months ago I installed a new Seagate Barracuda ST39175LW 9,1 Gb SCSI
disk on a small fileserver. The disk has one partition taking up the entire
disk, most of which is 'shared' to Windows clients using Samba (2.0.5a). The
system has been running happily until yesterday, when I discovered that
files and directories were missing over the samba share. Trying to list the
files in linux gave me IO errors. Unmounting the drive and running e2fsck
gave the following output:
Error reading block XXX (Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in
short read) while doing inode scan. Ignore error<y>?
Ignoring the error would give me more messages like this. Running e2fsck -c
caused the scsi bus to attempt to reset several times. Finally, after
several hours of errors, SCSI bus reset attempts etc etc, rebooted the
machine, unmounted the drive and ran e2fsck -c, which now seamed to work.
The disk is up and running again with no new error messages...

Can anyone explain this behaviour?
Now, for chapter two:
In 'panic', while I was fsck'ing the SCSI drive, I went an bought a second
10GB IDE drive, to backup my disk in case I needed to try some extensive
data recovery. I makde this dosk inot one big partition also (/dev/hdc1).
Running mke2fs, /var/log/messages is filled with this kind of errors:
Mar 30 11:27:44 arthur kernel: hdc: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady
SeekComplete Error }
Mar 30 11:27:44 arthur kernel: hdc: dma_intr: error=0x10

Mar 30 11:28:21 arthur kernel: hdc: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady

Mar 30 11:28:22 arthur kernel: hdc: dma_intr: error=0x10
{ SectorIdNotFound }, CHS=3650/0/22, sector=934354
..and runing e2fsck on this disk gives:
Error reading block 3358818 (Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted
in short read) while doing inode scan. Ignore error<y>?
...which is the same message I got on the SCSI disk in the first place!
Which means that I can't get my brand new 10 GB drive to work at all. The
drive is an IBM DTTA-371010 CHS=19590/16/63
On top of this, as I am writing this post, I see that I get the same error
messages on /dev/hda and IO errors as I am parsing through /var/log/messages
to copy the error messages. This disk is an IBM DTTA-350640 CHS=790/255/63
This is beginning to become frustrating! Any ideas, anyone?
